Have you, or have you ever known anyone that doped? (I don't know all of them, but EPO, Steroids, Blood transfusion etc...)

Would you have back in the day or currently if you were asked?

I read an article somewhere about high school kids using steroids.

In my case, when I was in high school we didn't know what it was.  However, as life went on and I got bigger and bigger (In a fat way). I would have done anything to get in shape fast.  Yes I probably would have tried something, not to get an edge on the competition, but to see results fast.  I would have thought I could handle it too and quit when the fat was gone..  Our society has made things easier and easier and I wasn't willing to put in the effort..

Are the elite athletes (Cycling Baseball Basketball Hockey, Golf, football (Both kinds) etc..)) The only dopers, or is it running rampant in the amateur ranks as well?

Now I definitely would not because of my first hand experience with substance abuse..

I wouldn't.  What would I gain?  A plastic medal at the finish line?  I think it's much more prevalant when there is a lot of money to be gained from doing so.  I'm not going to make any more money whether I finish first or last, and I'm happy so long as I've given my best effort possible.

I have a handfull of friends whom just did Steroids to "get big".  They also used HGH at times as well.  A College room mate used HGH but he had a medical condition and had to use it.

The dope I used was not performance enhancing.

In college a couple of friends and I were at this really sketchy house buying fake driver's licenses, and while waiting for them to be laminated this guy came up to us and asked us if we wanted to buy some steroids.  I thought to myself; "that is just wrong."  Forgetting the fact of where we were and why we were there.  Have never tried them, nor would I.

I'm slightly a hypocrite I guess.  In sports, I am 100% against anything illegal, drugs or otherwise.  However, when I was in the military, I did not see the point in going after guys, legal-wise, for taking steroids.  The more powerful they were the better was my thought, even though I'd never take them personally.

That is interesting, is there a place where people should be doing steroids??

There was an interesting article in Outside magazine (I think the current issue) about doping among amateur cyclists. The author actually took steroids for awhile..

I know a few people that told me they've used steroids.  One was just a guy that was just into lifting weights.  Nothing competitive, he just wanted to get stronger and increase the amount he could bench/shoulder press.  He said he ordered it off the internet.

Another guy I knew told me he was using it to enter amateur body building contests.  He had used it prior, but as the time he was trying to get to competition level again clean...but said if he couldn't get the results, he would go back on "the juice".

One of my friends did some bodybuilding and he was taking all kinds of stuff. I'm pretty sure one of them was steroids. I know for a fact he also took stuff to lower his estrogen levels and all kinds of crazy other things.

A friend of mine is has been taking steroids or something to that effect just to get bigger.  No other reason.  I've taken steroids a few times medically for recovery, but never with the intent to get bigger or fast or anything like that.

FoggyGoggles - 2011-05-25 3:48 PM Mr. Minnesota works out at the gym that I go to. He has about four other guys that lift with him. I'm pretty sure he and his friends are  "natural."

Foggy you might know this because of your body building back ground.  I worked with a guy that was a body builder, and he told me there are separate competitions for steroid use and Natural body builders.  It makes sense if using steroids isn't illegal in body building..

I worked in a gym as a personal trainer - I knew MANY using steriods and HGH, mostly men but a couple of women as well. The women were competing.

Never have.  I even stay away from the over the counter legal stuff like Creatine and Glutamine.  Not saying they're bad, i just didn't know much about them so I didn't take them.

I have read several articles that the most rampant steroid use in in the neigborhood gym. That there are scores of people using them not to get huge or compete... just to get over a platau, or just to get a bump. A friend of mine lifts with the big crowd at the gym and he can get what ever he want whenever he wants. He never wanted...

Never really heard about peds. I don't find it super hard to belive that there are many of those same ameture types in our ranks that just want to break that time, or just want to climb higher... or recover better like when they were 20. I don't use any drugs of any kind so that isn't me... but there are probably plenty of driven ametures out there that say the same thing about PEDS as folks say about weed and alcohol..... I'm an adult, who's it hurting if I decide that's what I want to do?

It is a VERY interesting read.

I have used them personally. This was over 5 years ago. I used them only to get bigger and stronger. I was not competing and didn't do any endurance sports. Prior to that I used the OTC junk. Since I have tried the real thing I am convinced the OTC stuff serves the sole purpose of lightening one's wallet. I must admit that part of my reason was curiosity. My opinion is that it can be done safely but that doesn't make it ok. If someone is competing and the sauce is banned then I am absolutely against it. Looking back I would not choose to do it again. I didn't like the mental changes it caused in me (temporarily); think hormones of 17 year old boy x 20. I look back and am ashamed of my behavior. I am older and hopefully wiser now. I choose to skip all that junk and see what I can do without it.

?Very true. There are Natural and Open shows. The Open's are typically the larger shows, larger athletes and big money. Some of the Opens do test the top two or three placers, but most of these competitors know the drugs that leave the system before their show.

Every "natural" show I was ever in was certainly won by somebody who was anything but...

I've never taken PED's. Like said before, there isn't really anything for me to "gain" from doing it, and therefore no real temptation. Were I teetering on being a pro athlete (cycling, bodybuilding, football, whatever) or something like that, I don't know what I would do if offered. I'd like to think I'd say no, but honestly, I'm not so sure what I would do.
