Got my new tri bike and took it for a tri, or is it try? anyway Never used clip ons b4 and stopped at a light, no problem clipping off. Light turned Green, 1 foot in , next foot slipped and boom fall. Grrrr people were like wow that was great. However one guy said" Don't worry about it we all do that when we have to practice, and remember your a triathlete so suck it up". that helped me get back on the bike and practice.

Why do peddles spin anyway? Its just hard to flip them over and clip in well for me at least.  and again it was my first ever clipping in.

Everyone falls at least once. And if peddles didn't spin, peddling would be rather complicated.

Not a bad first fall....it is true everyone in my small focus group of triathletes fall at least once. Just be thankful you arent injured and your bike isn't in need of a costly repair. Besides, your pride is alot less expensive to repair!

My first fall was in front of my 6-year old. Who still has memories of falling off bikes all the time. To him it was perfectly natural and OK. I have to admit I didn't feel the same way.

Worst, I landed on the brifters enough that the left one was way out of line. Had to take it to the shop and admit to everyone there that I had just fallen.

Since then I've learned that everyone does it at least once and I'm not going to worry about it any more.

They have to... think about it. If the didn't spin, and they were in the right orientation for your foot to be on top of the pedal at the top of the pedal stroke, then the pedal would be upside down at the bottom of the pedal stroke - they have to rotate on the spindle... Some pedal systems are weighted a bit so that the side you clip into faces up to help clip in more easily. There are also some double-sided systems (Shimano SPD mountain bike pedals or speedplay pedals, for example). But don't worry - everyone has been there, and you'll get the hang of it in no time!

My first fall...... I had just started riding and my running group asked if I would be the cyclist to lead the group out and lead the first runner on a 10 miler.  Needless to say I was thrilled.  I got up early and rode to the event.  As I was coming up the hill to the stop light where registration was happening, the light turned red, I forgot to clip out and tipped over, not that that wasn't embarrassing enough, I fell into traffic as the light turned green, no cars could go as I was blocking traffic.  I was struggling to get unclipped and get up when one of my running friends got out of his car and picked me up, bloody knees and all.  I was soooo embarrased.  I was dinged up and so was my bike, and they had to call my husband to come and get me.

If I'm stopping at a stop sign or red light, I only unclip one foot to put on the ground. I only unclip both feet when I'm getting off the bike completely.

The OP indicated that both feet were out of the clips at a stop light, at least that's how I read it.  I keep one foot in and just touch my left big toe on the ground a stop.

If the OP is taking both feet out at a stop, it might be helpful to leave one in.

So long as they remember not to lean to the side that is still clipped in.

Just a quick note from someone who is also new to clipless pedals...

You can pedal with one foot!  You are able to use your clipped in foot to pull up and keep moving.  If you miss clipping in on your first try, give a pull up, and push down with your clipped in foot, then try again... that way you won't "stall" and fall over.

Good luck!  You'll have it mastered in no time at all!!!

Yup 2 things will save you. First, you can pedal with one foot so only unclip one foot at a stop. Get in a habit of going to one side or the other. For example i always unclip my left foot to stop. Next you do not need to be clipped in to pedal so don't stress at the intersection about pressing down and hearing the snap from clipping in just get going then when you are through the intersection you can clip in to that pedal on the downstroke with less stress. Hope that helps.

I really, really hate it when people say that, 5 years now and touch wood no fall as yet (have come close though).  I keep thinking when it happens it's going to be a big one

I always feel kind of left out when I see things like this.  I was $hitting myself when I first got clipless pedals.  It took me a couple of days to get up the courage to actually put them on the bike and go out for a spin.  Sadly (?) everything went ok and have ever since.  Never had a single issue.

One thing for the OP, depending on the type of system you use there is adjustment in how easy/hard it is to clip out.  For a while at least it's better to back it off as much as you can so that clipping out takes very little force.  I still have mine this way but I have heard some people complain that their shoes can slip out of the pedals when spinning fast.  Never had that problem myself.

Congratulations! And may there be many more to come ... it's part of the fun of telling 'war stories' and what makes you a 'real' triathlete. Glad you're okay!

Well, I sure have my share of war stories, although just two very minor bike spills neither related to clipping in/out issues. And now that I've completely damned myself by saying so, I am sure it will happen soon

Just a note to the OP.  If you are using Look Pedals they are only one sided I believe. IF they are the pedals I am thinking of.

Think about a set of speedplay or other brand pedals.  My speedplays you just step on them and go right in because they are double sided. It doesnt matter which side is facing up.

The only thing with speedplays is there is a lot more ability for you feet to move or rotate on the pedal. THis is why most people like myself like the speedplays BUT it also takes slightly longer to get out of them.  You have to turn your heel a little further.  I am more than used to it by now as I've had them for 10 years but some take a bit.

Just a thought.

x2 on the Speedplays. Love em.

I actually find them WAY easier to unclip from than other pedals......

My first fall was at the intersection of a 4 lane hwy I was crossing (I was on a two lane crossing the 4 lane at a light)...I rolled up to the line and unclipped...was just standing there and the light for the 4 lane turned red...my left foot while on the ground spun on the cleat and down I went with a total of 6 lanes of cars pointing and laughing...I was so stuck the car behind me had to get out of his car to help get the bike off of me and my other foot unclipped...needless to say I didn't make the light...first day on the clipless pedals and 2 blocks from the house after a 20 mile ride...as the saying goes "suck it up and rub some dirt in it"

I fell last year at a stop light after coming back from a furious training run with my buddy. We were talking and I just forgot and tipped over. LSF=Low Speed Fall. Once he stopped laughing he told me he did the same thing earlier this year after many years of riding. He was biking early in the morning and saw some deer drinking at the lake and it was so beautiful he stopped to watch. Except guess what he forgot!

Just remember, fall UNDER the bike. Protect your investment

been there done that! Had right foot on the curb, and I guess I wasn't quite as leaned to the right as I thought! Suddenly I'm falling to the left, and then on the ground. Unclipped, jumped up quickly, and then had to just laugh at myself, because there was nothing else to do at that point :-)

When coming to intersections or any type of anticipated stop, always remember to shift down a couple of times into an easy gear.  It is MUCH easier to get yourself moving forward when you are pushing an easy gear.  I have to remind myself constantly to do this, as it is easy to forget.  Trying to fumble around clipping into pedals at a light that has just changed green (with a line of cars behind you scrambling to get around you) is nerve-racking enough...add to that the realization that you forgot to downshift into an easier gear, and bad things are bound to happen.
