Bay State Triathlon Team
78F / 26C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 32m 16s
Overall Rank = 169/494
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 26/61
Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 5am. Quick shower to help me wake up. Bagel w/peanut butter, H2O and coffee. At race site by 6am. Registered and setup transition area.
Event warmup:

Light jog and stretch.
Swim
  • 26m 53s
  • 1408 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Thankfully, water temps had dropped to wetsuit-legal levels. It's in a small lake, which pretty much requires you swim the perimeter all the way around. Makes for an unusual buoy configuration. I had real trouble sighting on the way back. Sun was right in my eyes, and there was tons of glare off the water. I couldn't see the buoys through the glare. Had to rely on swimmers around me to estimate where to go. Ended-up on the inside of one buoy, requiring me to cut back around it. At the end I didn't even see the finish and swam right by it. If it wasn't for all the cheering I would have kept going...
What would you do differently?:

Need goggles with better glare protection. I'd estimate I wasted ~2 min swimming off course (and past the finish). I'm pleased with my endurance. I could have easily kept swimming, and actually wish I pushed harder.
Transition 1
  • 04m 32s
Comments:

Disappointingly long T1. The transition area is large, but I still think I should have been out of there in under 3 minutes. I need to cut time. It's free time that I shouldn't waste with inefficiency.
Bike
  • 1h 09m 9s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 21.61 mile/hr
Comments:

My fastest ride of this length to date. Very pleased. Only bikes that passed me were tri bikes. No road bikes (which I currently ride) succeeded in permanently passing me. This was a fast course, which undoubtedly assisted in my good time.
What would you do differently?:

Get a tribike! The bike segment is my strongest in triathlons. I can't wait to get a tribike during the up-coming off season and see what a can do next year with some proper gear. Need to get aero.
Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

T2 is never really an issue. Don't see too much room to improve.
Run
  • 49m 47s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Took me ~ 2miles to get my running legs. After that I felt pretty good. I walked at most drink stops to make sure the water/gatorade went into my mouth, rather than all over my face. The hill at mile 5 was a killer. Probably not steep or long in absolute terms, but at the end of the race, it's a challenge.
What would you do differently?:

I was aiming for sub-8-minute miles, so I didn't quite get my goal. Overall pretty happy. I need to run more...
Post race
Warm down:

Legs cramped at finish line. Met KathyG there, who was kind enough to give me water. Walked around and consumed lots of liquids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first olympic distance race, and my 4th triathlon to date. My overall goal was to get 2:30. I was only 2 minutes over that, so I'm very pleased. Better sighting on the swim was probably all I needed to get to my time goal. I was also hoping to finish in the upper 1/3 of racers. I'm only a few spots shy of that, and I was well into the top half of my age group. So, again, I'm very happy.

I need to train smarter next season (encorporate periodization). I'm sure I will get faster over time.

Event comments:

This is a fantastic race. Very organized. Plenty of volunteers. Lots of drinks during the race and after. Ice water sponges felt great at the finish. I will definitely do this again next year.

TO KATHYG: My wife told me tonight that you asked to get a picture of me at the finish line. I was so dazed I didn't even realize it. I heard someone ask me to pose for a picture, and I assumed it was my wife. I'm sorry if I came off as rude--truly unintentional!! Thanks for the water!

Great race Paul...you really smoked that bike course, and then to follow it up with 8 minute miles! I wish I could run like that after pounding on the bike!!!

Definitely what max said! Congrats on your strong finish. I have no doubt that you will meet your overall goals next season.

GET AERO, WILL YA? Lay down in some bars and hammer like you should!

And you can apologize to Kathy for not taking a pic and for being "rude", but it's ok to be rude to your wife???

Thx for comments guys!

May: I actually did pose for a pic for my wife, who also happened to have the camera out. I was so out of it at the finish line, and having some serious hamstring cramps. Still not sure what was going on...

I wish I could have hung out with the BT crowd after the race, but my 18 mo daughter had reached her limits. Anybody racing Westchester? If not, hope to see you all around the races next season!

Great race Paul! Smoking bike. If nothing else grab a set of aerobars, slap them on your road bike and really put it to the rest of us. Even with my shaded, mirrored goggles I still thought the sun was somewhat tough. Can't imagine how tough it was without shaded goggles.

I can relate to needing to leave early for kids. Look forward to meeting you at a future race.

Paul, Nice Tri! It's hard to believe this is your first Oly. You killed every event. 21+mph bike speed is awesome. You came about as close as possible to sub 8 on the run. I can't imagine how dangerous you'll be on a tri bike. Hope to see you again soon.

Nice race report and great finishing times -- though it's good to have goals, it's sometimes BEST to come in "just over" the goals because it'll push you to train that much harder (and smarter!) next season. I missed cranberry due to a weekend trip, but I wish I'd raced it. Sounds like a great course, a "must race" for 2006! Congrats on your performance.

Cheers, -Sunny

Last but not least in my CC Race logs. Sorry it took so long to get here. Looks like you had a great race. Unreal bike numbers. Wish I could go like that. Hope to see you next year. Maybe my kids will come next year.
