obrats - 2011-06-17 7:36 AM I got in also, I am both excited and scared.  Will be my first IM distance race.  I know we are 60 weeks away but anyone up there know the elevation of the bike course?

I'm not sure if this link will work or if is correct, however my brief review is that it works and is correct.

Map my Tri, at the bottom of the page you can click on the elevation

http://www.mapmytri.com/routes/fullscreen/37546004/

That link was great thanks for posting.

X2.  Thanks for posting.

Does anyone know how to convert the route to a gpx file?

Current in the Hudson is fast!  I did a comparison of Matty Reeds swim time from the Nautica NY Triathlon (.9) and the Rev 3 Knoxville (.9).  Both river swims and the the Hudson swim time was 2/3's of the Knoxville swim time.  !8 minutes + for Knoxville compared to 12 minutes + for Nautica....use that as a gauge of the current effect on the time.

I drive the bike course nearly everyday...its a parkway which means that you cant actually get on it with a bike.    My estimates right now is that the total elevation gain will be around 6,000+ feet.  I'll have gps files soon.

Looking forward to seeing the elevation profile, if possible!

Sadly, there's not too much here in Southeast Michigan in the way of hill training

Central Florida is a little lacking in the hills as well, although I hear Clermont (about an hours drive) has some good training areas.

Does anyone know how they are going to handle transportation from the transition area to the finish area and back again.  There will need to be some way for the spectators to get from transition to the finish for viewing and the athletes will need to get back to transition after the finish.

I know they are going have a ferry to get us to the swim start.

Just curious how they are going to handle all of that.

Thanks for the info on the elevation gains for the bike     I avoided Lake Placid because of the hills but it looks like we are in for the same if not worse on the bike here.  At least the run should be flatter aside from the climb up to the bridge.  Looks like I have a lot of hill training in the near future.

Didn't know this thread was alive just yet.  I'm in too.  It'll be my 6th IM (as long as everything goes as planned in Texas a few months before hand)

Looking forward to talking with all of you over the next year +

The current is going to be an interesting twist.  I did the NYC Nautica race a few years back and the early waves were just flying down river, along with all the damn jellyfish, and other debris.  However, when my wave got in the water there was very little current and I ended up right around my normal swim time.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a nice little push down the river.

Maybe a bit far out to be thinking of it.... but I was wondering if anyone has plans for a HIM tune-up race before IM NYC? I'm considering Eagleman or Quassy as possible tune-up races (Perhaps Tinman or Patriot Half in Mass, but those are getting a little on the late side...). I know Eagleman registration opens later this month and will fill relatively quickly... Eagleman is flat, it sounds like Quassy has some pretty challenging hills. The IM course will probably lie somewhere in between. Anyone else looking at possible tune-up races?

A couple of good early year HIMs for the Mid-Atalantic folks are White Lake and Kinetic. Both put on by Setup Events. White Lake is flat and fast, Kinetic is a little more hilly.

I drove the course the other day with my Garmin to record it... Haven't had a chance to download and stare at it yet, but I think the bike course has about average climbing/descending for a US course, but all of it other than the initial climb up from the river to the PIP (which will be tough) is pretty gradual and should manageable. Virtually no flat portions, it's either up or down the whole way - I think the total climbing/descending will be 5000-5500 ft. The climb up to exit 4 on the second loop, at about mile 105, will likely be the worst of it other than the initial climb. The worst part of the day will probably be the early portions of the run, with the hills and climb up to the bridge, at the hottest time of day. It will also be pretty crowded on the bike, with 2500 cyclists packed into the same 27 mile stretch of 2-lane road, with no shoulder at all for about the northern 10 miles of it.

I'll get in touch with you as soon as we get settled.

Hopefully my next ride in that area will end with better results than my last ride there when I was hit by a car.  Not even a nice BMW either, just some dude who was living out of his car.  He decided that he wanted to move and on his way decided to put me down.  I hope the rest of his move went smoothly

Damn sucks ... There has actually been a few people hit on Shore Drive already this year. There is currently a pretty heated debate between drivers/cyclists/city on paving a bike lane into Shore Drive. We'll see what happens. You won't believe this, but some resident actually went out on the popular Pungo weekend bike route one Saturday morning and put thumb tacks at all the corners/intersections. Tons of people flatted/wrecked etc. Crazy. Doesn't deter me though, still out there all the time!

The ratio of male to female participants is interesting.... roughly 4.5:1 male to female. Is that typical for iron distance races?

at IMCDA this year they said it was 71/29 which was the highest female contingent ever. Usually 80/20

Also drove the Palisades southbound lane where the bike course runs. Looks like 3 to 5% grades of either up or down for 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile stretches. A couple of more than 5% and a couple of less than 3%. Wide open with no shade on the bike. Roads are pretty smooth. It looks like 9w runs adjacent for a big portion of bike course ( I have also rode 9 w many times in the past since IM from Ny originally) but not all and is active with bikers. My coach is planning a camp next year . Maybe a sat and sunday. We cant ride the palisades but perhaps run the run course and Bike some of 9w which has similar profile of long ups and downs.
I also do an IMLP camp every year on last weekend of June with my coach for 4 days and its the best camp ever. (Ultimate triathlon training camp its called)
Over 40 of us did it this year. I am also doing Quassy Half iron beg of june to prepare for IM NYC. I have done it before and it is the toughest half iron in the country like its reputation has it. I live in CT just 40 minutes from where the race is in Lake Quassy. Lots of climbing on bike and brutal run. The NYC iron has a 4 mile out and back on henry hudson drive. Thas 16 miles of the course since you do it twice so that part of the course can be previewed easily. The last 10 miles is the over the bridge and down the west side of manhattan which is also beautiful and tree lines like henry hudson drive. Henry hudson drive I have not bee on but has some steep climbs from wha I have read. I will definitely preview before next year. The IMLP camp is great practuce. I have doen IMLP twice and its a lot of climbing and a couplel steep hills on the run.

I too am starting to formulate a plan. Sounds like you're having similar thoughts as me with getting a Half in. Mooseman is same date as Quassy. Tupper Lake is an option. Also Rhode Island 70.3 although that's getting rather late in the training (jul 15). But there is a new one - HTS is putting on HIMs and Full IM's, including one in Hunter Mt on Jun 10...that's definitely got my eye.

Other than that, I'm pretty sure I'll be up in Placid once or twice for some training - probably when IMLP happens so I can train/spectate, and maybe also a a camp that a local coach hosts. After hiking around Whiteface this year, I'm really itching to ride up it.
