Mark - thanks for the suggestion. My friend who practices homeopathy also suggested that along with the little tabs to ingest.

csharp - definitely don't want to get an infection. Were you on an antibiotic treatment? They gave me an IV dose in the hospital and also taking oral antibiotics for the next 10 days. Pics would be interesting to see!

Vineman is one of my A races, and I still have Big Kahuna (HIM) in September. Crossing my fingers for good input from my ortho next week.

Here's to a speedy recovery. I really hope this does not affect your plans. Really happy it was not worse. (Not saying it isn't bad... you know what I mean.)

Tega Derm can help with healing and scar prevention.

You can get it at most pharmacys but if not at a medical supply store or even Amazon.

I was admitted on day 3 and put on 7 days of IV antibiotics.  Here's a few pictures.  Day11b.jpg is the wound vac that I walked around with for 3 weeks.

I can't get them to post in the right order.  Day_1.jpg was right after the accident.

Hope that you heal up fast and that they catch that guy. that is terrible! I am surprised they did not do more imaging when you were at the hospital though, especially if you were doing thirty when you crashed. there is also the potential for a lot of soft tissue injury there that wont be as evident until after swelling goes down.

pictures are gruesome - imagine the stories though

csharp1171  - whoa, that must have been an ordeal. I'll definitely keep that in mind. Did the wound eventually close and heal?

bel83 - I wish they did more imaging. Unfortunately, there were two more "severe" trauma cases that came in. Plus, i'd rather get my personal sports ortho to do the imaging as he know my history better.

Just wanted to give an update. I met with my ortho and a wound specialist. It doesn't look like I'll be doing Vineman. I've seen the ortho twice already and he's being careful with my wound. It was pretty deep and is scheduling a MRI. My brace is off and I can being to bend my leg, however, he said I should be careful. Stitches are still in and won't come out until I see the wound specialist again next Monday. My othro doesn't want me swimming until I see him in 4 wks

Sigh...another long process of healing and rehab. It's very disappointing as I've progressed so much since starting. I started triathlons the year after I ruptured my quad. I started with an olympic back in June 2010 (Silicon Valley International), my times weren't bad considering I'd been training for only 3 months: swim 37 min, bike 1:15, run 52 min, total 2:49. Last month I did SVIT again, which gave a decent bench mark. Swim 32, bike 1:05, run 48, total 2:30. Since my first tri, I've also competed 2 HIM and was training for the full. During training, I am able to do a <25 min mile OWS, average 25+mph on flats cycling, and dropped my 10k under 40. I'd been working on putting the three sports together for better and increasing my endurance. Now, it's back to the drawing board

Somethings I've learned from this experience:

  • Make sure wear a helmet!!
  • Have good medical, automobile and home owners/renters insurance
  • If it's a hit and run or motor related accident, your Uninsured Motorist will help cover your pain and suffering cost, as well as other related expenses
  • Medical Pay through your auto policy can cover out of pocket medical expense
  • Renters insurance is covering my bike and personal items damages, in addition to my lost bike computer and Garmin
  • File a police report
  • Keep all your medical records and receipts
  • Catalog and maintain records of all your property (makes insurance claim go smoother
  • Use Non-stick dressing under the gauze for any open wounds!!! Helps changing the dressing without the gauze sticking to your wounds.

For the most part, I guess I'm lucky to just have these injuries, it could have been worse. I have great insurance and medical coverage that's taking care of the logistical and practical things. However, it's hard not to feel discouraged, disappointed and depressed. Going from working out everyday to zero is awful. I hate it. It sucks. The last 6 mos, I've put in over 260 hrs of working out and all the effort gone in less than 1 min. So disappointing.

Anyhow, I appreciated everyone's input and concern. Onwards to recovery...

Again, I'm sorry this happened to you, and doubly now as things have not progressed as you hoped (and as I hoped for you). It is a big deal to go through a horrific accident, AND to have to forfeit an iron race that you are prepared for.

Your attitude is commendable. Try to keep your chin up. There are truly better days ahead and also, while losing Vineman is a bitter pill, you have not lost all of that training. That base stays with you for your next race. All the best with further healing.

Dang brother. I am not going to say it could of been worse. It is bad. You were minding your own business and some jack leg screwed up, hit you. That person is such a coward for screwing up and not owning up to his mistakes. I hope you heel well and fast. Recover slow. It will come back.

I know what its like to get hit by a truck, I knew the guy that hit me and never came back to check on me. He is a neighbor. He never cared enough to help me out. He rather call his wife than 911. Thank the lord for goo citizens that are willing to help.

Ride safe!

Wow!!!  Just saw this thread.

I have had a couple of close ones with trailers.  It's always the ones designed to carry mowing equipment; wide low down trailers.  I swear there is a vacuum behind the truck that tends to suck me back into the lane as the truck goes by.

Take care.  Get back to racing as soon as you are healthy enough to.

On the subject of scars.  Are you seeing a Dr that is paying attention to the mobility issues related to deep/big scars on your knee like that?  I have some big scars.  The Dr. had me wearing tegaderm  for about three months.

There is a vacuum that is formed being big trucks and that can literally suck you in. In my case, the negligent driver didn't know how long his trailer was.

My doc and wound specialist want me to keep my wound covered and moist. I'm scheduled to see the wound specialist a few more times over the next 3 weeks. I'll have to get some tegaderm after.I have quite a bit of experience with large scars from surgeries and the long process of healing.  I just wish I didn't have to go through it again.

Whoa!  Sorry to hear about the injury and the decision to miss the race.

Any status on the driver?  Do we need to form a posse and find him?
