Total Time = 1h 48m 24s
Overall Rank = 29/383
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 1/14
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4. Drank shake, ate banana. Packed van and got all 4 kiddos loaded up.

On the road by 5:10ish.
Event warmup:

Spun on the bike to check things out. Quick little jog. Didn't really need a warmup cause it was so stinking hot and humid already:-)
Swim
  • 15m 45s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

I decided that I was not going to wear a wetsuit because it was hot and I was just racing in my shorts so I figured I'd be good without. The swim felt like I was holding good form and everything but I was waayyy slower than expected. Think some time was lost to not having the byouancy of the suit and some to the course possibly being a bit long.

The whole of wave 8 was really slow when looking at the results.
What would you do differently?:

Wear a wetsuit if permitted. The water was cool enough that it would have been an advantage. But, still did adequate without.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Long transition runs. Since the total transition ground to cover was to large I really ran hard and it somewhat showed in my T times.
What would you do differently?:

Register elite next year (pending improvement on bike) and be near the mount/dismount/run out line:-)

Comments:

This was a pretty good ride for me. My PT was jacked up so I rode off of feel and came right out at about what I would have expected. Ended up finishing into headwinds which is less preferred on such a hot day when the run is already going to kick your butt...
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Great T2. Nearly had an epic fail crash when someone just ahead of me smashed on her brakes and veered left into my direct lane far before the dismount line. Was a very nerve-racking moment given I generally am still around 12mph when I jump off into the transition run.
Run
  • 35m 1s
  • 5.3 miles
  • 06m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot run. Knew it was going to be hot and was going to hurt. And, it did... Very difficult run to get through. I kept thinking that this was nothing compared to how hot the run will feel next weekend (the Chisago Half course) and that I needed to suck it up and push. Dropped a lot of time over my goal, but finishing with the time I did I'm not complaining. Still had fun too. I love running in the heat because everyone is dealing with the same stuff. Maybe not great for PR's, but great for mental toughness.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk to the lake. Get in. Enjoy body temp plummeting back to normal levels:-)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat. Humidity.

Event comments:

Great race. It was my first time here and the whole town is about this race it seems. Great atmosphere.

Wonderful event to bring the entire family to. We had a wonderful time!

Will certainly be doing this event again.

Congrats.  I just don't know how you ran that pace in the miserable heat.  You did awesome!  Love your upbeat comments.

Great job and good to see you out there. I went without a wet suit also and noticed two things. First was that even though you feel faster without a wetsuit and body feels food, you are losing ground to those wearing them. Second was the swim course was long for sure. Top swimmers should have been at 1:10 or so per 100 and they were at 1:25 or so. look forward to seeing you at Chisago.
