You dont need to spend the big bucks to replace the entire crankset.  I just replaced my inside chainring, which can be done w/ most cranks.  I bought a new bike and was unsure I wanted the crankset on it, but decided to just change the inside (small) chainring.

Works great!  I'd suggest a 34 tooth...  Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice on places to stay.  I ended up getting a room at the Northwoods Inn, did anyone stay there?  I am guessing it will be good since it is the host hotel.  I called numerous places but they were all booked already......  that is crazy.

I am in the same boat as you.  I am spending my "off-season" doing the following: reading books on building cycle speed/strength to understand what is going on, strength training and starting earlier in the winter on a cycle program so by the time spring roles around I am ahead of last year.   I am going on the theory I will improve with more training.

But like you said, my average heart rate when cyclying is pretty low, if I do try to get my heart rate up by cycling harder, I won't last long.  I averaged 17.38 mph at LP, and even going up the hills my heart never went past 140.

For what it's worth, my resting pulse is 52.

Anyways, my point is you're not alone...

I should probably ask this in the training thread...but since people are still posting here I thought Id try to help push it toward 200 pages Laughing

Im really weak on the bike and was wondering if any of you had advice. When Im riding I have a really hard time keeping my heart rate above 105-110 bpm. I think my avg was 104 in Placid, and thats about what it was on my long rides. If I go hard enough to raise my heart rate my legs are toast. Is this just a lack of leg Strength? Its gotta be right?

I always thought the idea was to be fit enought to keep your heart rate down and not to crank it up. I know I ride around 145-155 bpm and when I climb I have to slow down to keep my hr below 170bms.  Are you confusing hr with cadence? Cadence you want high but never your heart rate.

No, I understand that a low heart rate is good...but I cant get out of my own way at 105 bpm. (I think I averaged 15.25 mph.) But when I try to go faster, and heart rate gets up in the 120 range...my legs cant handle it.  I run in the 130-140 bpm range, so its not like I have some crazy low heart rate. Seems like it has to be lack of leg strength, but im not sure. Guess Ill try a strength program and ride more hills and see what happens!

First day back to work.  It feels different not having to think about the upcoming race.  Took this past week off (Was still up in Saranac),  Now I'll have to figure out what kind of training program I should jump on now.  Anybody know of any good marathon training programs?

blackchr05 - 2012-07-27 1:45 PM I`m bored.

This x1000. Its jarring to have so much free time all of the sudden. I come home from work, eat dinner and go "..now what?"

I'm sticking by my plan of 1 full week totally off (might do a yoga session over the weekend) then 1 week of light workouts (basically a regular rest week). After that I will try to add some speed for my Lake George HIM over Labor Day Weekend before ending the tri season at HITS (either sprint or Oly, haven't decided) 3 weeks later. I'm dying to showcase what I believe is the best run fitness of my life (hard to do that at Lake Placid obviously lol), so I'll be looking for some HMs, possibly a full marathon before shutting it down totally. Then its time to start training for IMLP 2013!

Good plan.  At least a week off.  Do you eat, and then eat again?  I see to do nothing but eat.  Played golf on Saturday (3 hot dogs at the 9th as it was raining) - i kept checking me HR.

My buddy offered me his bib for the NY mara in Nov - yeehaa.  Run planned for after work.

SWIM!!!!   Like it..   not swiming till 17days before next year race and going to see if i can go quicker again.

That's all I did this past week I ate even when I didn't want to eat.  Today is the first day back to normal eating.  Now I just need a new plan for whatever is next.  I think I got all the eating out of my system for now.

I'm shocked no one started the 2013 thread yet!

We took a straw poll on this forum and it was agreed that you deserve the right to start the official 2013 race thread. Let the fun begin!

Lots of ifs here -

Did you have have permission from the photographer?

When you say borrow - do you mean borrow or "borrow" - generally in rights management if you have to ask...

If this person makes their living from the photos and you "borrowed" then yes they could raise a stink.  Will they, who knows; but the flip side is these folks are providing a service and are not volunteers.  If you do purchase "copies" you will want to look at the agreement that comes along with it.  All this presumes the photogs are going to raise a stink and balance that with your level of fairness in the market.

I deal with rights management a fair bit with artists so the above is an opinion.  There are a lot of variables.

I had the cardiac catherter this morning and they found no issues with my heart other than a little plaque in one arter, totally normal and some a little high blood pressure in my right atrium. My heart appears fine. I will get an electrocardiogram about the right atrium pressure but they do not think I have any heart related issues.

My incedent on race day may have just been Swimmer induced pulmonay edema.  I will find out more in 3 weeks when I meet up with the cardiologist again.

So far so good. It appears I will be fine fo IMLP 2013

Stayed at High Peaks Resort.

It was good. Good food in the hotel restaurant (Dancing Bears), good staff and the hotel is very close to the action.

I would stay there if I'll come back one day

x2

Have stayed here twice, a bit on the pricey side but worth it. Only 5 day minimum and there's plenty for the fambly to do; 4 pools and canoe/kayak rental right across the street. Grocery, etc. just up the street the other direction away from the busier area of town.

TeamAndyBU - 2012-07-17 2:11 PM anyone check the weather lately :/

It's still looking okay for Sunday, right?? Now, slight chance of rain, slightly cooler (79-81), and possibly of rain at night. I'll take it if it stays that way!! No way to know what we'll really get.

I, personally, do not care if it s 90 or 60.  I do not care if it is windy or calm, rainy or not.

These are things that are outside of my control. Whatever the weather, I will adjust and modify my pace.

Do not let the WEATHER distract you from the task at hand. Focus on proper pacing/nutrition/hydration. These are the things in your control.

Execute your best race no matter the conditions. Account for it, adjust and execute.

Taper time just gives too much time to think...

this was the best advice I got and I'm so glad I took it to heart...

execution on race day is about doing your best in controlling the things you can control

I will remember this advice if (when) I ever attempt the long course again

--------

Doug-Glad to hear the cath went well and you are back on the road to IMLP 2013!

congratulations to you!!

How much space do you get,  the wife took over 600 pictures.  Mainly of a bunch of men in tight spandex on the bike, which she said she was "Practicing" for when I came.  There has to be somebody she caught in there.
