The "bumpy" section is on golden state hwy (2 loops HIM course )
Its literally like crossing train tracks on a 6% downhill and dropping some 1000 ft of elevation .
You have to navigate through the numerous cracks with eyes peeled on the pavement and hands on the brakes to maintain control . All the descents have a no aerobar rule.
Returning up that section is bumpy too but OK as your speed is a lot lower.

Ahh, thanks.  Do you know how long that "bumpy" section is?  And are you signed up for this race too?  I just faxed in my entry form. =)

I always want to sign up but have stayed away because of all the talk about road conditions.  I haven't had a chance to go out and pre-ride it for myself.

Are you doing the Oly or the HIM?

The worst section is only on the HIM course...however you do it twice!  I won't do the race because of it...too dangerous, frankly, based on doing one of the organized training rides on the course last year.  (And this is from someone who just took a descent on a moderately bumpy stretch of pavement at Timberman in my aerobars at 45 mph...not afraid of bumps...am afraid of dying.  Well, that and the fact that the drivetrain on my roadie still hasn't recovered from riding that section...)

On the Oly (which my wife did last year), the only bad section is much shorter and not nearly as bad as the horrible pavement on the HIM descent.  It's the section leading up to the turnaround on the first of the two out-and-backs on the Oly course and is in a relatively flat section (though still descending a bit at that point, IIRC).

Whew!  I'm signed up for the Oly.  I wanted to finish my first racing season with one and this one fits my schedule.  Going to be a challenge indeed! O_O

Is your wife doing it again this year?

How did your drivetrain get messed up? I'm concerned about messing mine up when I go. >.<

I'm going to do the group ride on the 24th. I actually rode almost the whole bike course (turned around about 1 mile early on templin) last weekend and the hills are pretty brutal. I did the this HIM in 2009 and it was definitely easier since we weren't required to go down to the right on templin.

Cool!  I'll be there.  How brutal would you say?  5% grades for all ascents?  What kind of bike are you gonna use?  I'm gonna be the guy with a Felt roadie. =)

I would say 5% for about 1/3 and 3.0-4% for the remaining 2/3 of the climb. I have a road bike I've been training with but I'm going to fit aerobars on there. Are you doing the HIM or the olympic?

Had a great turnout at today's morning workout!  The bumpy section wasn't too bad and as mentioned above, it's quite short (1/4th mile during a descent?).  I stayed loose over that part and turned around into that crazy ascent. =)

I conquered the M3 bike course again today but..... this time in the heat(80-90F)!  Started at 10am and finished at 12pm.  I got totally fried!  26 miles burning in the hot sun!!!  The high temps really takes a toll on the body while already working on such a grueling task.  Took it as easy as possible and made it through the course but boy was I tired!  I used up my entire electrolyte drink supply which was barely enough.  I'm going to bring 2 for race day! =)

Yep!  Highs in the 80s is way better than the 90s like it was last Saturday.  I got fried during heat training from 11am-12pm after the turnaround at the power plant! O_O

OK, I've been following your posts for a while here. I drove the Oly bike course today (as far as I could go just a mile short of the Power Plant) and was a little freaked out at the 2nd ascent. I saw the description but being on the course was a whole other animal.

Your two hour time is very impressive. I take it you did this Tri last year or the year before? I have done 3 Sprint tri's in the past 2 years so this would be my first Olympic distance. From past experiences, do most of the riders just plow up the first two ascents? Do you see people just taking it easy or even stopping at some point? After seeing the course first hand I just want to finish somewhat respectably but even if I am last in my AG I could care less.

I saw some entrants took 5, 6 or even 7 hours last year. I figure I can do that. Any other advice? All my previous Tri's have been Ocean swims (Malibu, LA Tri at Venice).

Good luck on Sunday!
