Sunny
Total Time = 1h 31m 5s
Overall Rank = 41/117
Age Group = 50-55
Age Group Rank = 6/7
Pre-race routine:

I had GI issues for a day and a half leading up to the race. It was very likely some homemade chili I ate. I was in the can a lot the day before the race.

Up at 5 AM. Ate breakfast and headed to the race site. Drink a diet Pepsi on the way. Trip took about 30 minutes. Had to drop of the bike and check in and then drive 2 miles to the parking area. Rides were provided back to tranisition. Now it got interesting.

Had trouble pumping my tires. Went to the mechanic and he had no luck. He ended up taking my rear valve extender off and could not get one back on. Then the valve for the front tire got stuck. So race wheels were no good for the race. Went back to the truck and got my training wheels. One of the valves here was stuck and had to be replaced, but finally they were good to go.

Next it turns out I left my timing chip in my truck. So the guys that run the series told me they would manually time me. Got into my wetsuit and got ready to go.
Event warmup:

Swam 100 yards.
Swim
  • 09m 55s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Breathing got a little labored and I had to agjust my stroke and turnover.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Transition 1
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Feet were so cold I had real trouble getting my feet in. Starting on an uphill made it worse.
Bike
  • 49m 9s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Breathing was labored during the first 2 miles until things got out on the open road. It was cold and I only felt like I was in a rhythm for short stretches. The road surface varied wildly from one section to the next.
What would you do differently?:

Have a better lead up and feel better going into the race. Get my equipment in better shape.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Only issue was getting the shoes on quickly as my feet were STILL cold. Still was the 3rd fastest in my AG.
Run
  • 29m 38s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough hilly run made worse by a calf cramp. Worked it out and kept slogging through it.
Post race
Warm down:

Ran 2 miles to transition to retrieve my missing chip

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness and GI issues preceeding the race.

Event comments:

Liked the race, but the location is a little odd.

So you made chili and then were in the can or did you make chili from the can or were you making chili in the can?  I'm so confused....

Nice race with adversities...  but what was up with the mechanicals - that's unlike you, not double / triple checking your equipment....

Way to work through some tough obstacles Doug.  I don't think I would have started if I had the runs the previous day.

dcon - 2011-10-02 1:25 AM Way to work through some tough obstacles Doug.  I don't think I would have started if I had the runs the previous day.

Dcon, and Doug help me understand something...I thought the standard protocol was to take it easy the couple of days leading up to a race.  I understand that to mean NO RUNNING!

Sounds like a tramatic morning Doug.  Nice work prushing through it.Tongue out

Congrats, and thanks for the great race report. I will remind myself not to have the chili on the taper week!

Okay, I've been reading this in your race reports for years so I have to ask.  What's up with drinking Pepsi's on the way to races?   I can't imagine Marty Gaal recommends that as a proper pre-race nutrition source.  Wink   Good job sucking it up through that cold.  Crazy weather.  I would have turned into a popsicle.

There doesn't seem to be any race morning stress that can phase you. It is an odd race site, but I like it.

I drink atleast 6ozs of Coke before every race. My stomach is used to it and I think it helps settle my stomach.

Diet Pepsi is my only source of cafiene. I have NEVER even had a sip of coffee. Since races usually require me the wake up at some ridiculous hour I drink diet Pepsi to get going.

As far as running leading up to a race, this was NOT an "A" race. I was just using the race as training and to have fun. I do run the week before an "A" race but it is not hard running.
