When I passed her going up mt. lemmon last year... she was riding a Pina.  I know she took 3rd this year, and watched part of the race- but didn't notice her logos.

 

(ok... I did pass her;  She was doing intervals and flew by me.  I caught her during one of her rests between intervals... then she flew by me again)

I think it'd also be useful to ask, what sponsor's do you remember most from the broadcast? Also, What percentage of people viewed the broadcast and immediately went online to check out the gear that the athletes were representing?

For the casual person, "wow that chick that just won had the K-Swiss logo all over their jersey. I didn't know they did tri stuff. I wonder what the details are" (Goes online / looks up a local shop) and MAYBE buys something.

I think it's more about brand recognition that anything else. The people in the front get most of the camera time/magazine exposure. And that time leads to advertisement. However, there are also advertising area's in the mid-pack and bop.

I believe the bottom line is... People are going to buy something just because Pro X wore it and won.

Well heck, you didn't even list her bike I don't think--I'm pretty sure she rides a Pinarello...Nuun is also a sponsor I believe, and whomever the Accelerade people are (pacific sports lab or something?). Of course, K-Swiss and Tri-Sports (coincidental with the post maybe..hmmm. ) are also sponsors. 

With the non-profit I work with, I pay a great deal of attention to the on-goings of triathlon industry--Twitter is likely the best classroom for knowledge on all of this, and I hardly pay attention, it just pops up on the right corner of the screen and I happen to remember much of what I read, even if at a glance.
