Dallas Athletes Racing

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 24m 22s
Overall Rank = 214/402
Age Group = Clyde over 40
Age Group Rank = 10/24
Pre-race routine:

Up early, two slices of homemade bread with honey
Event warmup:

Ran a couple of laps around transition. Knew I would be waiting a while, so I didn't even bother to get in the pool.
Swim
  • 06m 12s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

good swim - concentrated on just being smooth. Passed the two folks ahead of me at 200m jammed myself ahead of the one person so they couldn't fight me off at the wall. Passed a couple of more in the next 100m, including one coming up to the ladder.

Why is the bottom step of the ladder always broken?

Ran out off the building and was slapped by the cold air... brisk...
What would you do differently?:

Swim more than 8 times in a year.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

Transition was pretty big... yeah, I'm going with that. I just took too long drying off before putting on the long sleeve shirt. Also went with full finger gloves for the bike because it was chilly - should have skipped those
What would you do differently?:

No gloves, be faster, especially running with the bike - I think I tend to trot...

Bike
  • 41m 36s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Went strong out of transition, basically hopped on the bike while everyone else was stopped getting on their bike. Tried to ride hard. The hills just kicked my backside. On second loop, passed by someone who was wrecked out on the side of the road. Spectators and police were there. When I came around to make the turn back to transition, the fire dept was talking to a cop. Then they just take off straight without turning the sirens or anything back on and and I have to lock up the brakes to keep from being hit by the fire dept. I thought they should have been a bit more careful seeing as how there were cyclists everywhere. I hope the kid is okay, looked like his pedal hit the curb and it wiped him out...
What would you do differently?:

Train more on the bike, I have not been hitting it hard enough

Transition 2
  • 01m 58s
Comments:

Thought I was moving faster than this... still trotting I guess
What would you do differently?:

No mas trot
Run
  • 31m 24s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Was trying to push it, it took the first mile to get comfortable - especially with the uphills - and then I felt pretty good. Ended up 30-40ft behind a twenty one year old kid who was moving at about the right pace, so I just tired to keep up until the finish. Popped out from behind him and passed him during the run-in to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Push a bit harder during mile 2 and 3 - I think I had a bit more in me since I didn't feel like puking after crossing the line... Funny, this would have been close to my PR for a 5k had it not been for yesterday... I was less than a minute and half from hitting my standalone 5k PR...
Post race
Warm down:

Breath

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training, gravity (on the hills anyway)

Event comments:

DA put on a good race, I will have to do this one again.

Nice race!  Especially like the part about passing the 21 year old!  Nice run getting so close to that PR.  Yes, you were smart to stay out of the water before the swim. Brrrrrr!!!!
