i think i'm already registered for the long course. registered this year but had to shift my registration to 2006. talked to the registration director last year, but when i called to double check more recently, i found out she's no longer in charge. SO, i need to make sure i have a spot. if i do, i'll be there!

I worked this one as a volunteer last year and thought it was well run. I wanted to do this one but my step daughter graduates from highschool that day and if I were to run a tri in the morning I think the princess patrol would hang me out to dry. It is certianly on my list for 07 but then I live 15 minutes away!

Buffalo and Liberty are on my list for "potential first Oly's". Any preference between the two? Then again, my A race is a sprint and I may want some short course practice.

We'll have to see how Jan-Feb-March pan out.

I have it on my list right now.  When I get back from the 1/2 mary next week I am actually going to meet with a coach who is going to help me plan my off-season and my race plan for 06.  I'm thinking the plan I have right now is a little too aggressive .

No worries, Kelly.  I'm also planning on the sprint.  My first OLY is going to happen 7.15.06.  You heard it here first!  Smile

This will also be my first Tri. I am signed up for the sprint.

I will be doing the Apple Duathlon the weekend before. That will be my first multi-sport event. I have to do this one, because it is in my town.

I'm doing this one again this year (sprint). 2005's race was my first triathlon ever and it's in my hometown so I'm really excited to do it again.

Last year I didn't use a wetsuit because I didn't have one and thought I could get by without it. Everything worked out ok on race day, but man were some of those training swims COLD! On the upside, it made the water on race day feel balmy!

On a side note...
There is a really great "Beginner Triathlon" course offered at Gold's Gym in Buffalo in the spring. I took the class last year. I learned a ton, met some training partners, and it was cheap! Each class focuses on a different leg of the race (plus one night for transitions and one for just general info) - they bring an "expert" in for the first 1/2 of the class, then the second 1/2 you actually get in the pool, on the bike, etc. It really helped me feel more prepared going into my first triathlon. Actually, I'm thinking about doing it again since I still have a lot more to learn!

Hopefully it won't be too bad, especially with the warm weather expected next week.

I did this race in '04 and '05. In '04, it was in Lake Pulaski (sp?) and that water was about 61 degrees on race day. I have to say, it was a bit chilly.  Last year the race was moved to Buffalo Lake and the water temp was 68 degrees, if memory serves. That actually was ok. A little cold at first, but not terrible.

If you get the chance to get in and OWS before the race, I highly recommend it. It's just a whole different animal than pool swimming. And on race day, be sure to get in and get acclimated to the water before your wave starts. Not getting used to the water was my mistake in '04 and I about hyperventilated when my face hit the water.

Take heart, it's only 1/4 mile!

Water temps here in N MN are brutal. I am just itching to get an OWS in prior to the race, but I have no idea whether it will happen or not.

AcesFull - 2006-05-19 12:58 PM Current surface temps in MN lakes are in the mid 50s.  I know they are supplying caps, but I think I'm wearing a neoprene cap under the required Buffalo Tri cap.  My first OWS is gonna be a chiller, and I gotta wonder why I waited until I moved to MN from VA before I took up triathlon.

Do you happen to have a link to water temps in local lakes?

AcesFull - 2006-05-19 2:24 PM I'm torn about an OWS before race day.  I'd like the experience, but freezing my *** off twice seems like a bad idea, when I could just freeze once.

I'm with Kelly, I'd recommend AT LEAST 1 before your tri.  My goal is to get 10 in before July 1 (my first OFFICIAL tri this year).  Pool swimming and OWS are definitely different animals.  But then again, this is coming from a guy that took his first swim lessons in college...

Thx for the update. It'll be my first Oly so am a bit nervous about a long cold swim. Will definitely practice this weekend.
