Comments: Started overheating at about 1-1/2 miles - right where we left the road - so I took off the light fleece. This was right on the gradual uphill though so I didn't really pay attention to my pace and ended up going a little too fast and getting my HR a bit too high. Took me maybe 1/2 mile to get it back to where I was ok with it. What would you do differently?: Lose one of the layers and be cold at the start for a few minutes. Need more time on the trail. Transition 1
Comments: Had some issues with my helmet. The velcro connecting to the back of the helmet kept coming off when I put the helmet on ovet the beanie. Finally got it on, but it was a little frustrating. What would you do differently?: I may need a bigger helmet because this happens sometimes even when I'm naked under the helmet. Bike
Comments: There was a dusting of snow, less than an inch, but it was sticking so I decided to use my mountain bike. The "string" part of the loop was fairly clear with one icy spot & I was kind of kicking myself for taking the MTB, however, the balloon part was snow covered, so I felt better about my decision. Got passed by an older guy on a road bike at about mile 2-1/2 which was kind of demoralizing, but I ended up passing a few other people. Was smiling for most of the ride, although the last 2 miles or so I was pushing kind of hard because I could see someone a little ways behind me. By the end my core was still pretty warm (even sweating a little) but my hands, legs and especially nose and cheeks were very cold What would you do differently?: Need more time on the bike. Get more comfortable in different conditions. Transition 2

Post race
Warm down: Walked over to transition, picked up my stuff with some water and a banana and went to my car to warm up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. Had a long swim yesterday and didn't get to bed until late so that may have had a little part, but mostly I think I just need to get more miles behind me. Event comments: I think a race in these conditions is going to bring out the more bad-ass competitors. I would say I ended up in the FOBOBOP - I was mostly able to race my own race but I still got somewhat caught up in trying to keep up with people or ahead of people. A 4 mile run is just witin my limits now, but if I end up doing that in other races it might cost me a little more. Fun time being out in the elements though. Last updated: 2005-12-17 12:00 AM

Had a yoghurt and oj for breakfast, made a thermos of hot chocolate which I conveniently left on the table, got some stuff together and headed out the door.
Stayed warm in my car until about 1/2 hour before the race. Had a gel, did a short jog and stretch to warm up and then we were off.
