Ok ya'll- I have been growing out my hair for the past 2 years in order to donate 10 inches to locks of love.  I only have 4 more inches to go, and my hair dresser told me by then end of next year I should have 10 inches to donate.  But... I am getting sick of it already.  It's so long that it tangles really easy and even using conditioner it's a pain to comb out.  And it takes FOREVER to dry.  It just hangs there since it's long and I can't do a whole with it.  I can't imagine it being any longer and not cutting it for another year.  I'm tempted to get a few inches cut off, but then I don't want to feel guilty knowing that if I just hang in there a little longer it can go to a good cause.  Have any of you donated to lock of love?  Was it rewading and worth it?  I need some encouragement to keep growing my hair.  Right now it's getting on my nerves   I can't take it anymore!!

My wife can testify to my fixation in this area, but I voted all women always look better with longer hair.  Not that women can't look good with short hair, just that they look BETTER with longer hair.  And that's not one of those "IMHO" comments.  It's always true.  Anyone who disagrees is just wrong.  It is a fundamental truth of the universe and it is indisputable.

I am not currently required to be in therapy for this.  Have a nice day.

smokeater1833 - 2006-01-17 4:37 PM Well if it's getting on your nerves cut it off.

It would still be long if I got 3 inches cut off, so it's not like I'd have short hair or anything.  It would still be way past my shoulders.  I'll have a hair cut next month, so I'll see.

Wouldn't that make me faster?  Now we're talking. I  think the water weight from wet hair will slow me down in tri's.  I think I'm on to something.

Don't make me feel selfish- ok, it worked.  Guilt has set in.  Maybe if I get more highlights or had her add a layer or something I'll like it more.  I need to do something just a little different with it because I'm absolutely sick of it at this point.

I feel your pain. As we all know when to cut one's hair is not an issue to be taken lightly. Oh, the horror stories that I have heard....

I would hazard a guess that your hair is already at least 10 inches long. If you really want to give to Locks of Love and you really want to cut your hair now, the answer is simple: Go to the hairdresser and tell her to take the 10 inches off right now.

This will accomplish 3 things:

1) You will have fulfilled your desire to give to people who need hair.
2) You will not be bothered by your long hair anymore.
3) You will bring yourself closer to the people you are helping by going around with shortish hair for awhile.

Don't worry, it grows back!

Maybe you can get some weights from the gym. Attach them to your hair and maybe it might stretch. You never know.

Four more inches should take about 8 months. How long is it right now? Is the plan to wait until getting 10" cut would return you to your "normal" length? If you got a closely cropped 'do, how much longer would you have to wait?

You could hire a full-time stylist and add some industrial strength goo. Might see what grooming changes people with long hair make. Single braid might be a good low(er)-maintenance solution.

IMFL in November? Think of the late boost when you get the extra ballast removed! ('course, with all the swimming, will it still be useable by Locks of Love?)

They do accept chemically altered hair- as long as it's healthy- I already checked.  They won't take it if it's fried though.

NOPE.

Last year when I went from hair that reached my elbows to boy-short hair, my hairdresser told me that we could have donated the hair if it had not been color treated. Locks of Love has to chemically treat the donated hair so they don't want hair that has already been chemically altered in anyway.

BTW, Hangloose, everyone said I looked much better with short hair than long hair. Long hair is not the end-all, be-all of sexy womanhood.

I only need 4 more inches for it to get cut chin length.  Only 3 if I cut it just above the chin, which i don't want to do.  I look awful with short hair, but chin length looks ok.  It's layered, so right now technically I can only donate my longest layer.  I'd have to get it cut off in layers and the rest of the layers obviously need to grow more than 3-4 inches.

Here's what I got from the locks of love.  Check out #5.  Maybe it's up to the discretion of the hair dresser what condition it's in.  Or- it might depend of what type of coloring they use.  But...my hair is donatable

  1. We accept 10" minimum hair length (tip to tip), not wigs, falls, or synthetic hair
  2. Please bundle hair in ponytail or braid.
  3. Hair needs to be clean, dry, placed in a plastic bag, then padded envelope.
  4. We need hair from men and women, young and old, all colors and races.
  5. Hair may be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged (if unsure, ask your stylist).
  6. Hair swept off the floor is not usable.
  7. Hair cut years ago is usable if it has been stored in a ponytail or braid.
  8. Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated from the ponytails and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.
  9. You may pull curly hair straight to measure the minimum 10".
  10. The majority of all hair donated comes from children who wish to help other children.
  11. Layered hair may be divided into multiple ponytails for donation.
  12. Please note: Anyone can cut your hair as long as the above guidelines are followed.

Renee- you don't need to argue with me.    My friend donated her hair and went to the same hair dresser as me and had highlights.  They accepted her hair and they'll accept mine too

Then what is coloring?  It would be the same as highlighting, dying, etc.
