Subject: Another reminder to watch out for those cars!

Hi,

It's been a while since I posted anything.  The most recent was about my falling down on the job and breaking my elbow.  I had exclaimed that my injury wasn't a "sexy" training type injury. Well, I must of jinxed myself, because I was hit by a car while running  last week.  I was in a crosswalk, dressed with reflectors, orange vest, blinky red light etc.  The lady said she didn't see me.  I swear we made eye contact.

Anyway, I am fortunate that I walked away with only a broken shoulder.  I am totally bummed out, that I can't swim for a while and may never get my old stroke back. Lot's of PT ahead of me.  Could of been worse, right!

So in closing, please, please, please be careful out there. I can't believe I got hit.

Take care everyone.

YOu did call the police and report the accident, RIGHT.

We all need to be more proactive in all of our safety. We need to contact local offcials and elected officals and urge them for tougher enforcement and harsher punishment for reckless driving, especially when pedestrians or cyclists are involved. Drivers get off way too lightly for the lifes they disrupt and destroy, because they needed to save 2 seconds while driving.

Not a suit-happy type of person, but at some point the stupid ought to penalized ... perhaps she would then put down her cell phone/Big Mac/diet Coke/cup of coffee/lip stick/eye liner/<insert something a guy would have in his hand that I cannot think of right now so you don't seem sexist>.

The more I run on the side of the road, the more I notice that the last thing drivers are doing is, well, driving.

Glad that you survived her stupidity, but am sorry about your shoulder.  Hope you heal well (and quickly!).

Sorry to hear it. I hope your recovery goes well.

I'm with the bear. This is why we have civil courts.

Thanks for the well wishes.

Yes, the police and paramedics arrived on the scene and took me to the nearest ER.  The driver was ticketed with "failure to yeild to a pedestrian".  A police report was filed. As far as law suit.... money will not replace my lost training time, pain, etc.  But her insurance will be paying the medical bills. Right now I just trying to get healthy again. I am grateful that the damage wasn't worse AND that she stopped at all.  We've had a rash of hit and runs here in the Pacific NW.  The driver was very remorseful.

I am still very angry and depressed.  Time will heal that too I guess.

Your words of caution are appreciated!  I think some of the best advice I've heard is to bike and run like you are invisible.  Basically always assume that motorists can see you.   I never assume that they are going to give me the right of way - or even that they see me.  So far.. so good.

But I will mention (interestingly enough) that my hubby was also almost run into by a deer the other night while running near our house.  What's up with that?  Is there some sort of deer conspiracy?  Runners beware!

WOW!  That stinks!  I know that missing training due to an injury is depressing.  Hopefully you can find something equally fun and fulfilling to do with your time.  And, I glad she was 'remorseful' (!) and will be picking up your bills (how about take out of your choice once a week while you're rehabbing and can't really cook?!?).  With the increase in population in SOFLA this time of year, I run like I'm deaf.  Everyone down here is always late for Ma Jong ... .  I had to get a trainer to be able to keep up on the bike.  Best of luck with your recovery, and keep up with your BT friends to keep your spirits up!  Laughing
