How funny is it that we're already complaining about it and it hasn't even started yet?

I think they should ring the cowbells and blast air horns during the routines.

MORE COWBELL!!!

They should use the cowbell test when deciding on sports to include in the Olympics. If a cowbell improves the viewing of the sprt then it should be in.

Short track speed skating & cowbell? Yes - its in.

Figure skating & cowbell? No - Its out.

Curling & cowbell? Yes - it's in.

diving & cowbell? no - it's out.

Without figure skating drama we'd just have to go the entire 4 years between gymnastics dramas.....

Yes.

And figure skating is about as much of a sport as golf is (waiting for the flames to descend)

Or curling.

*ducks to avoid flying objects*

I'm in no way defending figure skating but it is far from the only sport that has judging as a part of the scoring. Do you feel the same way about halfpipe, moguls, ski jumping, etc?

I like watching those events, but I prefer the ones that the time is the only determining score.

But dude, any kind of snow sport is a real sport, so the judging just doesn't matter. All skiing sports pass the cowbell test, except biathlon.

Seriously, having started this, I agree figure skating is an incredibly athletic activity, (as is ballet, gymnastics and even dance team!), but I just hate all the drama, and want to see more action sports. More short track, more moguls, more men's downhill and giant slalom!

Nah, the dance teams are for the girls not graceful enough for ballet

But then, that could be the ex-ballet dancer snob in me talking ...

I agree, but figure skating doesn't need the Olympics to draw exposure. It'd be horribly popular even without it.

ChipmunkHeart - 2006-02-13 11:23 AM

However, I will say that "sports" like figure skating, et al are given a great platform in the Olympics to show off what they do and what they do well ... great exposure to arts that wouldn't otherwise have it.

I have a real hard time trying to figure out why figure skating is so popular.

It is probably the same reason that cheerleading camps have become so popular, and how so many high schools here in the south have "dance teams" for the girls who aren't either a) pretty enough or b) good enough to be cheerleaders to perform at halftime.

I'm surprised more of the girls on these teams aren't in the ortho's office with ACL injuries, from all the high kicks they do. I dunno... I just find the minidress uniforms and the white knee boots silly.

I live for white knee boots...

but I digress. I was neither a cheerleader nor a danceline chick. My mom was a 60s cheerleader, so I had to rebel. I was a hard-drinking gymnast.  Graceful? Ummmm...

There's subjective judging in moguls.  Still, I love watching it.

She fell and they still got the silver medal? Did everyone else suck too?

courtney_leone - 2006-02-14 11:25 AM Did anyone watch the pairs skating last night and see the last couple from China? The guy threw her and she fell and smacked the ice and kept on skating even though her knee was swelling? They got the silver medal! I thought it was good drama.

Any sport where it would be noticed that you are not wearing makeup and not smiling should be excluded from the Olympics.

A corollary to this would be that no Olympic sport can be adequately performed while smiling.

This morning, Katie with the Russian gold medalist couple.

"We're playing this clip where she fell on her head. You might want to look away. I'm sure that's very painful when you landed on your head. How do you feel about it today?"

What a horse's butt. No disrespect to horses.

Interesting that you can get a time out in skating (kinda like Tanya Harding's shoelace thing, I guess).

It'd be funny if they could do that in swimming:l..."ooh...cramp! wait...everybody stop. OK...I'm better now. Do over?"

They were trying an extremely difficult move and she fell flat on her knees. They had to stop the program, she was crying, and everyone said she was too hurt to preform but after a few minutes they were able to continue and still preformed an extremely difficult program. They deserved the silver! And yes, most of them did suck. The US team = not so good.

Apparently she didn't do her research before hand and learn that the girl has no recollection of the incident and refuses to watch recordings of it because it was very traumatic to her and took them months as a couple to get over and work through.

As much fun as we make of this "sport" being dropped on your head from seven feet in the air would be tough to get over.

Actually, what's really disgraceful is that Katie has interviewed the couple in the past about this incident which occurred 2 years ago! She already knew!!!

I saw the clip of her fall the other night and I didn't want to see it again. The thud as her head hit the ice was a horrible sound. I can well imagine that this skater certainly didn't want to see it either!

Katie is an idiot.

I love this thread!

I love the cowbell rule-If the sport is enhanced while ringing cowbells, it's in. (Moguls in...figure skating out)

I love the "olypic sports can't be performed while smiling" rule.

I love the fact that the best drama in figure skating was due to a traumatic injury.

Give me speed and snow anyday, baby!

If they insist on including figure skating, it should be self judged. YOu know that awesome feeling you get when everythign just gels and clicks? I'm sure figure skaters get that when they go to perform their lutzes, camels, toe loops, etc. WHen it all clicks, give yourself a 10! If everyone gets gold medals than the probably all deserved them. WHen you skate off the ice in tears because you caught your skate and it just didnt "click", well, give yourself a 2 or 3 and try again next time.

Ya know, I said almost the exact same thing to my wife about 4 days ago, but the Chinese silver medal performance made a believer out of me.

and, yes, Katie Couric is a complete moron.
