Subject: Should I Allow Myself to Gain Weight in Out-Season?

I've recently seen articles saying it's ok and, even good, to gain weight in the out-season.  7-8% of racing weight.  This year I think I got pretty close to a comfortable racing weight (5'5" and 135 lbs).  Down 10 pounds since January.  Any less and I start looking guant and folks start saying they don't want me to 'disappear'.

Gaining a few pounds will happen naturally for me over the holidays but a whole 10 pounds?  It's just so hard to wrap my head around the notion that gaining the weight I lost over the year would be a good thing.

I'm leaning towards keeping it to a 5 pound weight gain by January.  Already starting this weekend given that I'm visiting parents and getting fed very well this weekend.

Any thoughts?

There's an article in the most recent Triathlete on this issue. The premise is that if you gain a bit of weight and keep training, when you loose that weight again your fitness will improve and you should be a bit faster.

I'd rather just maintain weight and get faster, but that's just me.

I think 10 lbs. is too much, personally. I've put on 3 lbs. since my season ended, and I seem to be hanging out there. 5'9" here. 135-136 perfect race weight for me. I'm at 139-140 right now. I'm hoping not to gain at all over the holidays, but if i do, I want to keep it at 2 lbs. I guess I feel like some gain is probably good. I lost a lot of weight last summer. I figure that by putting some on, I'll lose all of that and then some when training really picks up in the spring. I don't want to know what I'd look like at 130. It'd be scary.

I just train, my weight does what it does.  If I train less I put on a bit of weight.  If I train more I get lighter. (at least I look and feel that way to me.)  I don't get on a scale.  My weight is no measure of anything to me.  How far, how fast, and how much rest is all I care about.  I eat healthy, and I eat when I'm hungry, and I eat alot if I'm alot hungry.  I figure it's my body telling me it needs fuel.  I've got enough going on in my life without caring what I weigh.

I pretty much do what Left-Brain mentioned and since I'm no longer doing such long workouts or 2 a days, naturally the scale is climbing. I do find it unnerving though b/c I do regularly chk wt, I'm thinking a few lbs is fine and it'll come off again once ramp-up for next season begins. I'm a big believer in eating when you're hungry, keeps the metabolism humming along and keeps you satisfied.

I still have another 10-15 pounds to lose to get to what I think is my race weight. I'm hoping not to gain anything over the off season, and am even wishing I could lose 5-10 before March, since if this past season is any indication, I don't seem to be able to lose weight while I'm racing.

I generally choose not to ever let my weight go up by more than about 4 lbs if I can help it.

IMO, a lot depends on your history:  If you have been obese and lost significant weight, I don't think it's ever a really good idea to give yourself permission to gain weight (unless you got down to an unusually low weight for a race or something)...sort of like being an alcoholic in recovery and saying, "Well, over the winter I'll just allow myself to drink a few drinks a week."  Might work out okay, but statistics say likely otherwise.  OTOH, if you don't have a history of being significantly overweight, then a bit of winter weight probably isn't going to kill you.

My eating habits and food choices are pretty healthy and I try to keep those the same year-round.  I gain a little weight in the off-season but it's not from eating a bunch of desserts during the holidays.

Give your body and soul a well deserved break... it is the "off season" for crying out loud... enjoy yourself and indulge in those things you deprive yourself of for most of the year... the weight will come back off when you get back at it for next season... stop getting on the scale every day... enjoy life... for a short couple of months anyway... live guilt free and enjoy! Cool

As a female over 40, I would say no. I gained 10 pounds post-ironman 2009 and I'm still carrying it. One of my goals this offseason is to get rid of it. It seems like once I indulge, it is really hard for me to enjoy it in moderation. Good luck and let me know how you re-regulate yourself. I could use some tips!

I think this is a very good point.  I think it really depends on your history with weight.  I need to take off some pounds but if/when I make it to a goal weight I know I won't be able to say I'll just put on a few pounds so I'll get faster when they come off. Just too risky.  Ironically for me, it's easier to lose weight during the winter as I'm doing a lot of skiing at a hard intensity along with running.  And if I plan right I have good, healthy food available to me but snacking isn't easy like it is on weekends when I'm around the house.

I think it matters on how lean your race weight is. If you run a 7-8% BF during race season for pure health reasons I'd maybe let myself get to 12%ish in the offseason.

I just finshed reading "Racing Weight" by Matt Fitzgerald.  He suggest your offseason weight should be no more than 8% greater than your peak performance race weight.

You mean off-season right? ;-)

Don't go too crazy, but don't gain any weight that will take you more than a month to work off. That's my rule of thumb.

do adventure races in the winter then there is never an off season!

I thought the best time to loose weight was in the off season when you are not concerned in keeping energy levels up for race season

I'm sure the vast majority of people don't fall in this category, I know I don't.  But a I have read that a lot of pro endurance athletes loose strength during the season due to the body consuming muscle mass during its need for fuel.  Because of this they need to regain that weight and build back that strength in the off season.  If done properly the body will gain that weight not only replacing the muscle mass you lost during the season but increasing it to leave you better prepared for next season.

Most of us though never work at those levels so I wouldn't think there would be any reason to gain weight.
