Ummm...remember a little thing called "Miracle on Ice"? It can be easily argued that that game was the beginning of the end of the former Soviet Union and the cold war. Not saying that Davis could have done anything remotely similar in these games but the 1980 Winter Olympics DID have an impact on our country and world history. Edited by Flyboy 2006-02-21 2:52 PM |

Giver ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah...but that's gotta be a special case, not common cause. You could turn it around though, and say that all the gold medals won by doped up German swimmers was the beginning of the downfall of the DDR. Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think that Shani Davis is the man. Sure, he may not be a team player, but the Olympics are much less the team event that purports them to be. I'll probably stir up even more controversy for that comment, but it's true. Everyone is focused on winning their own personal medals, as they should be. Excluding track, it seems to me like relays are kind of exhibitions. They are afterthoughts for the athletes. Shani Davis had every right to do what he did, and Chad Hedrick needs to get over himself. He did even win all of his individual events. Too bad we aren't spending more time focusing on great moments like when Joey Cheek announced that he's going to donate the 25,000 that he got from winning the gold to help out in the Darfur conflict. Yeah, I think that he deserves more recognition for his classiness than do two warring athletes in a sport that very few care about other than every four years when the olympics roll around. |

And then backed it up by giving the $15,000 he got for silver to the same cause. And as a result of that, the charity received matching donations so far to tune of $250,000. That's certainly something that'll be remembered and have a much greater lasting impact. You're right. More power to Joey! -Chris |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() and now in his interview after the 1500, Shani is going to call out Chad, and say he wishes he would have been "a good teammate" and "shook my hand" after the race... uh, Shani, I thought you weren't part of a skating team here? It's all about you, right? Still a pr*ck. |

It's all about you, right? Still a pr*ck. Yep - thought the same thing. Doesn't bother me that he didn't race in the pursuit at all. That's completely his choice. But for a guy who claims to be here as an individual, skating for himself and his country, he really needs to quit crying about not getting Hedrick's approval and congratulations afterwards. I don't get why that's so important to him. They both had similar responses in the post-race interviews and then Shani brought up the past again. At this point he's just bringing it upon himself and it's tough to feel sorry for someone like that. I'm glad he medaled though. Both of them. Too bad it wasn't gold. |

![]() | ![]() I changed my opinion after hearing him last night. It went from bad to good. Maybe he just got caught in the media soap opera machine that's all part of the olympics. Gotta hand it to the guy. He's happy to stay quiet and just skate and win medals. Unlike some American skiiers. Plus, I now think that there should be a rule for American winter olympians. I think you should have to be from a place that actually has snow or ice in the winter. That would mean no speed skaters from Texas. Same should go for the NHL. Hockey in Florida just ain't right. ![]() | ![]() Just thought through his position a little more. As he said, his key race came just a day, if I remember right, after the team pursuit. If his main goal was to win an individual medal, and his main race was the 1000, then it makes sense to put everything else on the second tier until the 1000 is over. Davis coulda used a little coaching in how to give a good interview, but so what. Plus, Hedrick was trying to mess with the legacy of one of my sports heroes, Eric Heiden. And Hedrick comes from a state where there is no snow or ice. Maybe you shouldn't be allowed to be a winter olympian unless you can name 26 different kinds of snow and ice. All part of the fun of the Olympic soap opera back stories. |
