Total Time = 2h 35m 7s
Overall Rank = 56/140
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Arrived EARLY! Set up transition site. Went to body marking and picked up my time chip. Had pop-tart, detour protein bar, banana and propel for breakfast. No food within 2 hrs of event and that proved to workout nicely. Pasta party night before. Chatted w/ TNT team mates and checked out other peoples setups, etc...., to pick up any tips/tricks.
Event warmup:

Walk. Stretch. Head in water but no swim.
Swim
  • 25m 14s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

Sighting proved to be the most challenging. Not really any problems, just wasn't really used to it. Was able to set a nice pace and just maintain it throughout the entire course. Only once had a whitecap crash on me causing a little gagging. Overall, was a nice course and loved the time trial start.
What would you do differently?:

Work on perfecting my sighting. To much wasted effort. Continue to focus on good stroke technique.
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Short socks worked out nicely. Seemed to go pretty smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Trisuit. Would eliminate and step and speed me up a bit. Might work on putting feet in shoes while pedaling.
Bike
  • 1h 05m 56s
  • 24.5 miles
  • 22.30 mile/hr
Comments:

One gel at beginning and one towards end worked out pretty good. Drank 2 bottles of gatorade which also went ok. Pushed a bit harder than usual to try and make up for my slower run. Towards end, slt backache. Did ride without headband and gloves w/o any problems.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not push quite so hard, especially into the headwinds. Nutrition and fluids was just right. O/W pretty satisfied.
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Transition went pretty smooth. Used YANKZ and they performed beautifully! Certainly sped up the transition. Don't really tighen down enough to give good motion control.
What would you do differently?:

Consider water bottle belt.
Run
  • 1h 00m 46s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 05s  min/km
Comments:

Ran through transition too fast and got myself out of breath. Ran first two miles too fast. Didn't feel like I was getting enough water. Drinking from cups on the run is too difficult. Didn't feel too bad until halfway. Then started to feel some discomfort. Last mile was extremely challenging.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I have a good endurance base, I would begin to work in some speed work to bring my mile/min avg down. Also, do my bricks as race pace, maybe every other week. Basically, just need to keep working the run hard. That is where I lost all the ground I gained on the field in the first two segments. :(
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching and lots of fluids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Running conditioning.

Event comments:

First race I have ever done. However, I would highly recommend it. Had a wonderful time. Pictures to come.

Nice race John! Very impressed with the bike speed. Your results sound like mine...any gains made on the bike evaporate during the run. I too have to work on getting my run times down. Sounds like you had a great time!

Nice Job John! Sorry I didn't get a chance to run into you there. Sounds like you had a really nice effort in your first tri. I'm sure your hooked in now! MIM was my first go at the Oly distance so I can't complain about much (except the &#$#@(@& WIND!!)

Later,
Paul

Awesome race.  I am envious of your swim, bike and run splits.  Looks like you were well prepared.  Watch out, you could be dangerous on your next attempt.  Very impressive outing.
