Total Time = 1h 37m 47s
Overall Rank = 195/235
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/10
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45am to shower and get dressed. Had pnb toast, coffee. Loaded my stuff, loaded my bike. Drove the hour to Hilton Head and got marked and chipped. Racked my bike, had some gatorade and found Russ (gullahcracker). We both put on our new and fancy BT tatoos and then walked out to the beach to check the ocean temp. It was nice, so we were contemplating not wearing the wetsuits, but then I overheard a girl squawking about how she got pocked by three jellyfish the day before...so I decided to wear mine, if for no other reason to fend off the jellies.
Event warmup:

After the pre-race meeting everyone headed to the beach for a little swim meeting, I scooted off to the nice and fancy hidden bathrooms. BTW, all bathrooms on Hilton Head are pristine. In the bathroom I put on my swim cap and realized I still had my earrings on....and they're purty and some of my favorites, so I hid them in the bathroom, I didn't have time to thake them back to transition. You don't want to know where. I was nervous about missing the swim start, so I ended up jogging down the beach to be able to get there on time. So that was a nice little run to shake the nerves and get ready to swim, baby.
Swim
  • 14m 57s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

When I got in the water I looked behind me and I was the last one, but I could see that everyone (like 100 people) were drifting in and were going to miss buoy #2. They did and had to double back, but now I was in front of a lot of them. I passed a good many, as well. I just loved the feel of that bobbing, wavy ocean....the temp was perfect. Not too warm, and definitely not cold. A nice surprise. Another nice surprise was when I turned to breathe on the ocean side (as opposed to the shore side) I saw six dolphin really close and a flock of pelicans over the dolphin. It was fantastic. I just tried to enjoy the moment and enjoy the swim. I wanted to imprint that memory in my brain for when I'm 90 years old and am looking back on my life. Sweet.
What would you do differently?:

Just be faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

This transition includes a 200 yard run from the beach, through the sand volleyball courts, and across two lanes of road....hence the long T1 time. But I loved not having to deal with the socks! Just grabbed my helmet, threw on my shoes and left. I noticed Russ' bike still racked and wondered briefly if he'd drowned. Found out later he was one of those that missed the buoy.
Bike
  • 41m 47s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 17.95 mile/hr
Comments:

A pb bike time for me. Again, I just really tried to enjoy it. I looked around at the beautiful palm trees and really tried to incorporate some joy in with the pumping and the sweat. I passed a good many people, mainly the mtn. bike brigade. On my third lap cracker passed me and I was glad to see he was breathing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing here, just ride more on the new bike and put my aerobars on.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Crowded racks left me no where to put my bike, someone took my spot so I just had to make do. Got my shoes on and realized at mile 1 that I forgot to take the stick of gum out of my shoe that I always put in there to have for the run. Squishy, but now my left foot is minty fresh. My race belt came apart, but I fixed it pretty quickly on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Remember the gum.
Run
  • 36m 43s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 11m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm not sure if it was the humidity or what, but I was H-O-T. My legs felt good, a little heavy, but not bad. I was just suffering from the heat...which is crazy cuz it was only 80 degrees. Anyway, ended up running a bit slower than I thought I could, but tried to enjoy it and still push myself. It was a tough run for me, but I was happy just to not be home folding laundry, so I smiled the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Be superfast.
Post race
Warm down:

Cleaned up, changed clothes, retrieved my earrings from the bathroom. Went to the awards thingy.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat on the run, still having big booty issues. Must drop some more weight.

Event comments:

I just want to say that this race was different than the others in the types of people that were racing. Normally I see all different body types, not today. 99% of these women looked like Kona calendars. I think because of the fear of the water temps this time of year, it tends to keep a lot of the beginners away. I am not usually intimidated, but I think I was a little today. I will not beat myself up for not doing better against them, I am still a beginner and I really have improved times each race. It's just hard to be such a competitive person and, at the same time, be so slow.

But when I crossed that finish line, the joy was all still there...times or no times, I thoroughly enjoyed this race and really didn't want it to be over. Okay, back to the laundry.

So where does one hide earrings in a public bathroom?

Great job on the race - PB on the bike, very sweet. Sounds like it was a really awesome day, what with the dolphins and all. You did great.

Awesome job, Shannon!  Best RR I've read in a while!  You and I think alike about the whole Kona-supermodel thing.  I think you and I would be great buddies out on the course.  Congrats!

It's not so much that they looked like supermodels, more like they could kick my butt.  And they did.  I think I could out-Goddess them (I am the Goddess) I just couldn't outrun them.

Yeah, we'd be good buddies. Thanks for the love.

Nope, buc, no Athena/Clydesdales this time......not only did they not have the category (they never do for this race) I didn't even see any!  One other girl and maybe 3 or 4 guys.  A very fit bunch.  Like those barefoot Ethiopian marathoners.....seriously, they were tough.

After yesterdays race I drove back to Beaufort and went to the "Y". I soaked in the quiet solitude of the hot spa and admired my new tri suit, my shiny legs and thought "Gee I really sucked today", oh well I'll get 'em next time.
But as for you, well your improvements are astonishing. Don't let the pencil stick girls get you down, they've got no mojo. You race and and have the mojo. I always enjoy racing with you and Kent and the others who are soon becoming our "bunch". (And Kent shows up with yet another woman, not his ex or fiance, freakin guy's a gigolo.)
Your bike was sweet and your effort was tremendous. Keep it up girl and when I win the lotto I'll sponsor you as a full time athlete with a Romanian nanny who also does waxing.....of the legs.
See ya

Great race Shannon! That's awesome speed on the bike! I like your take on the OW ocean swim. I want to get that comfortable that I'm appreciating the wildlife, not expecting them to be waiting on my carcass to bob their way..... Great job!

I'm kidding.

Great race report. It's hard to be a mere mortal out there on the course, but then, everyone out there racing away from their own issues,  regardless of whether those issues are visable to the naked eye. The important thing, the thing you've mastered, is to get there in the first place.

And you totally kick my butt on the bike.

Great race, Shannon.  You rocked the bike in a major way.  I hope to be that fast when race season finally starts up here in the North country.

BTW: I do hope you sterilized those earrings after storing them in a public bathroom.  I don't care how pristine it is... :0
