You should definitely try raw almonds. I think they are best that way, but some brands carry noticeable better almonds than others. I like the ones from Blue Diamond (@ Target). I also like raw peanuts with raisins.

I usually bring one or two pieces of fruit (plum, apple, kiwi, banana, orange) to work every day. This might be weird, but I also often bring a cup of raw, frozen mixed veggies (yep, the one with the lima beans), and eat it when it's defrosted a little. oooh, frozen grapes are good, too, almost like dessert.

I make something kinda like Lisa's sweet potato fries every once in a while - but I also add garlic, crushed rosemary, and creole seasoning, and use russet potatoes too. Yummy!

The Walford salad someone posted above looks good - got to try that one.

But my all time favorite healthy snack has got to be Greek yogurt w/fruit & grape nuts cereal.
I use the 5 oz Dannon Oikos plain Greek yogurt - my favorite so far and just the right volume. I buy frozen blueberries & raspberries - much cheaper that way - and defrost 0.5-1 cup for 30 sec in the microwave. Add the yogurt - there is just enough fruit juice to flavor the yogurt nicely - mix in 2 Tbsp of grape nuts for fiber & crunch. It's the healthiest snack I've found, and so, so good. Only about 180-200 calories, also. Love it!

I'm loving clementines this time of year!!!

Also, low sodium string cheese, greek yogurt with granola, cottage cheese, rolled up turkey slices, and humus.

I as well do enjoy cottage cheese w/carrots or celery or whatever I have on hand. My food processor makes its so easy to make a garlic heavy hummus for any occasion. I always have enjoyed apples or most stone fruit w/peanut butter and my Boy Dog loves the smell of opening a jar of organic peanut butter. So he and I love peanut butter based snacks. My friend Amber asked me many moons ago if I would like ants on a log. I said yes and had no idea that she calls peanut butter on celery topped w/raisins Ants On A Log!!! Funny A?

My other snacks are from Big Lots. I buy Cliff Bars when they are 50 cents each, pretzels stuffed w/peanut butter, and any nuts they have available as they are so much cheaper at Big Lots.

@ Lisa c, I BBQ sweet potatoes all the time. If I have room, I will cut them nickel length. For saving time I will slice them pretty thick and add a nice heat oil, rosemary, and dust lightly w/garlic salt. I then put them on the top rack while I BBQ whatever it is I am cooking at that time. And Lisa, your right, THEY ROCK!!!

Someone else mentioned string cheese. I havent had any string cheese in so long. Gr8 idea and I will be picking some up soon.

So to carry this healthy idea a little further and change topics....... What dish will you be bring to a friends, family, company, etc. party during the holidays???? Any ideas for me when I head to my brothers house this X-Mas that would be shared w/about 6-8 folks???? Again, healthy snacks before dinner is what I am asking. Thanx for your time and happy holidays.

Peace

The Padre

jenniefrost - 2011-12-02 4:01 AM I like almonds and take it every day.We reduced our consumption of carbohydrates (all that pasta) because i was not well with this. We eat lots of vegies but our protein consumption has soared. No more shakes or anything.

That is exactly how I lost all my weight..

I love the sweet potato fries idea with the seasoning. I have kept them simple I need to change it up like this. I am going to try that tomorrow. I love sweet potatoes I just hate cutting them up.

... the "banana ice cream" looks good - I'm going to try that one!

My fav snack: cottage cheese, banana, dates and cinnamon. A bit of banana flavored yogurt makes it even better!

My NEW thing is baked or broiled grapes. Pop them in the oven (broil is SO much quicker) pull them out, let them cool a bit--they are SO good!

Sharyn,

I have a granola bar recipe. Have to dig it out. I'll post it here when I find. It was good. Bit of a pain to make, but really from scratch. Toasted the oats and everything.

On the snack question, sunflower seeds, apples with peanut butter, homemade trail mix (granola with banana chips, semi-sweet chocolate, plain peanuts, raisins.

Looking for the recipe!

If I need a third meal in the evening, then it would be a "snack" of banana ice cream:

2 frozen bananas (peeled)

1/4 cup cashews

2 Tb Better Than Milk powder (vanilla)

1/4 cup coconut water (or vanilla coconut or almond milk)

Blend in a food processor, using only enough liquid to blend ingredients without making it soupy.  Top with barley malt sweetened carob chips, shredded coconut, maybe coarsely chopped blueberries, strawberries or pineapple (think banana split) and a layer of carob sauce (or one packet of chocolate Clif shot).

To make it even creamier with an ice cream texture, put ice cream in freezer until it hardens, then thaw and enjoy.

I tried this last night and it was just downright tasty!
Thanks for the recipe!

I like to take a banana, drizzle with honey then sprinke with wheat germ. I also like to take a cellary stick and put cream cheese in the groove and sprinkle with cajun seasoning.

string cheese, yogurt, any fruit, frozen grapes are a favorite around here!, popcorn (air popped with spray butter and white cheddar powder), almonds, pretzels with mustard or hummus, guacamole and chips.

I try to keep veggies cut up and ready to go on the fly - baby carrots, celery, green peppers, cukes are easy to take on the go.

For a treat, I'm hooked on Fiber One brownies - 90 calories and yum!  It's a nice chocolate fix.

Anyone do a snack with quinoa?  I've been making a cold black bean and quinoa salad that I love, but need to branch out a little.
