Lyoshka - 2012-02-23 10:39 AM I'm debating between Racine and Muncie, but leaning towards Racine, so I'll hang with you guys for now, if you don't mind.. I haven't registered yet, but mostly because still trying to recover from Chicago Marathon registration looking forward to a normal Half-Ironman experience this year! Short of the road eating my tires again, anything I do will get me a PR lol

Lena,

After reading your race report from last year, you HAVE to come get some revenge on this race!  Last year before I did it I heard people saying about how they want to get revenge on this course and didn't understand.  Then after the brutal conditions last year and an ailing injury, I can't wait to get revenge!  I hope you do it this year and kick it's butt!

Michael, thank you! I'm really leaning towards Racine Last year was a great weekend, awesome group dinner and I like the venue (except for the biking part lol)....

I juast read it- that was probably the best race report I have ever read!!  More than ever, can't wait to get started!

Thank you, Rob. I don't ever want to write a RR like that again ...but I do feel like I got some of the worst scenarios out of the way, so I *have* to be guaranteed a PR, right?

We booked ours a couple of months ago.  The Radisson is the closest.  It is sold out on line, however I called and was able to get a room because they were holding a block for participants.  I'd suggest calling ASAP.

For how many days are you booking hotels? Are you doing Friday-Sunday or just Saturday-Sunday?

I just called and the Ironman group block is sold outCry.  Kinda bummed because I was looking last week and didn't even think to call - I just looked online.

I live right by the racine zoo/lake and have a group that in past years have gotten together 2-3 times a week for OWS in the lake.

Hey everyone - how is training going?

Has anyone done the Day #3 swim? How much rest are you taking between your 400s?

I'm kind of jumbling things around- mostly due to the usual Masters schedule, and the "simulated triathlons" we do on Saturdays with our Masters group (obviously won't be my rest day!).

One minor thing I did notice- the total for Weeks 1-3 for the run is incorrect - it should be ~2.2 hours and not 1.5 as shown.  Free plan, so I'm sure not complaining!

Signed up for Racine back in December, and am on the fence with this one due to cold water conditions and possibly choppy water. Swimming is definitely my weakest of the 3 right now, and am considering the Ironman National Harbor in Maryland in August.

Anyone who's done Racine before have encouraging words about the swim?

Also, does anyone live near the NW Suburbs of Chicago and looking for a training partner?  I'm up in the Algonquin area.

Did it last year and it was smooth as glass except for the race official who kept wizzing around on the jet ski making a big wake.  It really is not bad.  I have swam in Lake Michigan when it is choppy and it makes it tough but you should be fine.  If you live in Chicago go down to Ohio Street Beach a couple of times and get some good OWS in Lake Michiagan.  Also here is a good video:

BMG,

We have a Tri club, the Multisportmadness group that meets at the Crystal Lake Healthbridge gym on Sundays at 6 AM and we have regular OWS in Crystal Lake in the summer.  If you go online to the site, you can get in touch with us by just sending an email.

To answer your question, the swim is in Lake Michigan and you can get any condition.  The nice thing about the swim is it is one direction - out about 75 yards and then parallel with the beach in about 12 feet of crystal clear water (you can see the bottom and even small fish.  I see those kinds of things even in a race...kinda sick i know) and then back in at mile 1.1.  Two years ago the water was about 64 degrees and the coldest spot just about in Lake Michigan.  But, if you do a few swims up there a few weeks before, you get the cold mental block out of your head and then it becomes not an issue.

Do the Lake in the Hills Tri and make it to the Thursday night supported swims, and then you can work on your open water skills.   There will be 50 other people out there just like you.
