To answer your question, the swim is in Lake Michigan and you can get any condition.  The nice thing about the swim is it is one direction - out about 75 yards and then parallel with the beach in about 12 feet of crystal clear water (you can see the bottom and even small fish.  I see those kinds of things even in a race...kinda sick i know) and then back in at mile 1.1.  Two years ago the water was about 64 degrees and the coldest spot just about in Lake Michigan.  But, if you do a few swims up there a few weeks before, you get the cold mental block out of your head and then it becomes not an issue.

Is the swim always with the current?

Hey Mark, thanks for letting me know. Currently I'm swimming at the Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center in Huntley.

I'd love to hear more about the club -- any chance you'd be up for meeting at Starbucks sometime so I can ask some questions?  Perhaps the one on Randall Road just north of Algonquin Rd?

Let me know and I can DM you my email address.

Thanks!

BMG,

We have a Tri club, the Multisportmadness group that meets at the Crystal Lake Healthbridge gym on Sundays at 6 AM and we have regular OWS in Crystal Lake in the summer.  If you go online to the site, you can get in touch with us by just sending an email.

Do the Lake in the Hills Tri and make it to the Thursday night supported swims, and then you can work on your open water skills.   There will be 50 other people out there just like you.

Mark

Thank goodness for the early nice weather we are having in Minnesota. Was able to get out on the bike for the first time today and thankful for that because it could have been a long 3 hrs on the trainer! Even though the wind sucked!

Hello. I haven't even signed up yet -- I'm scared. But I really want to do this. It would/ will be my first half ironman. I haven't even done an olympic distance, so am I crazy for training and hoping to do this? I have done several sprint triathlons, but I used a hybrid bike. So gotta get a road bike too. Oh boy, I might be nuts!!!

Any females need/ want a training partner just south of the race, near the Illinois/ wisconsin border, let me know!! :-)

I say you go for it. I've never competed in any triathalons before, but I'm signed up for Racine. To date, I've been a runner, and have completed a number of short distance races and four 1/2 marathons. I've only recently begun to swim (started in December) and same with the bike.

Did a half marathon yesterday for a training day does that count? Never thought I would be running 13.1 outside of an actual race. The long bike today would have been brutal if it was not for the 3 other guys I rode with and pushed me beyond that cruising pace, thank goodness for great friends.

Hey y'all.  Signed up a few months ago as well and am looking forward to it.

Did Racine Sprint a few years ago in back to back years.  The first year (my first year) the waves were something else.  Took me as long to get to the first bouy as it did to do the entire rest of the swim.  Second year, the water was ~55.  This is my 6th season so OWS don't bother me much any more.

Looking foward to doing the race as it will be my first HIM.

Since it is sold out I might have to hit up a friend that lives there to see if I can stay with them.

I went from 3 sprints to the Racine 70.3 (with a goal of finishing) and would say the jump in distance wasn't too bad. Personally being somewhat scared of it helped me stick to the training plan as I knew going in uncharted water and wanted to be as prepared as possible. My swim and bike times were right on with projections based on training, the run fell apart , but  had nothing to do with a jump in overall distance

As far as 70.3's go I think Racine is about as easy as the come in terms of course flatness. The town is small so easy to get around and the support is good.

The water can be cold and choppy, but more times than not I've found it flat and fine with a wet suit on in July.

Best of luck with what you decide to do.

I'm doing one on Sunday. I'm one of those people who like to be comfortable with each standalone distance.

How is everyone's training going? I started meeting with a training group here last week. Other than commuting, I still haven't biked outside yet. I'm too lazy to take the bike off the trainer and remove the trainer wheel! I need to do that ASAP.

Took a week off after my 3/18 HM, and by off, I mean swam only once, rode the trainer and a short recovery run.  Now ramping up again, especially outside riding with the nice weather.  Still have my roadie on the trainer for mid-week torture.

Mine is going pretty well, except for an eleven day (did a bunch of running) business trip I had to take last month, plus our Masters pool is closed for spring break.  I'm very slow, but I want to hit my goal and FINISH!!!

Just got back from holiday in Branson - Hills Hills Hills!!! To think I actually considered doing the Branson 1/2 instead of Racine - glad BT advised otherwise.

Training is coming along with the Indy Mini Marathon 4 weeks out. Certainly enjoying the warmer weather.

Hope everyone is enjoying spring!  My sister newbiethalete and I are going to run the Martian Half Marathon next Saturday.  I'm a little behind on the run training, but this will serve as a jump start for sure!!
