Pre-race routine:

Set up transition area. Head back to room. Suntan lotion, body glide, PAM on calves. Got wesuit, cap, goggles and headed towards swim site.
Event warmup:

A couple of minutes easy jogging and light stretching. Jumped in water and swam about 50 yards.
Swim
  • 28m 48s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great swim. Took about 1-1/2 minutes off last years time. Normally I line up on the outside to avoid the crowds but today I had lots of confidence. Besides there were a lot more people on the right side. I swam a perfect line to all the turn buoys and had little traffic. At the ladder there was a lot of pushing and shoving. Some guy was trying to swim over me so I gave him a good push to the side! It was choppy and I swallowed some water but it didn't bother me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!!
Transition 1
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

Good transition. Had some trouble with getting the top part of suit off because I was afraid to pull the zipper down to the bottom. It was recently repaired. Fortunately, I was all the way at the end of the transition and had time to get it off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 17m 59s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.12 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt better than last year and started stronger but got tired the last few miles.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 2
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Quick transition. No problems.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 55m 59s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off feeling good off the bike and did a 9:00 first mile, right on pace. Wanted to average between 8:30 - 8:40 and figured I would pick up the pace between mile 1-3 and have a strong finish. Second mile was 8:47 and I still felt good. At the turn around I hadn't picked up the pace so I started to increase. Missed the mile 4 marker and at 5 I wasn't any faster. Couldn't figure it out. My last mile was tough and my pace slowed a little, averaging a bit over 9 min per mile.
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. There was not enough gas in the tank I guess.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, went to race finish to see Sharon come in. Drank water & Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't know. Recently I was diagnosed with iron deficiency which can cause fatigue. This may have had an effect but not sure. I gave it all I had.

Event comments:

My goal was to beat my last year's time but I was :26 seconds slower. That wasn't bad since the conditions were much worse. Great race, great time with the BT'ers that were at the parties.

Yeah, Bob!!!  Congrats on a great race, given the conditions.  That's a solid, solid effort.  Nice work.

Can't wait until next year to tee this one up with less wind and chop.  Then you'll get your PR...

You had a great race.  I can't believe how fast that swim was!  Oh, and BTW, YOU GOT A BIRD ON YOUR HEAD!

Sharon

We'll have to practice that PAM thing later.

Thanks! I always get like this after a race and think I should have done better. Unfortunately, we had to drive back early and I didn't have a chance to excel at the post race party!
