I take on a new "hobby" ever few years and learn all about it , and then move on. However I always circle back to woodworking when I get the itch to build. Right now I a building a 4 foot long hallway runner table. I am a little rusty, though. my tenons are a little sloppy. Training was low this week because of the table, so that must be my competing hobby, right?
LOVE building things! I built my twins a bunkbed for their birthday (5 years) this summer. It was tough to get it done, because there was only about 6 weeks between the tri I did and their birthday, and I traveled for work a lot in that time. I have realized that I hate sanding.... |

Nice to see other motorcycle enthusiasts here, and...am I the only female rider? I ride a 2007 Ducati Monster and I used to ride a 2001 Kawasaki Ninja EX250, and before that, a wee Yamaha dirt bike. I'm a female rider, and I saw at least one other in this thread. I ride a 2006 Triumph Bonneville. I grew up on the back of my Dad's Norton...I like the look of the old British bikes. Before my Bonnie I rode a Honda Rebel 250. Tiny little thing but was fantastic around town. I even rode it 900 miles across the midwest (and my butt was numb for days...).
DROOOL!!!! All this talk of Monsters, Bonnevilles and Nortons all my wife will agree to is a Vespa Love the Old school Norton Commando's! Hooray for other female riders! Vespas are sooooo cool. I would ride one around if I lived in a relatively flat urban environment. |

Super fun bike, when I'm up for a thrill I'll take it out as well, then it's back to relaxing on my cruiser. Unfortunately, with all this tri training we hardly got out on the bikes at all last summer. Every afternoon that it was nice enough to ride motorcycles I'd end up going out on the road bike instead. |

Climbinggonzo - 2011-12-29 10:56 PM Prior to triathlons and kids, I was a professional rock climber, guide and indoor gym manager and consultant. Climbing was a way of life for me and was all I did for years. What gym did you manage? I am from Minnesota and, likewise, pre kids and triathlon, was a seriously dedicated rock climber. |

Regular 126 Colorado Springs | Subject: RE: Anyone here have a bigger 'hobby/interest' than triathlon? My biggest non tri hobby is mtn biking(kind of related). Then it would have to be motorcycles, I have a Triumph Bonneville T100 and a Triumph Speed Triple. One for cruising and one for scaring the crap out of me. After my kids have graduated from college, I will get a big Harley touring bike. I grew up playing competitive tennis and golf. Arthritis in my shoulder ended tennis and I just can't find the time to golf. Whenever I'm on the golf course I look at the mountains and think I should be there instead, running or biking. |

It is pretty cool that Ford is offering the 69 mustang and bronco bodies for sale. Have always wanted to restore a 69 bronco. This makes it a little easier. |

Since this is a 'Non-Ironman Year' I will be doing more hiking and photography than training. I can easily manage HIMs and lower on just a regular daily schedule leaving plenty of weekend time to pursue the other hobbies. |

I saw someone on this thread (Chuckyhead?) is sponsored in racquetball. That was my sport prior to triathlon. I started at 14 and eventually was picked up by Ektelon then Kennex. Still have all my Kennex stuff in the closet, but don't play much. The last two places I've lived the racquetball "scene" has been dead with courts being converted to dreadful spin class rooms (which I now appreciate). Played a ton in South Carolina and was competitive at the open level as well. Also picked up squash along the way and enjoy both equally, but rarely play either. Also am an avid drummer. This stems from an early love for Rush. I played in a band in my South Carolina days many moons ago, but now the kit is relegated to the garage next to my pain cave. Wound up building my own set of electronic drums (akin to Roland set) when I started having kids so that I could play through headphones. This has worked great and saved me a ton of money. Its a great stress reliever to bang out some tunes after a tough day at the office. I play no instruments, but I commend you on your musical taste. |

Expert 1037 Portland, OR | Subject: RE: Anyone here have a bigger 'hobby/interest' than triathlon? Soccer, first and foremost, always. My only goal in coming back from the knee surgery I just had is to be able to play again. I played goalie through college, but since I've gotten into playing midfield and defense (it saves my back from all that diving). I coach whenever I get the chance, too, but I might be too intense to coach high schoolers. Photography has recently become a big hobby, but I like combining that with my other hobby of just being outside (hiking, snowshoeing, etc). Though recently I've been getting into taking family photos, and I'm thinking of building a portfolio so I can make it a side business eventually. I'm saving up for a nicer lens now. Past that, I have lots of little hobbies like reading and cross-stitching when I can. Triathlon was mostly a way of feeding my competitive spirit after my college soccer career ended. I like having a sport that gives me the ability to train alone since I've never played an individual sport, and having the variety of sports in one is nice. |

Extreme Veteran 374 Southeast Michigan | Subject: RE: Anyone here have a bigger 'hobby/interest' than triathlon? With 3 boys ages 6, 7, and 10, all of whom are involved in cub scouts and my oldest whom is very involved in sports right now (soccer and currently basketball, whose team I am the coach of) I don't have time for much other than work, spending time with my kids, training, and then squeezing in a bit of time with my wife. I do have other hobbies that I enjoy as time allows. Home brewing is one though I haven't done any in over a year. By trade I'm an IT programmer/software developer and sometimes I work on little side projects related to that just to keep my skills current and stay interested (which does not always happen on my actual job), my current one being a college basketball simulation program. |

Have a 44-year old "plastic classic" Alberg 30 cruising sailboat that I singlehandedly sailed this past summer to the southern Chesapeake Bay from New England (where I have cruised her for the last 20 years). On an even numbered year, the Newport-Bermuda Race (on a friend's boat). June 2012 is my 18th race to Bermuda. Even though my wife and kids aren't as avid about sailing and boats, the house is loaded with sailing books and maritime art that I have picked up over the years. |
