Anyone here have a bigger 'hobby/interest' than triathlon? Like other sports, art, musc, etc. Just curious.

Work and family don't count.

(I know a lot folks will take offense at calling tri a 'hobby/interest' didn't mean to disparage it in the least!)

Yes. Recently it's been ultra-long-distance swimming. It's "bigger" than triathlon in the sense that full-on it takes more training time than even IM training.

We have a diverse and accomplished group here ... will be interested to see what others' responses are.

Food and wine for me.  If I wouldn’t enjoy cooking and wine so much I don’t think I would work out as often.

Sailing, scuba diving, and kayaking.   Been know to surf some.  Long boarder.   Surfing  and diving require traveling, which I haven't done much of lately.  Cry

In terms of money, golf, hands down.  But I spend more time doing s/b/r for sure, especially since I can only golf from April - Nov here in MN.

Sailing, mountain biking, kayaking, sky diving and SCUBA diving are my other hobbies in order of how much I get to do them.

yeah, I wish...  I was a state-ranked skeet shooter a few years ago, but between more work and tri training have little time for shooting any more.

Offroading/Jeeps for me. It falls by the wayside at times, but I'm always fairly "active" as I'm one of the founders of our state's largest offroad club.

Doug,  we used to cross paths a time or two on the Trailer Sailor Forum.    I'll match my Dart 18 against your Prindle.

This year triathlon will take a back seat to backpacking.  I don't have any races scheduled for next year since I'm saving all my vacation to hike the John Muir Trail with my brothers for 3 weeks.

A couple that are bigger, motorcycles and air cooled VW's.  I have others like SCUBA and mountain biking but, they don't take up the time or money like the other two do.

Currently down to just 2 motorcycles, ' 07 Yamaha FJR and a '06 Harley Dyna, but over the past few years have had an '04 Victory Kingpin, '84 Yamaha XT600, 00 Kawi Concours and '75 CB500.  Currently down to 1 VW '73 Super, sold our '71 Bus earlier this year and last year our '63 Beetle and '64 vert Karmann Ghia went to good homes.

i'll say no. after 2 little kids, work and training, haven't found a way for anything else to fit (or maybe i don't want to). was obsessive about golf since i was 7..actually gave that up, temporarily, last year for this after 27 years. they couldn't co-exist in my world (or my wife's Wink)

I enjoy building model ships and am a voracious reader, particularly about naval history.

ive done everything so im kind of jaded with life - o i guess im fearful of taking on some hobbies because they are expensive - so i make sure my hobbies knock out 2 birds with one stone.... like food and wine -- you need to eat

I've always been into car audio, and have been competing in competitions for about 12 years. Now that I'm older I always have the disclaimer that I'm not the kid driving around at 2am in your neighborhood waking it up.

I always compare it to drag racing, my vehicles are built for one purpose, to put up a big score on the meter for 3 seconds, whereas a drag car goes fast in a straight line for a 1/4 mile, but aren't really good for much else. I can't listen to music because it was just sound bad with the tuning, and stuff would blow up.

In the last 6 years I have 7 USACi (United States Autosound Competition international) World Titles, a host of world records and I also have two national titles in the last two years in a new organzation called Midwest SPL.

These days it seems the only reason I keep goin is because I haven't lost at finals in a long time, and is the longest streak that I know of in the organizations history. I'm barley holding on though because I haven't really made any improvements in the last two years to the truck. Others are finally catching up.

Up until last year I was running equipment that was 5 years old and my nearest competitors were running the newest biggest baddes amps and subs, in 2010 I only won by .1 so last year I upgraded to what everyone else was running and my margin of victory was 1.2.

So there ya have it, just like it triathlon it doesn't always matter if you have the best equipment, it's how you use it. It always does help to have the latest stuff, but isn't always required.

I spent thousands and thousands of dollars, and invested hundreds and hundreds of hours into a sport that pays nothing other than bragging rights and a plastic trophy.

I'm much happier competing in triathlon and being MOP on a good day. I may just not do the audio stuff this fall, IMAZ training will be more important. Maybe I should go out on top, rather than my other thought of competing until I get beat.

Sorry for the book.
