I have been checking a few different sites to find tri's (sprint or oly) in Virginia and it seems there is not one comprehensive site with all available tri's. What is your favorite tri in the VA or even NC and MD area?

My favorite event in VA is Bath County:

Beautiful lake swim and the roads are closed for the bike.

Set Up events does a fantastic job with their races. I've done the Patriot sprint and HIM a few times and that is a nice race. Giant Acorn is also a nice race in the end of the season, and with a 10 am start you can drive there in the morning. They also allow same day race packet pick up which I love!! Now they also have a few MD races that look interesting.

Richmond multisport has a few good races too but not being able to do same day packet pickup(unless they have changed the policy) makes me not want to do them. I really hate driving over an hour two days in a row for a small race.

I thought RMS had same day pick-up at the Brickman Sprint in Oct. Seems like they would accommodate those from out of town.

Doing my first Set-up event in April in Lynchburg. (Angels Race)

I've rode the bike leg last weekend.

Angels is one of my favorites - there's just a super positive vibe about it.  Just be ready for the killer hill at the end of the bike and run :-

I've never had a bad experience at a Setup event.  My favorite is the Bath County tri.

They will usually make accommodations - I know there has been same day packet pickup at some of the RMS races I've volunteered at.

I've asked RMS for same day pickup a couple times (even when their page says no race-day), and they've always been accomodating. Just ask nice. :-)

I'll give another vote for Set Up, and they have a race series in all of the states the OP mentioned... bonus!  I did a couple of their races last year and have a few on the books for this year.

Setup is great.

Rumpass in Bumpass - sprint and intl. great name for a race, good location, good OWS fairly early in the year.

Culpeper, have sprint and intl. Beautiful location. can get hot, but kinda tucked away and some of the race is shaded. Lake is nice.

Giant Acorn, same exact race as Rumpass in Bumpass but at the end of the year instead of the beginning.

Love the Glen Allen Sprint- Snake pool swim, the bike course is about 50% shaded and the run is pretty good to.

Laurie Mehler does a great job of having it staffed and well supplied qwith water etc....

Met some great Bters at this event over the 3 years (not going to name them because I will forget someone and embarrass myself)

The Patriots Sprint is great (except when you swim against the current) Last year was the first year it wasn't wetsuit legal. The cops and volunteers are really great. All the compettitors are really supportive.

There is a woman who is going to be 90 years old this year competing. She is like an eel through the water (And really mean that in the nicest possible way)

If I can work up to it I want to do this as my first HIM I have heard great things about that one as well.

I am also planning on Bath county one of my friends is doing it as his first Tri this year.

Charlotesville Multisports puts on a few races--various distances.  I did the inaugural Monticelloman last year as my first Oly and it was a fantastic experience (mostly rolling bike); small and family friendly (beach entry and close playground made the wait easy for my hubby and tykes).  They are adding a half distance this year.

Love the Half Full in Maryland and now its a REV3 event!

I've done Culpeper 3 times and like it, although it can get hot.  I did the Waterman's Half in MD last year and I liked that too.  Big Lick is no more but that was one of my favorites.  Although I like the oly distance the most, the Bath County sprint has been my favorite.  Especially w/ camping at Moomaw.  It's been Setup all the way for me so far.  Maybe I need to branch out.

You like Culpeper??? You must be hardcore.  I raced the Oly for the first time last year and thought it was pretty challenging and HOT!Tongue out

I'm also a big fan of the Culpeper Sprint which I've done 3 or 4 times now, but heard the OLY was rough last year in the heat.  First year for the OLY I think.  I was planning on doing it myself until a friend wanted to do the sprint, so I signed up for that again... based on the race reports I saw, maybe a good thing.

The Culpeper Oly was indeed hot.  However, I am used to training in the heat and my finishing place was higher than normal.  I'm usually at the beach during Luray and Culpeper is a fairly easy drive for me.  Doing it this year as a relay, which I'm very excited about (wife and BIL).

i love the i

Agreed, best Richmond race

Worst:  Rocketts Landing.  the swim is okay, the bike is awesome but the run course is total suckage.  Stairs, a bridge....pure inner city lousy run that could easily be changed to be a better course.  PLUS, it was over 100 degrees the time I did it!
