Subject: Biking Sockless

I continue to brainstorm ways to shave a few seconds off my transitions...I was recently wondering...does anyone ride their bike portion 'sockless' so that they can quick transition into a pair of sockless running shoes (i.e. Zoot)?  Thoughts?  Experiences?  Good?  Bad?  Anything else?

Thanks!

Shaun

Sometimes I do. Tri shoes are made to go sockless. A number of running shoes will work sockless. More so for sprint to Olympic distance. Longer and some of the pros will start to use socks. Depends on how everything works together.

Always sock-less unless it is cold. Cycling shoes are not like running shoes. For that matter-I run sock-less for sprints up to Olympic distance. I put them on for my HIM

The only time I wear socks is if it's below about 40 degrees. IM, HIM, century rides, sockless.

Leave them in front of a box fan as soon as you get home and that's not an issue

I go sockless for sprints and olympics using just normal running shoes.  I had a small friction blister on my foot after my last olympic-distance, but otherwise have had no problems.

In a triathlon, and with almost all of my biking, I never wear socks. I never felt like I needed to.

I did an early season triathlon a few years back and the air temperature that morning was pretty brisk and cool. I put on socks in T1 and I didn't bother to dry my feet off (because, of course, that would take too long). My feet froze the entire ride from wearing cold, wet socks. In fact, ice may have even formed on them. Tongue out I was sooo happy to take off my socks when I arrived in T2.

I used to wear socks while biking and then I tried it without socks and have never gone back. I thought it would be an issue with blisters but its not. I would go sockless, IMO.

I bike sockless fine until about 70 miles, and then my shoes give me hot sports.  In shorter races, I prefer sockless because it lets my feet dry out and any dirt on my feet stays in my bike shoes.

Running, though, I just apply socks in T1.  If you roll them up like certain prophylactic devices, they are easy to roll on quickly.

I never wear socks on the bike in races. For that matter, I (almost) never wear socks when on my tri bike. I have occasionally worn my road shoes with socks on the tri bike, but now my road bike and tri bike have different pedal types and I never wear socks with the tri shoes, so....

I have found that dumping a little baby powder in cycling shoes helps when coming out of the water with damp feet.  I also put the baby powder in my running shoes as well if going sockless.  As always, try it out first before you decide to use if for races or long bike rides.

Feet are wet and (usually) sandy after the swim and so putting on socks might be counter productive for the bike.  I do wear socks when training, maintains the integrity of my shoes better than sockless.

Unless cold temps warrant it (and that in training), I haven't worn socks while riding in YEARS. Even when I was bike racing, and USCF (now USAC) rules said I was supposed to... I never got called on it. I do it for comfort, not for time savings.

x2, I did not even know it was a USCF rule-I broke that one hundreds of times I guess. I don't know about "maintaining the integrity of my shoes" that sounds strange to me. Running shoes perhaps but not cycling shoes.

Just make sure you do at least SOME of your training runs/rides without the socks first! Like most, sockless on the bike is fine for me. BUT a split second time-saving decision in my second last tri saw me ditch the socks for the run also... two HUGE blisters - one excruciating through the run.

I'm sure that the 'try it in training' goes without saying for most - but it was an in-transition decision... I'm less impaired after a bottle of rum than I am in transition. That's my defence!
