Pre-race routine:

woke up early and set up transition.
Event warmup:

did about a 2 mile easy run, and swam about 300 yards easy
Swim
  • 28m 25s
  • 2000 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a good swim. Knocked 2 minutes off last years time. Got out good, but after the first bouy I kinda got pushed out a little bit. Everything else was good.
What would you do differently?:

Don't get pushed out
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

good transition
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 2h 49m 55s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.77 mile/hr
Comments:

Had a really bike until mile 50. Was in the back of the pro mens pack who started 10 mins ahead of me. Was on track for about a 2:40 bike split. At the beginning of Nasty Grade me legs were just kinda out of it and lost a lot of time riding up that and the final 6 miles. Knocked 17 minutes off last years time.
What would you do differently?:

Just train more on the bike so I can get my legs used to going hard for that long.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

good transition but a bunch of spectators somehow got into T2 and were standing right infroent of my rack.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 1h 44m 54s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off the run with bad legs, couldnt settle into a good pace and couldnt get a good rhythm. Then at mile 7 I felt good and ran the last 6 miles in about 42 minutes. Knocked 6 minutes off last years time.
What would you do differently?:

Do more brick sessions, and more run training.
Post race
Warm down:

sat in the medical tent and ate pretzles.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

just not training for long course races, mostly just short fast paced ITU races.

Event comments:

Really good race. Terry Davis is a really good race director. Knocked over 24 minutes off last years time, won the 17-19 age group by 53 minutes as a 16 year old, and was 9 minutes off the course record set in 2000 by a 19 year old. I'll do a 4:45 next year.

Corey, you rock! I'm sure with more long course training, you can meet your goal for next year.

Were the 17-19 year olds complaining that they shouldn't have to race against the fresher, younger legs of a 16 year old?  That's not fair!  The 19 year olds prolly can't wait to move up to get out of your AG.

Just kidding.  Incredibly impressive race.  Can't wait to see you break the record next year, you're the real deal!

You oughta watch this guy run out of T2, with his folks hooting and hollering!!  Corey's got a huge cheering squad.  He was just a blur going over the timing mat.

Way to go Corey, but if you go 4:45, which I am sure you will, I won't be there to cheer you on, since I'll still be on the course

BTW, how'd your sister do?
