Subject: Chlorine stink

I love my shampoo, it keeps my hair so nice even with daily washing...but after swimming for a few weeks now, I'm finding it doesn't remove the chlorine stink. And my body wash with a loofah doesn't remove the chlorine stink from my skin (you know how if your skin gets wet a few hours later you can smell it?).

If the chlorine's not coming out of my hair, it'll be green in a few more weeks if I keep this up! Have you guys found a product that really strips it out from your hair? How about your skin? I've heard to put conditioner in my hair prior to putting on the swim cap, I may try that if no one has any specific recommendations.

Thanks!

There was a similar thread to this a couple of weeks back and I can't remember all the details of it but basically the conclusions were:

1) Wet your hair before swimming, it will absorb less chlorine this way

2) Use a specific shampoo/wash for swimmers that is supposed to counteract the chlorine effects (hopefully someone else will chime in with the product name here)

3) HTFU, the smell should be worn as a badge of honor and serve as reminder what a BAMF you are for getting out there and swimming!

Yeah, buy a "swim specific" shampoo to get most of the chemicals out.    Beyond that, embrace the smell.

There's nothing better for removing chlorine smell from your skin than going for a nice hour long run or two plus hour ride.  You'll sweat it all out.  Seriously it works.

TriSwim really helps reverse the damage and smell caused by chlorine.

Thanks. I don't mind the smell terribly, I just don't want it to eventually damage my hair or skin or do anything weird. And I don't like the smell nearly as much 4 hours later as I like the smell of chlorine in the air when I enter the pool....now that I like.

Thought I was weird because I love the smell.....it soaks into my road id and I can smell it all day...after a shower.  Guess it reminds me of being a kid and smelling like a pool all summer long.

I like to kid myself by saying that part of what I'm smelling is just all the pool water that got up my nose and it's not really ME that smells, just my sniffer that's damaged.

BUT... apparently my fiance was quite the... er... man about town... during his high school diving days, so those deer pee perfumes they sell in the back of the ladies' magazines have nothing on chlorine smell for him.

Now that were on topic about chlorine, how do you guys get your back less dry? Seems the more I swim in the pools my skin gets irritated after about a mile of swimming and my back is real dry.

I love it when I get a whiff of chlorine in the late afternoon. I also use shampoo and soap but apparently it's not totally working but I'm ok with that.

Stop drinking so much of the pool water.

I always make sure that my cologne mixes well with chlorine, because so much of it soaks into my skin...

SBR Sports' TriSwim Shampoo, conditioner and body wash really work wonders. Wife threw down the gauntlet a few years back and this stuff saved the day for me!

SO HTFU then use TriSwim!

thanks for the TriSwim recommendation - the stuff I use doesn't really mask the stink so I'll give these a try.  Not available here in Aus but they are in the UK where luckily I'm off to in a few weeks

Yep, my boyfriend call it "Triathlete Perfume."

Of course, he's a crazy XTerra-racing triathlete himself. *G*

I just came across this product. I've never tried it. Has anyone else.

Of course I just got a whiff of chlorine from this morning and I'm enjoying it.

Ha, love the swim cap! Thanks for the recommendation. Sounds like good stuff. I do like the chlorine smell...but only in the air, while I'm there at the pool. I'm just not big on aftertaste. Er, aftersmell.

A ha ha ha ha, YES!

Surprisingly, my hair is in great shape even swimming several times a week. Wet it before you get in the pool, condition afterward, and only shampoo every few days -- it's what works for me. As far as the skin smell, well, I could (and often do) smell worse, so I don't really worry about that.

I found the best routine and product a few years back.  Before going in the pool, hit the shower and soak your hair (as mentioned before).  The more tap water your hair has absorbed, the less pool water it will absorb.  Then, apply a regular old conditioner and leave it in.  It's like a protective layer on the hair.  Put your cap on before you enter the pool.

After swimming, I use Aveda sun care hair and body shampoo.  It removes chlorine and salt and you can use it all over before your regular shampoo.  It works like a charm:
