As mentioned in the article, we never see him being charged, so I assume he's got some kind of energy-producing reactor. Battery power seems pretty low-tech compared to the rest of the droid.

I think they generate their own power from all the magnetic/electrical fields around them.

Think of the amount of energy required to transport an X-Wing fighter at light speed and then participate in a full blown battle at attack speeds - not to mention the ability to generate a seemingly endless supply of laser fire.  Relative to C-3PO, an X-Wing fighter isn't really that large.  So, the fact that C-3PO seems to operate indefinitely on a very small power source, considering the amount of energy required, isn't that surprising.

Don't we see Luke charging R2 in the swamps of Dagobah (ESB)?

Yeah... on the subject of never ending power supplies.....with as much power as is apparent in the movie, why not have a X wing that emits one long continuous blast of laser material?  Just point to where there bad guys are and smear it around.

Have you ever noticed it looks liek the X wing generates it own gravity field for the pilot?  Why the gravity science in the future is so simple they don't even need a BS explanation for it....it's just always on......you know like the lights.

Where do all those errant laser pulses go anyway?

Tantooine...sand...golden robot woth open sides that make his lower half a giant sugar scoop filled with a spaghetti plate of wires??????  Nah no problems could come from that poor design.

That would be ridiculous.

That's a very personal question, and besides, size doesn't matter.

Same reason that there's no MP2 music format, duh.

And to the OP - if you have to ask...

for the same reason pulsed lasers are used today.  Pulsing the laser increases the power per pulse without increasing the total power consumption of the laser.  However, the term laser cannon is a misnomer, as it did not fire laser energy at all.  The bolts were coherent pulses of high energy plasma, which is why you could see them traveling through space.  A true laser weapon would be invisible.

There are explanations.  Look up repulsorlift devices, inertial compensators and gravity-wells.

The pulses are plasma, so they will eventually cool and dissipate or hit something else.

C-3PO was a protocol droid.  They were primarily designed to serve diplomatic roles where living conditions weren't so harsh.

Well, yes and no.  That might have been their original design, but he WAS built on Tattooine by Anakin.  So some sand guards probably would have been in order.

Do we have to stop talking about Star Wars now that May the 4th is over?

Anakin didn't build him from the ground up.  He was in service in another system for quite a while before being severely damaged and discarded on Tattooine.  Anakin restored him to service using parts he scrounged up.  I suspect he wasn't modified for the environment because he was being built by a 10 year old.

Point well taken, but considering the enormous quantity that are used with minimal explanation of the power source, is it safe to assume that a powersource so extraordinary could run a cooling system, or considering or the wicked cold space could act as a heat sink.

I get what you are saying...but have you ever noticed how even the lights can flick on and off, warp drives cut out, tractor beams can be turned off, but the gravity never falters.  Think about how inneffective  a death star would be if you could disable the gravity, or worse turn it up to 11.  Although there might be explanations, I can't think of a movie where the gravity issue simply wasn't just glossed over.  Everything else has a system that gets talked about, tampered with tinkered with rigged together with chewing gum and bailing wire.  Gravity.  Never fails.  What a wasted plot device.

There's a moment in the first SW movie when Luke and the droids are at Obi-Wan's house when C-3PO shuts himself off voluntarily. Of course, the real reason is so that the actor doesn't have to sit there in the uncomfortable costume during a long scene when he doesn't have any lines, but the implication, I guess, was that he did so to save his batteries.

There was a B cell many years ago.  It fell out of fashion however.

There is no MP2 MUSIC format because MP3 is actually MPEG-1, Layer 3.  Layer 2 - i.e. MP2 was a video codec .  But Layer 2 can be used to compress audio too, then it's just called an mpeg.
