Helmet vs No Helmet

People can ride motorcycles without helmets here in TX too. I get angry when I see this. Its so stupid. Especially after seeing a motorcycle accident last year, thankfully the guy had on a helmet.

On my ride at lunch was passed by "Mr. No Helmut w/ Earphone"   NICE!!!

What gets me is the people who are without a lid and the RUN A RED!

Dumbasses (the non-helmet folk). The thing is in Ontario (not sure of policies in other provinces) is that we have a (n almost) free healthcare system. The resources used to help this guy could have gone towards a real problem.

Don't worry about it, its just what Jim the people who have nothing else to do chose to argue about that day.

I just threw out my old helmet which was completely destroyed from a spill I took mountain biking five years ago.  Seeing it again, reminded me why I wear my helmet everywhere I ride, even if its just to the store and back. 

Can someone please explain to me why in some states its not a LAW to wear your helmet on a motorcycle?  And what I don't really get is that PA passes it as a  law, but then they overturn it and now its legal again to not wear a helmet?  Isn't that going backwards?  I don't own a motorcycle but I've ridden enough to know, one spill without a helmet and i'm done.

This isn't really a 'helmet v no helmet' question, but at what point should your helmet be replaced?

A friend was having her helmet checked for a race and they noticed some scratches and asked her to explain what happened.  She fell over trying to unclip at a stop sign.  They thought about it and almost made her buy a new helmet.  They said that helmets are like airbags and once impacted, they need to be replaced.

Anyone have decent guidelines as to when a helmet should be replaced?

Replace after any impact or after 5 years. Apparently the glues used can degrade and the impact resistance of the helmet can be greatly affected.

I had a buddy who rolled his Corvette while not wearing a seat belt when we were about 20 years old. He was head injured and lost 30-40 points off his IQ. He went from a normal, bright guy to someone who requires supervision with daily activities like learning a bus route, or making a meal more complicated than a bowl of cereal.

That assistance has been provided by his parents and other family members. His decision not to wear a seat belt sentenced his family to decades of heartbreak and caring for a perpetual 10 year old who doesn't show happines or affection.

I'll wear a helmet, thank you.

it is funny to open a thread about something serious and it opens to the bottom post referencing go go dancers....

 yeah - the parents not wearing helmets but the kids having to - that is one of those uphill do what I say not what I do things that just does not work....

But seriously - why miss out on an opertunity to accessorize!  My bike helmet is pink paisley.  My scooter helmet is chrome gold!

Yeah, it really bugs me to see a family out riding and the kids have their legally-required helmets, and the parents don't.  Now, I'm sure there are folks who'll say, "We're not really going fast enough to get hurt."  Yeah, but that car over there is. 

What about the kids who have their helmet on, but not buckled?  Like, just before the impact, they'll reach up and fasten it on?

Or the triathletes I see on group rides (passing me) who have their helmets on their aerobars?  WTF? 

I see a lot of riders (probably commuters) around town doing this:  riding the wrong way in a bike lane, in dark clothing at dusk, sans helmet.  Argggg!
