Completely different race experience from a tri or a run, but it really does feel good to finish one of these.

Thats exactly why I'm doing this - for the experience, for the challenge of finishing. I'm not really racing, I'm simply swimming. I expect to finish in 1:30-1:40, hopefully thats a good enough time to not be last place!

I'm pretty stoked, though. This is gonna be cool!

I did a couple of Open Water Swim Races in Melbourne's summer - I did a 1.4km and a 1.5km - what a blast!  So nice to get out of the water and that's it, no need to run off to transition, no need to focus on what's next!

I'm pretty much at the back of the MOP in triathlon swims, in these OWS races - BOP if not last!  Real swimmers are in abundance and are amazing to watch!

Certainly signing up for a couple next summer too.  have fun.

I'd never even heard of a 5k swim until I started visiting this site... now, it's something I want to do.

I have to know, though.... do they generally allow wetsuits for these, or are they pretty steadfast on not allowing them?

I'm sure there will be a wetsuit division. I wont wear one.

Generally speaking, the people that do the longer open water distances don't want to wear wetsuits...ruins the fun.

You'll love it. It's not a tri, but its still a race. You'll love the feeling of running out of the water when it's over. My recommendation would be to feel comfortable and then the race would be second nature!Kick butt!

I signed up for one on June 30th. Hope I can get over this cold soon so I can get some training in.

At least you're in relatively still waters. Mine is in the ocean. Yesterday, the rip current was ripping. I told the guards I had to get some training in it and they said "if you're doing a 5K swim, we trust that you know what you're doing out there."

On wet suits. It depends on water temp. Temps in FL are 80s so no wet suit division. But the winter events I've seen have a wetsuit division.

This is pretty much how I feel about it. I'm guessing the majority of the other swimmers will be of a similar mindset. Theres a whole 'purist' culture when it comes to distance swimmers - wetsuits are like training wheels.

I've never been much for being a purist at anything, I prefer to rock the boat

Training wheels is where I'm at with my long distance swimming, anyway, so that suits me well

Having been to only one 5k OWS, I saw the majority wearing wetsuits. Perhaps those were all the triathletes, and the "real" swimmers were the ones without. FWIW, I wore mine, and it was a mistake. It was still too tight, and I couldn't breathe, and DNFed. This year is another story though. I am signing up for another one in August, and may or may not do a wetsuit.

I dont even own a wetsuit, so I've always just gone without one. I've never felt like I needed one for any reason so I've never bothered to get one. Its working out fine for me, but if someone wants to wear one I dont think any less of them. At some point in my life I want to do the Escape From Alcatraz race. I hear that water is pretty darn cold, so I imagine I'd wear a wetsuit for that event.  I guess that means I'm not a purist either. I think of a wetsuit like a jacket - I will wear one if its cold enough, but you certainly wont catch me wearing one out today. I dont wear jackets to go faster.

You won't even be close to last.  I'd say you would be well up in the front, but this being the National Championship there should be some ridiculously fast people there.

I did a 3 miler back in 2009. It was fun. But I realized that 3 miles is probably my limit due to boredom with swimming that long. Ha!

Also, many of the longer open water swim races use "channel rules" which specifically state no wetsuits.

I'll be wearing my "training wheel" wetsuit at my 10K swim this summer in So Cal.  Same as I did last year for the 4.8 miler.

I cringe thinking about how chafed that will make you....
