How are you fitting in a midweek 35-40 mile bike ride in the morning? I'm not a slow cyclist, but I can't put up 20mph average speed for 2 hours while maintaining a zone2-zone3 HR throughout the entire ride.

What time are you waking up to fit it in and what time are you leaving for work?

I did all my rides after work and ran before work.  Easier to fit a 1 hour run in the morning, and a 2 hour bike after work for me.  I agree that I would never be able to get up early enough to fit in a 2 hour workout before work.

I do my long rides on my days off. In workdays if I an doing a bike workout I usually get on the trainer. I just find it more efficient at times.

Agree with previous posters...I do runs in the am, bikes in the pm and on the trainer during the week. It's how I can work full time, raise a family and keep most everyone happy.

I'm not training for a HIM, but I am training for a couple of tri's and a few centuries so I have a similar issue.  Like others have said I try to get my long rides in on the weekend, but I also commute by bike to work relatively reguraly, so if I am commuting I can save myself 45-60 min and am able to fit the ride in because I don't waste anytime in the morning sitting in my car.

5 days a week, my AM workout is an hour ride (18-20ish). All rides longer than that are done after work and on the weekends. I typically will do an hour in the AM on the trainer, and then if I am riding again, either an hour on the roads at night or 1-2 hours on the MTB. 1.5-4 hours on Sundays.

I have to get up at 3am to fit in an hour workout.  I keep morning workouts to that unless it's a weekend.  It's not easy after work, but usually, I get it done.

All my workouts are based off time. 1:00-1:30 hour rides during the week.  2:00-2:30 on the weekends.  :30-1:30 hour runs during the week and weekends. Swims :45-1:00 during the week and weekends. I train at 5:00am.

I'm a run AM, ride PM kinda guy like many of the others.  Usually its only one night a week that I've got a "medium" ride of 30-40 miles, so I just kinda know that that day is gonna be shot.  I try to sneek out of work a half hour early just so I can keep the daylight on the ride.

Side note, last night was my planned 40 mile PM ride.  Didn't go quite as planned, see my "what a crappy ride" post for details!

I do threshold work in the early mornings on my trainer.  Get up around 4:50...spinning by 5am.  I was doing 3 workouts a week like this but changed my plan around slightly now that the weather is better and I can get much longer weekend rides in.  Tuesday mornings I still do a trainer session that will looks like this:

WU-15 easy

MS- 5 x 5 minutes @LT, 5 mins easy between sets

CD-10 or so.

Another one in the rotation (taken from Triathlete mag a few months ago)

WU-15

MS-15 x 1 min pretty much all-out, 30 rest between sets, followed by 10 minutes @ race pace

CD-10

These early weekday morning trainer sessions have improved my overall bike strength immensely.

I do half distance bike commutes. The full distance is 60 miles so I will park either 25 or 32 miles from Home Monday night and ride home, and ride back Tuesday AM, then repeat on Wednesday night, ride back Thursday AM. Tues/Thu nights get swims. some mornings I let my wife bring me in to my car. I can get 62 to 120 miles a week just doing this, then a long ride on the weekend. One of those nights will get a brick run. I can usually get a lunch time run at work and I swim Tuesday nite and Thu nite. My work hours are 11am to 8pm so my evening rides during the summer end in darkness. The AM ride is typically into the wind and along a lonely stretch of highway frontage road so I can do some sustained 4x10 or 2x20 type intervals. Nights just get a cruise or steady temp type effort.

With a 3-month-old in the house, my training schedule has had some major changes.  My weekday morning workouts start between 4:30 and 5:00, but usually max out at 90 minutes.  Swim workouts are done over lunch.  Now that The Kiddo is old enough, I'm able to do at least one evening run during the week with her in the stroller, plus the long Z1-Z2 run over the weekend.

The hardest part is getting in that long ride.  I can usually squeeze it in during the day on Sunday, but if the kid demands extra attention, I've been known to do it on the trainer between 8pm and midnight.  Fortunately Monday is my rest day, so the late night ride doesn't nuke any other training days.

If you cannot fit in 35-40 mile bike rides in the morning then focus on the quality of the workout.  I do all of my weekly riding in the morning on the trainer.  As I got closer to my target HIM race I would ride 1.5 hours with the bulk of that above 85%FTP.  I get up at 5:00 am, ride 1.5 hrs, out the door by 7.  Have everything prepared before you go to bed so you can jump on and go.

FWIW I did not ride more than 2.5 hours in prep for my HIM.  95% of my rides were on the trainer and the focus was on quality because I do not have alot of time.  I was prepared...it can be done.

Like most I get the longer rides in on the weekends.  But if it's a weekday I will be up at 4:30 and on the road by 5.  Unfortunatley I can only safely stay on the roads until about 6:30 and then traffic is out of control plus then I can still get out the door for work by 8.  Tough for me to think about a long pm ride (after 5) simply because of traffic where I live.  I do occassionally take a few hours off work to do an afternoon ride if the schedule requires it.   Every year it seems the cars get less and less aware of the bicyclists.  Hope this helps!

When training for a HIM (or any other distance, really), I don't do midweek 35-40 mile rides.  And I don't do them in z2-3 throughout the entire ride even when I do.  Like many others, I do 1 or 2 weekday rides on the trainer--no more than 1-1/2 hrs (usually less)--with lots of threshold and above-threshold intervals.  I ride longer twice on the weekend.  The bigger challenge is getting up early enough for 2hr weekday morning runs, when needed.  Those have to start ~4:30am.

my midweek rides are trainer rides at or above threshold, or with an aggressive group of roadies that want a 1.5 hour hammer fest to start the day.

i save the long endurance ride for the weekends.
