Subject: Participation down?

Hey guys. I've been out of the sport for a couple years. Looking to get back in. I was looking at the remaining scedule for 2012 (NCTS).  The numbers are wat down compare to where they were a couple years ago. What's up? The economy? More races to choose from? Popularity of the sport waning?  Just curious? Wilmington used to fill up a few months out. Now, there are only 100 people signed up.  Weird.

Price of travel and cost of races have gone up. I know thats why I do not do many sprints.

It's hard to justify paying $75 for a sprint to race for about an hour.

Lately I have been doing most of my competing on Strava.com ... it's free.

A sprint use to cost $40 to $45 but now $60 to $75 but it happening everywhere I mean ironman race 140.6 was $500 to $580 now its in $650 range and more if the race is popular

I think all of the above. I would happily do Triangle next weekend but really don't feel like spending $70 for, as someone said, a little more than an hour of racing. I think everything is more diluted now versus a few years ago where there were only a handful of sprints in the triangle area. Now there is an FSSERIES sprint every other weekend and a SETUP sprint every month (or more). Gets expensive quickly.

Having another race company along with rising prices may have hurt demand for some of the traditionally larger races. I signed up for Wilminton YMCA Sprint and realized it's the 1st setup race I've done since 2010. I decided it was worth it for the swim and the overall experience in Wrightsville Beach. But I was also counting on it being a big race, so I hope registration picks up.

I'm doing Buckhorn (FS), Mayo Lake (FS), and then Wilmington. The FS races are less expensive and closer to home, but they're usually smaller, especially compared to Wilmington. I think I saw some discounted entries for Buckhorn on MyTrainLocal, not sure if it was just for IOSDT members.

Welcome back! Unless you're as fast as you were before. Cool

When I did IM FL back in 2006 it cost me around $425. Now it's $600- HUGE difference.  On top of increased registration fees, high gas prices, and a zillion of races to choose from, it seems like a lot of races aren't filling up as fast as they used to.  Which to me I kinda like, knowing that I don't have to register asap.

I don't race nearly as much as I used to back in 2005 and 2006.  When I first started I was racing at least once a month if not more.  Now that I've "been there, done that" I only pick a few races a year to do and train up for them instead of just racing to maintain my training.  Also my priorities have changed where I'd rather save my money than pay for races.

That's just me though.
