Subject: Anyone Have Aero Bars on Their Road Bike?
I'm thinking of getting aero bars on my road bike, and I've read up on it and I know it's not the best situation since road bikes aren't designed like a tri bike, but I'd like to try it. First, I'd like some more aerodynamic speed, of course. Second, I have a feeling it will help my lower back by keeping me from sitting upright and resting on butt too much. I'd be getting them from a local tri store that would do a fit for me once I got them. Anyone have them on their road bike and think they work well?

I put some on my road bike and like using them. Also made the transition easier when I got a tri bike.

Yep, I have them and it helps...should make you a little faster when riding in that position.

It's not ideal because you won't have gearing out on the bars and like you said, the bike was not really intended for that use.  But with the fitting that the tri store will give you, I don't think you'll regret the decision.

Made the transition from one to the other pretty easy.

That's a good idea, I hadn't even considered that they would save my arms after a swim.

Got clip-ons on mine.

Love the aero postion, feels more relaxed.

Also I like my aero-drink bottle there, easier then fiddling with a normal cage.

Further I missed aero bars on my last tri as a place to nice lay-out helment and glasses

When riding on the trainer it is super nice to lay down on the bars and keep your hand free to play video games!

I got mine used in this forum.

Roadie with clip-ons is the only bike i have.  I've done everything from a sprint to HIM...great set-up if you are on a budget.

I just took my clip-on's off for my race this weekend.  I never did get professionally fitted with them so maybe that is why I feel I don't benefit as much. Over the last few months I have constantly tweaked my seat, handle bars, clip-on's and even the stem. Yes I felt more comfortable on the 60+ km rides but I never had an increase in speed unless I was heading into a 40km/h wind! I think for me I will leave them off for the sprints and olympic's. And one day if I make the jump to a 70.3 or more I will then purchase a full on tri bike.

Been riding with clip ons for five years, two irons, several olympics etc. Love them.

I've been thinking about doing this to my CAAD9.  I don't know why but this year I feel as though the drops/hoods and the whole bar itself has gotten farther away from me.  I haven't changed anything with my seat and I'm fairly certain I have not shrunk.

If I added clip ons to my current set up I think I'd be too streched out.  Anyone feel like that before they put clip ons on?

Lots of folks do this. I have recently and it has really improved my speed and comfort.  Get fit at you LBS and they can help put them on, check angles etc. I have a Felt 95 road. Put Profile Design aeros on, moved saddle forward slightly and for me, slight tilt down- in other words, moving forward some. Had it fit and can comfortably get down in aeors (been practicing this on trainer) and have gotten comfortable. I also notice working different muscles in aero. I feel like i have more power in aero.  Again, in perfect world, we'd all get 5K versions of both kinds of bikes, but for now, this is very workable solution.

yeah- got a set on my Orbea.  They definitely help a little and are worth the $50-$100 for some cheap speed.  Plus- if you have aerobars, you are then permitted to wear an aero helmet.  Between those two inexpensive items, you're 2/3rds of the way to having a proper TT bike.

that said- you just can't get into the right position on a roadie with aero bars.

I've left the bars on my roadie, as when my bike's on the trainer, they provide a great spot to hold my laptop while I'm doing trainerRoad workouts.

I have raced with such a setup for a few years now and generally speaking I am the fastest local person on a non tri bike.  You will likely need to lower your seat a bit and move it quite far forward. It also will require you being comfortable and steady while riding your bike.

That being said, your back shouldn't hurt from normal riding or your fit is already in correct.  In fact you should be just as comfy without them while on the bikes drops.

It took a while for my back to adjust to the road bike. I had been on a hybrid for 7 years and thought once I got the roadie I would be riding for miles on end with no problem. Nope. First I had trouble with my hands falling asleep or going numb then I had a lot of discomfort in my lower back.

Just took some time to adjust, time in the saddle and to dial in my fit.

I just added them to my road bike 2 weeks ago. I picked up the PD T3+ on amazon for $80. Definitely faster and definitely more comfortable. The setup took agile to dial in and I think it's important to get it right.

Clip-ons are perhaps most bang for your buck when trying to buy speed on the bike.  From following well-done test, clip-on bars gain you about half of total aero difference between std road bike & full TT (tri) rig (inc bike/wheels/aero helmet).

And the added arm position is more comfortable for distance riding once you get used to it.

My whole first year in tri was with a Scott road bike.  Bought aero bars to add on.  Thought it was well worth the $100.  My 2 cents.

Have PD Jammer GT on mine.  Love them!!!  Don't like riding in the traditional position any more.  Nothing better than getting on the bars and hammering.

Love my clip ons.  Got them from a club member for a case of Guinness (Sp).  I have wrist problems due to the Arthur brothers, (you know arthur and ritis), and they give me another position to move to.

Been using clip-ons now for 2 years.  Had the LBS fit them, money well spent.
