Subject: Oly on Sunday, Skip Sat 43 mile ride?

I have been training for HIM in early September.  Tomorrow my training plan has a 43 mile bike ride.  On Sunday I have an Olympic race, that I am going to do instead of my 11 mile run.   I didn't do any tapering this week for race.  I am thinking that I should either take Saturday off, and let my legs relax a bit, or only do a 20 mile ride.  Or should I just get out there and do the 40 miles?  What would you do?

I would take Saturday off and focus on your race.  The oly race is good preparation for your HIM, and will allow you to test your fitness and logictics/transitions for your upcoming HIM race.

Good luck.

I'll usually take a day off before a non-priority race. It's not a taper by any stretch but I just feel better.

It really depends on how you're feeling and how well you want to do at that race. Most people do well with a day off, or some very light activity.

I'm planning on an Oly this Sunday too, and plan to ride at least that tomorrow, but my training volume is high. The Oly is because it's a fun event and I want to challenge myself. I'll get through it fine and should have a strong time, just not optimized.

IMO, I would take the day off and pound out the Oly.

It really depends on how important this race is for you... B race, then take Sat off, C race, then just ahead on do what you feel like, if that's the bike ride, then ok, if that's a day off, then that's ok as well

This is how I would approach it as well.

I'd go ride.  Depending how I felt that day, I would either do the whole distance planned or cut it back.  I wouldn't go too easy on the ride, but I wouldn't push the effort all that much either.  Save that for the race.

On the ride tomorrow, I'll likely be up and down with pacing. I'll want the harder parts to help stay sharp for the next day, but not so much of it that I'm worn out. Going the middle route throughout tends to leave me feeling a bit flat for a race. Like I'm missing that extra gear.

X3.  If you've got any kind of time-related goal for the race, then take Saturday off for rest.  If you're just looking at the race as a fun, catered training day, then an easy 43 miles shouldn't kill your chances of finishing.

I say don't ride on Saturday and take it as an opportunity to practice what you will do the day before your HIM. Getting your gear ready, eating, resting, preparing nutrition, etc.

The Olympic race will account for the missed training on Saturday. The distances are shorter but the intensity will be higher equating to a similar training effect. Consider the race training for the HIM. Focus on your transitions, taking nutrition on the bike and pushing when you're tired.

Good luck and have FUN!!!

Thanks for all the input!

I think tomorrow I will relax, get some extra sleep and stretch.  I'll get all my gear together and go through my nutrition plan.

Then Sunday ATTACK the OLY!!

Going to buck the trend here a little.  If there is any day I'm going to take off before a race, it's TWO days before.  I always try to do something the day before a race unless I'm feeling totally run down for some reason.

Normally before an Oly, I'll ride about 25-30 miles...sometimes up to 45.  I've also ridden up to 85 miles the day before an Oly that I didn't care too much about and did surprisingly well.

If you feel the need for a workout -- what about a short swim?

I would take the day off Saturday, then hammer out the Olympic Sunday. However, I have been known to finish up the long bike after the race. So, after the race I would probably try to ride about 20 more so you get the total mileage for the long bike in.
