Subject: BT doesn't like Chrome (or vice versa?)

For the last few months I've been using Chrome (on Win7) as my primary browser.  I get a ton of timeout errors when browsing on BT and only on BT.  I will be browsing through a multi page thread and then all of a sudden it won't bring up a page and I have to reload the page several times before it comes back. While this is happening I can't get to any page on BT but can browse to other websites without issue.  It happens on my laptop at home and my desktop at work.  At first I thought you guys may have been having server problems but then one day while it was happening I fired up Firefox and it loaded right away even though Chrome still wouldn't load the same page so obviously not a server problem.

Any ideas what it might be or what I can do about it?

Interesting.

I have the same problems with Chrome on BT.  I had always assumed it was due to bad servers on BT's end.

If it helps, this is what I get.

This web page is not available

Google Chrome could not load the web page because www.beginnertriathlete.com took too long to respond. The website may be down or you may be experiencing issues with your Internet connection.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Reload this web page later.
  • Check your Internet connection. Reboot any routers, modems or other network devices that you may be using.
  • Add Google Chrome as a permitted programme in your firewall or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted programme, try deleting it from the list of permitted programmes and adding it again.
  • If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure that the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, adjust your proxy settings: Go to the spanner menu > Settings > + Show advanced settings > Change proxy settings... > LAN Settings and deselect the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" checkbox.
Error 7 (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out.

I have been using Chrome on a Mac and Chrome on a windows xp machine, no problems.

Can you both start listing the URLS that timeout?  Let's see if we can find a pattern.

I can do that but I haven't noticed any patterns.  It has happened to me when just browsing posts, when replying to a post, in the training log, just about anywhere.  It seems that when it happens, the entire site isn't accessible for a short time.

It happened to me again this morning (7:55am Atlantic Time if that matters).  I was refreshing the Tri Talk forum and got the error.  I quickly tried going to my training log and the main page which also failed.  Also tried refreshing a mentor group thread and it failed.  I reloaded a few times and as soon as it worked, the other pages also worked.

Interestingly, when I tried to submit this post it also failed and I couldn't reload a mentor thread.  I then tried going to beginnertriathlete.com (without the www) and it worked while the www ones wouldn't.

I'll post the error next time it happens, but the screen I get is essentially the same as the one below from axteraa.

I use Chrome and the only issue I have/had was uploading a single workout back before the "upload" section/module was released. Since then I just use that with no issues at all, either here or on the work machine.

I constantly get time outs using Chrome on Win7 64b also, but don't have any problems with other sites, forums I visit.  It's rather annoying actually.

Our logs show some errors on huge threads of 100 pages and more. Is anyone experiencing this with shorter threads?

I've had it happen in my training log as well as when replying to a post in Tri Talk (including very short threads).

I've experienced sporadic problems loading my training log on Chrome.

Sometimes, it's fine. Sometimes, it takes a long time for the page to load. And sometimes, only half the page loads. (I can see just one window's worth, but I can't scroll down.)

The rest of the site loads fine. It's only my logs that are an issue.

I'm using Chrome 21.0.1180.89 m. Operating system is Windows Vista (32 bit home version)

I have no problem when I use either Firefox or IE. It's just on Chrome that I have problems.

(ETA: This has only been happening recently. I didn't experience any issues until recently.)

Just an FYI - for me it seems to be getting worse by the day.  Every time I come into the forums I get the problem at least 3-4 times.  Sometimes it's just trying to open a thread, sometimes it's trying to reply to a post.  Time of day doesn't seem to matter either.

Just a heads up, we are looking into this. I use Chrome quite a bit and haven't seen anything personally but we're going through our logs to see if we can figure out what's causing what you're seeing.

Also want to add that I don't think it's computer or even network specific as it does it at home and at work.  Two different PCs and to entirely different internet/network providers.

I'm also starting to use Firefox just to come on this site to avoid the frustration. Wink

Bringing this back to the top.  If anything, it's getting worse.

Are you getting any error messages from the browser?

One possibility is Flash, that is what the mini-graphs in the log are created with. Some of the ads on the site also use Flash. Here's a good description of that problem and how to fix it.

Just the error I posted earlier in the thread.  It is always the exact same one and I've never seen a plugin error (except when Garmin Communicator locks up occasionally).

I can work around it to a point.  If I get the error, I go up to the URL and remove the www. and hit enter and the page will load without problems.  After a few minutes, I can go add the www. back and all is good.

I wasn't getting any flash crashes, but I did follow the suggestion in that link.  I'll let you know if things get better.

Still happens even after I did the flash fix above.  I'm typing from Firefox now out of frustration.

Just a shot in the dark here but try turning off the prerendering option.  Do the following:

  1. Click the icon on far right of address bar
  2. Click "Settings"
  3. Scroll down and click "Show advanced settings..."
  4. Uncheck "Predict network actions to improve page load performance"
