Pre-race routine:

My goal for this race is to have fun! I’d like to see my swim improve from 2010 but with the tides, etc. that may be difficult to measure. I’d be delighted with a sub 30 minute swim (assuming no wetsuit). It was not wetsuit legal in 2010 when I did this race but it was in 2009 and 2011.

We drove to Wilmington on Friday and did packet pickup. Had a pre-race meal at Mellow Mushroom.

On Saturday, I got up at 5:15 am. I had an English muffin with peanut butter on it and a banana. I also had a water bottle of Camelbak Elixir. Kevin walked the Emma while I was getting dressed. Then he dropped me off near the transition area and went back to the hotel to have his breakfast, etc.
Event warmup:

I set up my transition area at the Wrighsville Beach town hall and walked the half mile to the swim start in front of Blockade Runner. Once I got there, I ran a little bit, did my dynamic stretches and ran back. It was about 63 degrees out when the first swimmer hit the water (water temperature officially 79 degrees). The air temperature was in the low/mid 70s when the event finished.

Note: The event provides buses from transition to swim start, I just chose to walk. They also provide gear transportation from swim start back to transition. I used this to send my shoes and t-shirt back.
Swim
  • 32m 10s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim went well - felt much more confident without the wetsuit. The swim is affected by the tide. While my time was not significantly better than the last time I did this event, my placement went from back of the pack (56 of 61) to middle of the pack and that is a good thing!
What would you do differently?:

Continue to work on swimming
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

If I did a lot of sprints, I'd start to run and ride without socks. Since I'm more active in the endurance side of triathlon, I take a the socks putting on penalty here.
Bike
  • 35m 1s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 21.42 mile/hr
Comments:

My number came off during the bike. I didn't know what to do - try to fix or jam in pocket? Fixed it and that cost me some time. If I had jammed it in my pocket or bento box, would that have been a DQ or penalty?

They said it was 12.5 miles) but it seemed shorter that it's shorter than that. I forgot to turn on the Garmin at the beginning of the bike so I missed a chunk of the course on that.
What would you do differently?:

Find out what to do if your number comes off your bike.

Also, review the rule on drafting/passing cars.

Continue to bike more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Run
  • 25m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm pleased with the run. This was actually my biggest area of improvement from my previous sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. The sky was overcast during the run and that was very helpful.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to run more.
Post race
Warm down:

This was about a three and a half minute improvement from my 2010 time in this event.

Event comments:

I enjoy events run by Setup Events. They do a nice job. The volunteers for both this event and Beach2Battleship, also sponsored/hosted by the Wilmington YMCA, are really awesome. Not only are they very competent at what they do, they are pleasant and genuinely enthusiastic cheerleaders. That makes the event so much better for the athletes!

Janyne, great job. Improvement from the last time you did this race is cool. Both the swim and the run took steps forward, WOW. And it looks like you really had an enjoyable race. How can you beat that?

VERY nice job, Janyne!!  Congrats on improving your swim and busting out a great run.  I'm a little curious what you meant by 'review the rule on drafting/passing cars'.  I absolutely love the picture of you and Emma, and Emma on the beach.  Dogs are wonderful, aren't they?   Cool pic of you on the bike, too.

melbo55 - 2012-09-24 1:40 PM I'm a little curious what you meant by 'review the rule on drafting/passing cars'.

The course was very crowded with 1200 athletes and a 12 mile bike course.  There was a situation where there was a slow cyclist, a car refusing to pass and then me.  I hung back so as not to "draft" the car.  A cyclist went to pass both me and the car on the left.  There was no center line painted on the road but he was clearly going across the center.

USAT rule:  "...no participant shall permit his drafting zone to intersect with or remain intersected with the drafting zone of another cyclist or that of a motor vehicle. With respect to a motor vehicle (including authorized race vehicles); it is the athlete’s responsibility to move out of the vehicle’s drafting zone or to continually communicate to the vehicle to move away."

Further down the rules state:  "All passing is to be done to the left of the cyclist being overtaken unless otherwise specified. "

If it's a car, I assumed that we were screwed, correct?

If there is a shoulder or bike lane, can the car be overtaken on the right since it is in a separate lane?

Regarding the number on the bike:  "Race Numbers. Participants shall plainly display their race numbers at all times, and shall maintain the race number in an unaltered, unobstructed and readable state at the start and finish gates, in the transition areas, and on the course. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty."  Since I was body marked and had a number on my helmet, could I have jammed the flyaway bike number in my rear pocket and raced?  Yeah, it was my own fault for not having duct tape on me.  Did I do the right thing trying to fix it?  Not sure that it was "clearly visible" jammed on under my bento box though.  :-/

Nice job and congrats on the PR!

That is a long swim for a sprint! Glad you got the bike number (I hate those things) handled.

Looks like an enjoyable race all-around!

Congrats!

Great race! You hit the goals I was trying to hit. I've run into that drafting problem in several sprints. I guess you could keep yelling for them to go and that allows you to stay there? I'm certain you could pass a car on the right with a bike lane, but it gets real sketchy in a normal lane. I got stuck behind a tanker truck in Smithfield and just stayed back 3 bike lengths knowing perfectly well I was getting a draft. I was in the back of the pack so a penalty wouldn't have made any difference.

I do mostly small races and I'm certain they wouldn't penalize you for losing a race numner and stuffing it in a bento box. They'd probably be thrilled you didn't leave it on the course.

I agree, the swim is OLY distance!!!  Terrific job on the bike and run and the PR is icing on the cake.  Your age group must have been super competitive because you threw down a very solid bike and run!!  Nice job!!!!
