Subject: IT Band issues

I've seen two physio guys about my IT band issues and haven't had much success. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a doc that's worked for them? I'm willing to travel but currently live downtown Toronto. Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers.

Personally for me it was massage that fixed my ITB issues (although I've recently re-injured it after months pain free).  A lot of other people swear by ART treatments, although those did me no good.  I use the masseuse out of the Running Free store in Milton.

So the masseuse just rubs the IT band area? I've tried all kinds of treatments but haven't had any luck. How did you reinjure your IT band?

Rubbing isn't really the term I would use....they breakdown the scar tissue that has built up around the ITB, and it can be pretty painful, same with ART.  They'll also stretch out the muscles, etc., and release other tightness that they find in the quads, hamstrings, glutes, etc.

Thanks Neil, just made an appointment with a doc that's certified in ART and Graston. I'll let you know how it goes.

One other thing to keep in mind - this will come back if you don't work on the root cause.  Hopefully the doc can identify that for you.  In my case it's likely weaker hip muscles that I need to build strength in.

Good luck.

I'll quick chime in with my IT maintenance plan... getting it under control was with stretching, massage and acupunture. Keeping it under control is DILIGENT hip strengthening (glutes, abductors and more glutes), stretching and The Stick.  Oh gawd, how I hate The Stick, but it really does help.  Key for me... diligent.  As soon as i slack on maintenance, it's back in no time.  good luck!!!!

Agree with everything Neil posted. I went to a PT who was also an RMT - she spent a lot of time opening my back and hips with massage techniques but would send me away with exercises and stretches for my hips.  Many of the exercises I had I found were in yoga and pilates so at the time it was easy to add that into my routine.

For me, i let my IT band get out of hand - and it took a long time to really get over it and for a good number of months after I was running again was about keeping the pain away.  If i over did it i paid for it.  It was nearly a year before it was completely gone.  That meant no interval running, taking it easy on the pace pretty well all the time.

Best of luck

When I had IT band issues last winter the key was finding the underlying problem that caused the issues. for me that was weak glutes and every time my foot would strike the ground my knee would collapse in a very slight amount.

I spent about 2 weeks with no running. Just cycling, swimming, and doing some strength exercises and stretches. Then I started with three and ones then fours, fives, eights, tens and once I could run 10 minutes straight we jumped to 20 then 30.

I suffered a brief IT band issue earlier this summer.

Although I did some stretching and used the foam roller, I think the miracle cure for me was the IT Band wrap.

Absolutely no pain while I wore the wrap.

In doing my research, some people say it didn't help them at all but for others its a wonder cure.

Running room sells the Pro-Tec version:
