Master 2264 Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Subject: Time for the 2nd Annual Doughboy 5168 If that title makes no sense to you, never mind. A few folks may remember some threads I started last fall about the cancellation of the Clearwater 5150 race. What was more fun was what came out of it, a homebrew project for me to cap off my season in the cold northeast with an Olympic. I said at the time that I would make it an annual event. I decided to run the course as a training day with B2B coming soon. Monday is a holiday that my wife has off, and the kids are out of school. So, looks like Columbus Day will be the 2nd annual Doughboy 5168. Why 5168? Because 5150 makes the man nervous. What man? Oh you know the man I'm talking about. I'm talking about the man that calls 700-800 registered athletes "low registration." I'm talking about the man that prices a race at $1200 then shuts it down when it doesn't instantly sell out. I'm talking about the same man..... Sorry, got possessed by Nat X for a minute there. Anyway, I had intended to start a site for homebrew triathlons, after that experience, but I haven't gotten that going yet. For now, I'm entering my "fake race" in my BT stats for 2012. Maybe some of you iron distance folks in the NE would want to do the same, say, August 2013 around the NJ/NY area? I'll provide a water stop and have my kids make foil medals. |

Master 2264 Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Time for the 2nd Annual Doughboy 5168 Well, the fee is the same, but there is a prize this year. The winner has a brand new washing machine delivered from Lowe's later that afternoon. The projected winner's last one just died and flooded his basement last week. Nice Kip Litton reference. You know I'm obsessed fan #1. |

Seriously, good luck and hope you have a great race. Self run tris are the best, we have a group down here that gets together a couple times a year with a transition rack, water stop, and food tent. We need to add medals though. |

Master 2264 Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Time for the 2nd Annual Doughboy 5168 I should have known better than to plan this thing with less than 48 hours. The Doughhoy 5168 is postponed. This day is going to be spent with plumbing issues., Turns out our new washer is not the solution to our laundry room problem. There is a major blockage somewhere that kicked all the water back and flooded us. It needs professional intervention. So, I'm not going to be at the gym at noon to swim, while my wife is here dealing with the mess, and the plumber, and whatever else ends up happening. It's crazytown in this basement right now. No big deal. Life happens. She has a co-worker who had a fire last night. They're safe and sound, as are their dogs. We can handle some soapy water. The inaugural race got postponed due to mechanical problems, and ended up on a great substitute day, so we'll see where this ends up. |

Obvious solution: let the water back up and swim in the basement before the plumber gets there... Mark |

But with that warm soapy water, it's unlikely to be wetsuit legal. Edited by colinphillips 2012-10-08 10:31 AM |

Actually I think WTO cancelled one of the 5150 races due to backed up plumbing. |

Well you certainly got scammed, since the host resort is the couch in my basement, and the room now smells like 50 year old wet industrial carpeting. Yeah, if I want to be a serious RD some day, best to learn from the best, and I'm definitely on track for the same smooth sailing as the 5150 series that inspired the whole thing. |

Extreme Veteran 612 England | Subject: RE: Time for the 2nd Annual Doughboy 5168 Theres only one logical answer - SABOTAGE! The WTC got wind of your successful competing event and, rather than buying you out, broke your boiler to force a cancellation and PR nightmare. Sounds like an inside job to me, Id check the wife & kids' bank statements for payments from WTC. |

Master 2264 Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Time for the 2nd Annual Doughboy 5168 Well, if WTC really wanted to sabotage me, they got something to crawl through our laundry drain and die. Can they get that co-ordinated? Want to hear irony? All this anti-5150 sentiment I love to bring up with it's subsequent mockery of WTC as the owner, I registered for Eagleman the minute it opened this morning. And, in a couple years, I plan to enter the Kona lottery as well. I'm a sucker, what can I say? But I compartmentalize rather well, I think. Looks like I may be able to reschedule for Friday. 8 days out from B2B. Perfect. Tapering is for people who run hard. I'm just chugging along steadily. |

Master 2264 Sunbury, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Time for the 2nd Annual Doughboy 5168 This is getting ridiculous. The saboteurs from WTF, clearly out to destroy my independent series, have now gone byeond messing with my house plumbing. They have attacked a school. My kids' elementary school has a water main break. I get an unexpected day with the kids , which is nice, but no DB 5168 today. The pool I swim in is closed all weekend for fall break. By the time it reopens, I'm on the road for B2B. I could just HTFU and go swim in the river tomorrow, but I am not that guy yet. It's a bit chilly here for that.Good luck with your homebrew oly tomorrow Brett. Cap it off with some live Kona watching. |
