Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My Cadence has been stolen and I'm so very angry! Cadence was my beloved 19 years old Giant Cadex CFM-3 carbon-fibre mountain bike, and she was stolen from outside the ASU swimming pool at lunchtime today. I came out from a great swim, wonderfully relaxed and my arm muscles burning nicely, and proceeded to walk up and down the bike rack outside the pool that was packed with bikes as usual. I was really confused as couldn't see her distinctive skull and crossbones reflective sticker on the rear mud flap. Instead I eventually found a cut and mangled bike lock, that I've been using for the last 2 years. I reported the theft to the ASU police. When I told the uninterested officer that I paid $1,000 back in 1993 when I bought her, he just said "oh that'll be worth about $300 now", which made me really angry, and I just ground my teeth in frustration. How could I tell him that I had just shelled out $150 to get her upgraded and cleaned, and how much care and attention I'd lavished over her in her 19 years, as she is my only means of transportation as I have a medical condition that stops me from driving. Yes, I'd had the 2 largest crashes of my life on Cadence, but she's given me some of the most joyous rides and fun times too, first as a daredevil mountain bike, but nowadays as a hybridized commuter bike that still had a lease of life in her when we had a tailwind and could crank out 20+ mph and get some air over speedbumps. Lots of slow hideous bus trips to/from work on the horizon, plus no gym workouts for me until I work out how much I can afford to pay for a replacement bike, what type of bike to buy, and then shell out the money. I'm sure I've got quite a few phone calls to my renters insurance company to find out if she's part way covered too! Horrible day and a really big loss (Cadence2.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Cadence2.jpg (71KB - 9 downloads) |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You need to form a posse or lynch mob. Thieves need to be dealt with correctly. Sorry for your loss. That realy sucks. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm sorry, but how on earth does a college campus with thousands of people NOT have cameras operating? (especially with all the hotties on that campus! I visited ASU for a week almost 20 years ago...the women were unbelievable...I swear they hire hotties to tool around campus in red convertibles!) Seriously, no cameras? That's insane. Keep checking the local craigslist ads, e-bay, etc. for your bike. You may spot it being re-sold. Good luck! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Cadex? Probably worth more now! I remember when Giant first introduced "value priced" carbon fiber. I'm sorry for your loss and I know how it feels. I had a bike stolen at a charity ride. The police gave me the same shoulder shrug you got. My bike was covered by my home owner's insurance less the $1,000 deductable. They went with replacement value. The bike shop where I got it worked up a receipt for me to turn in. A carbon fiber mtb would be worth a couple grand now. At least the difference would get you another decent bike.

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks everyone, and thank you so so much for the email with an offer of a mountain bike, which I certainly wasn't expecting. I honestly think that you BT'ers are the most friendly and generous people in the entire world! Yesterday was a nightmare, especially at the end of the day with a 1 hour 30 minutes commute home at 6.30 pm (should have taken 45 minutes but 2 buses were full and just passed us by). However, my local buddies came to my rescue early this morning, dropping off a fairly decent clunker bike (now called Reggie The Rescue Raleigh) as a loaner, that I spent an hour working on, pumping air, adding lights, and making lots of adjustments. Initial calls with my renters insurance company look promising, so fingers crossed. However, I'm starting to think that Cadence may have left me instead of being stolen!!! While looking for her bike frame number last night, I also found the original invoice for her (on sale at $800, reduced from $1000) back on 11th October 1992. Oh hell, I missed our 20th anniversary, so I think she just walked off with someone else? I was sure that I'd bought her in 1993, and had plans to do more upgrades on her next year to celebrate our 20th, but I was wrong!!!! Please Cadence, come back to me, I really do love and miss you......I'll even convert you back to your mountain biking glory and you can throw me over the handlebars and crack my helmet, just like old times!!!! |

![]() | ![]() I doubt that she ran off. After all, you just had her serviced. When I was 11, my red giant was stolen when a friend was shoved off of it and the perp took off. I ran down the road after him as far as I could until I fell on the ground in tears. When my dad caught up with me and got me in the car, he says I was saying "if I ever catch that guy I'll kill him, I'll kill him." Years later, as a high school wrestler with a 0-13 record, my dad said "just remember back to when that guy took your bike and how much you wanted to kill him. Now take it out on the next opponent." I won the next 2 matches. I hope for the perps sake you don't catch him...I hope he's stupid and makes a mistake...and you're there when he does... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That sucks. You HAVE to invest in a better lock for your next bike. It sucks because they are heavy and expensive, but I can see at a glance why this happened to you. Protect your investment. |

It sucks because they are heavy and expensive, but I can see at a glance why this happened to you. Protect your investment. Yup, I know! Sadly enough, I had already bought a Kryponite lock to use because bike theft at ASU has become chronic in the last 2 years. However, the damn thing was sticking really badly. I have spent the last two nights opening/closing it to help wear it in, and I'm now using it with my friends loaner bike. I mostly keep my bike in my office/home, only chaining it up outside my gym, pool, run routes, and local restaurants, never for more than 1-2 hours, and always in open, well viewed areas. It was stolen at lunchtime, on a very busy bike rack, in full sunlight. Everyone at the pool (mostly the women's ASU swim team who were in the foyer) were amazed that it had been stolen in this way, as lunchtime is always extremely busy at the pool. We checked all their bikes too (when they weren't giving me hugs), but mine was the only one stolen. |
