Subject: Bibs vs. tri shorts

Could someone explain to me why someone would choose to wear bibs vs. shorts? What's the purpose of the bibs? Do women wear the bibs? Wouldn't that just provide two irritating more places to chafe (shoulders, chest area)?

I've only worn tri shorts and have no idea how/why people wear bibs. Is it a cyclist thing or do triathletes use them?

I see a few people suggested them on the beginner triathlete shopping thread and I'm curious. Thanks!

Bib shorts don't have the elastic waist band that tri or regular shorts have.  They tend to be way more comfortable especially for longer rides.  Think about the comfort of a tri suit, pretty similar to that and you don't get as much chaffing as you would think.

I was reluctant to try bibs as well, for the same reasons you gave.  Last year I gave in and wore a bib for one of my 60 mile rides, and I haven't worn bike shorts since on the road since.  Try em, you'll like em.

Since I began wearing bibs last year I haven't been able to wear regular shorts.  The bibs are just way too comfortable, although next year at IMAZ I will probably go with shorts just for convenience.

Bib shorts are awesome for a workout that you're Cycling ONLY.  They are not for a triathlon, or for in-season if you ask me.

But for the winter/off-season, Bibs are the cats meow.

Why?
- They are more snug and keep everything in their place.  Downside is that it's a bear to go to the bathroom in them.

I actually have convinced my female athletes to wear bibs as well.  They love it.

Nothing is more comfortable than bibs for cycling. The longer the ride, the more you'll appreciate them. Last year I splurged and bought some LG bibs that I could wear all day, they are that comfortable.

I don't find them difficult for going to the bathroom, just pull down the front. Unless it's #2, then you have to take your jersey off - but you do that before you leave house, right?

You don't notice the straps, and it chafes less than having the waist dig into you with shorts. Another advantage is not getting that sunburn line on your back between the shorts and the top. I also like tri suits for the same reason.

The OP is female. They will have to come down for any bathroom related matter.

I guess everyone has their own opinions on this, but I REALLY like bibs for everything.  Like TZcoaching says, they don't have the drawstring/elastic and are just way more comfortable.  Things stay in place better with the shoulder straps, especially if your a guy.  But, even if you're not things don't shift around as much in them, you get less chaffing, and they help keep in the gut fat to a certain extent.  Not only does that help your ego! , but it keeps things high and tight when in aero position and helps with a free pedal stroke in lower positions.  I wear DeSoto 400 mile bibs for HIM's and just Love them.  Super comfortable for the bike and the run!

Once you wear bibs you will never go back.  I can't stand shorts of any type because of have been so spoiled by the bibs (not even on short rides).  The trisuit offers the same comfort.  Proper fitting bibs and/or trisuits will not chafe you on the shoulders.  My wife made fun of the look but once I bought her a pair her expense cycling shorts are never used.

This is true for the vast majority of bibs, but fyi, there are some bibs meant for tri use. DeSoto has some as one example. The 400-mile shorts are cycling shorts, but others of theirs are tri-bibs. So you can easily swim & run in them.

Must research!  Thanks for the heads up.

I almost always wear bibs. They are more comfortable to me. Also, even though I am short, it's mostly from my legs. My torso isn't that short and I like that the bibs cover my back even if my jersey rides up a bit. I don't race tris though, so bibs might not be ideal for that.

I have lots of options for women's bibs which is great because as I mentioned, I have short legs and the men's bibs tend to have longer legs. I try to avoid bad tan lines.
