Taking my mom on a 7-day cruise in January.  In an effort to not want to throw her overboard (kidding of course ), I need some good, light reading.

I generally like murder mysteries (Alex Cross etc.).  I also enjoy some good non-fiction and would be interested in some running/biking (but no Lance stuff).  Last cruise I read all 3 Hunger Games books and loved them.

What's been on your must read list?

Read "The Passage" it's awesome. I just started the follow-up, called " The Twelve", in what will eventually be a trilogy. I also just finished Stephen King's new book called 11/22/63. It's not horror at all--it's about time travel and the Kennedy assassination. A great thriller with some interesting historical fiction as well. The Art of Fielding is probably the best book I've read in the last year, but it doesn't fit into any of genres you mentioned.
I hear good things about Chrissie Wellington's book. I read Chris McCormack's book and didn't like it, though many people do.

Oh, and anything by Richard Price (Lush Life, Clockers), or Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island, Mustic River,Gone Baby Gone)

the first 2 books of the song of ice and fire are good. The rest bite.

Hell by Jeffrey Archer is a good non fiction one about prison.

Also The Commitment by Dan Savage is an awesome book if you dont mind the subject of gay marriage, too funny for word.

But, the best book I have read all year and it would be great for a cruise, is Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. It is a beautiful book.

At one point this summer, John Heald counted like seventeen people reading Fifty Shades of Grey on one of his cruises, so that might be a suggestion.

Always looking for reading suggestions myself, so I'll be watching this thread.

Lately i've read the Game of Thrones series, which might be a little dark for a cruise. Currently reading John Sanford's Prey series, which might fit the mystery/detective bill. That was another BT recommendation.

That's a definite. Also, Tuck Everlasting, Hunger Games, A Long Way Gone, Parallel Journeys, My Side of the Mountain, and Fifty Shades of Grey.

If you want light, there's not much fluffier (or funnier or embarrassingly addictive) than Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series.  Ignore the movie, the books are great fun!  I'm embarrassed to admit how many I've read.

If you want something a little heftier than New Jersey bounty hunters, John le Carre is brilliant.  Ok, he's also a LOT heftier than Janet Evanovich.

Nonfiction:  Anything by Malcolm Gladwell will tweak your worldview in a really cool way--nothing is what it is for the reasons you think...  Or you could go classic adventure with Tania Aebi's Maiden Voyage or Robin Graham's Dove. Or if you're feeling brave and curious, Peter Sagal's Book of Vice is, um, eye-opening!

If you liked the Hunger Games, you could try James Dashner's Maze Runner.  Tamora Pierce has some brilliant series, but my favorite is just a duo:  Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen.

I always enjoyed the Grisham series of books.  Kind of that murder/mystery type with lawyers involved of course.

Tana French has a good series of detective novels that are a bit more literary than typical...In the Woods, The Likeness, Faithful Place and Broken Harbor.

Also Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is a really twisted murder mystery.

Agreed.  I've read all of Tana French's mysteries (liked 'In the Woods' best).  Currently reading Gone Girl and am enjoying it.

Someone mentioned Malcolm Gladwell - 'Blink' was one of my favorite books ever.

Personally, I hated 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.  Still haven't finished it due to really poor writing and boring rehashed scenes.  Sort of like Twilight for adults  Can't imagine reading all three.

Because nobody has recommended them:
-Born to Run
-Iron War
-Ender's Game
-The Hobbitt

For the English major types: Anything by Shakespeare. I re read Henry V and Hamlet a few months ago. It's good when you're not forced to read it.

If you liked the Hunger Games trilogy, and you like murder mystery stuff, I think you'd really like the Millennium trilogy by Stieg Larsson:

- Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

- Girl who played with Fire

- Girl who kicked the Hornet's Nest

Taking my mom on a 7-day cruise in January.  In an effort to not want to throw her overboard (kidding of course ), I need some good, light reading.

I generally like murder mysteries (Alex Cross etc.).  I also enjoy some good non-fiction and would be interested in some running/biking (but no Lance stuff).  Last cruise I read all 3 Hunger Games books and loved them.

What's been on your must read list?

. Bathroom stalls??

All fiction:

Good Omens, Terry Pratchet and Neil Giaman.

American Gods, Neil Giaman

Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates - Tom Robbins

All are laugh-out-Loud funny. Fierce Invalids is a quite irreverent, so if you are looking for something prim and proper, skip this one. However, if you want something that doesn't have a lot of conventional boundaries, this is one of the best books you'll ever read.

Loved it Probably one of his best. Right up there with Salems Lot. But you are correct not not scarey at all.

Just got of a 7 day cruise.  I read "Total Recall", very good book.  I like biographies or autobiographies.  I try to learn a little more from each one.  Kind of like their secrets to success.

x3 or whatever for Gone Girl. The ending was a let down since the rest of the book was intriguing & twisted, but, you might be humored by the 'psycho-ness' of it like I was

I'm first in line at the library for this one, I'm excited to read it:

Anything by Christopher Moore. My favorites are probably A Dirty Job, The Stupidest Angel, and Lamb.

Snow Crash counts as a murder mystery.

Ready Player One. If you lived in the '80s, you'll enjoy the nostalgia.

Great taste! I loved all of these.

Also agree strongly with the recommendation of 11/22/63. Fabulous book.

Well, now I have to read "Iron War" because I've read the other 3!!   I always recommend Ender's Game to people.  In fact,  I just gave it to my college lit professor, who had given me "Absalom!  Absalom!" to read a few months before.   (holy crap, stay away from Faulkner.)
