Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Does anyone have one yet? I've been photographing the bejeezus out of them all week for work. They look pretty cool.. I do not have any of the pads yet, so was thinking about the Mini. (I still wish they would change the name of these things)... |

For all of the creative credit that Apple gets, I feel like I can just point to his and say, sorry no. |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() I guess I don't see the point... But I also said that about the Ipad itself, and now I love it. I'm guessing they want to fill niche of something that's a pad, but still small enough to put in a purse. As a guy, I would either deal with the size of the tablet, or use my phone which I can put in my pocket. I don't see the point of something in between. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The point is not to have an iPad and an iPad mini, but the have the option of either a bigger screen and a more powerful iPad, or a smaller mini version that is cheaper, smaller and lighter for someone who doesn't need power, bigger screen or the bigger price tag. I don't get why so many see it as nothing. And Josh, no it is not the most inovative thing ever, but it filled a good gap in a product line. It's like being upset that Dell comes out with a 13" laptop instead of just stocking a 17" laptop. Different strokes for different folks. I have yet to handle one in person. I do want to see one. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't speak for the iPad Mini, but I will say that I think the 7" form factor has much more utility than the 10" (10.1" for purists). I run my wife's Nook Tablet from a Cyanogenmod 7 SD card and it is great--the size isn't too big for typing with thumbs and it's not too small like a cell phone that you can't get a decent amount of content on the screen. Whenever I try and mess around on my FIL's iPad 3 I just can't get over how enormous it seems. I'll take a 7-incher any day (is what she said). |

(I still wish they would change the name of these things)... Unless you poop dollar bills, consider one of the less expensive 7" tablets out there. I've had my Kindle Fire for a year now, and use the heck out of it as an e-reader, movie viewer, web surfer and game. Most (maybe all) of the functionality of the mini-pad (**snerk**) at 60% of the price for the Fire HD, less than half for the Fire.. I think the 7" format is perfect for my needs and would hate to 1) tote around something bigger like an iPad, or 2) try to read and watch movies on my iPhone. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think the difference between the getting the 7 inch screen and the 10 inch is going to be based on how you expect to use the tablet. For reading e-books, the smaller one is better - big enough to read, small enough to be held easily in one hand and kept in a pocket. For watching movies, a bigger screen is better (true at home and in the theater as well - that's why I am considering upgrading my TV from a 60 inch to an 80 and why I see most theater movies only on IMAX). I have a 10 inch droid tablet that I use mostly for movies on the dreadmill and for web surfing when I watch TV the way I used to use my laptop. I do read some Kindle books on it, but I am seriously considering a smaller tablet for travelling and reading. n+1 applies to more than just bikes, especially if you are gearboy.... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm really down on apple and not sure I will ever buy another one of their products. My daughters ipad quit working called customer service and they charge me $20 to talk with someone and they didn't even get it running! Before I upgraded this year to a 910xt I was still using my old 205 forerunner. I called Garmin earlier this year when the 205 was acting up they spent an hour on the phone with me got the 205 running again and didn't charge me a cent. That's how you keep customers in my opinion. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's the iPad 2 shrunk down. Same speed resolution and everything else basically. The camera isn't as good, I don't think. But all expectations are that they are going to release a retina display model in the spring or fall of next year so it may be worth holding off. You can get a full size (I think it's 2, could be 3 before retina display) for $50 more ($379) if you can catch it on the refurbished store. I saw the deal when we bought the mini and considered that one instead. I haven't seen it on there in a while, but if you keep a look out, you might find one.
Another consideration..... kind of depends on the size of your hands. some websites, games, apps, etc. the buttons get too small for your hands. you have to zoom to get to the button instead of just pressing it as with the 10 in screen size. They designed the screen to allow developers to be a bit lazy if they choose. exact same dimensions so that they didn't have to change the apps if they chose not to. It "uses" almost the same as the 10 in size, but if the apps etc haven't been optimized for the smaller screen then everything scales down accordingly. So "next" and "submit" buttons are smaller and it can tend to feel like working on a big phone. So if you have big hulking man-hands, it could get annoying, but if you have refined philosopher fingers it could be a non-issue.
If there are considerations toward a nexus 7 or kindle fire or a galaxy note, then you need to look at what ecosystem you are bought into already, IMO. If you already have an iPhone or other apple device, then I'd say any other apple product is worth strong consideration. It doesn't make much sense to have to go cross platform. If you don't have any other "smart" devices then why not go with the less expensive options. Galaxy has the best user interface, IMO, of all non apple products and can be had for less (I think). |

Maybe I'm not smart enough to know what I'm missing, but it seems to me it will depend on what you plan on doing with this. I've had an iPod since 2005 and an IPhone since 2008, and have never considered "cross-platform" issues in any of my purchase decisions. On my Fire I download books from Amazon and my public library. I stream movies from Netflix and Amazon Prime, music from Pandora, radio from a Tune in apps. Every app I have on my IPhone that I've wanted on my Fire has been available for free. What, in my naivete, is this "cross-platform" issue? |

It's not that it can't be done, it's that it's much more convenient if you are on the same platform. I happen to prefer Apple, so all my devices/personal computers are Apple. One of the benefits is that when I download a movie or song it's on every other device instantaneiously. Like I said, I would just think it would garner strong consideration. Not saying it is the only decision to make. As you point out, there are other ways to have your media (and documents) available across both platforms (and I assume Windows 8 also, but haven't tested it out yet). For instance if you like Ultraviolet it will stream movies on any device and the app is free (though you have to watch it through Flixster). I didn't care for UV because it kept buffering, for lack of a better term, but that's just me and the problem could have been singular or specific to me (they have EXCELLENT customer service by the way). I don't seem to have that problem with iTunes though. I'm not saying you can't, but I don't know definitively one way or another whether you can play iTunes media on android devices????? I don't know, maybe you don't even use iTunes for media and it's a non-issue. If you can play iTunes media then that's less of a problem, if you can't I'm sure there is a jailbreak for that, I just don't know what it is. And it depends on the services you use for your media, too, as you pointed out. I like having mine all in one place so that I don't have to try to remember which service I had which movie on or which song was with which player. Yes you can get them all in the same place but it takes a bit more work. There is something to be said about hearing a song while I'm grocery shopping, downloading it from my phone and adding it to my workout playlist, then when I get home plug in my iPod to my computer (that already downloaded the song and moved into the playlist when I did it at the grocery store) and run a 1 minute sync and head out the door for a run. It's pretty convenient. That's all. You can run all the stuff on any device, to the best of my knowledge, it's just more seamless on the same platform IMO. If android was the initial platform of choice, I'd say the same thing about strongly considering staying with Android. They both provide the same advantage to the best of my knowledge. |
