Over 600 participants in yesterday's race.  Only 5 of us were Clyde 225+ 0-39.  Must I carry the torch for all super-clydes still in the closet??  Come out!  You are welcome and safe here amongst friends.  Do not be ashamed of what god has made.  Embrace your girth and revel in your clyde-ness.  Come and be where you belong.  Let go of the shame that has been creating so much pain all these years and accept who you are!  We're clydes and we are strong!

Ay, yer a wee Clyde ya are!  Myself, I'm a strapping 236

Only one local race has a 200 AND a 225 clyde cutoff.  Although there is a half mary, Catalina Buffalo run, they've got Buffaloes and Super Buffaloes

217 and it goes down by 1-2 pounds per week. I hope it stops over 200 so I can race in clydes.

They actually have a Super-Clyde Div. at the Canton, IL Tri.  Placed 3rd last year.  Whoohoo!  Fun race!   6'4" and 240 and holding (unfortunately).

I was actually was followed by a few whaling ships during this swim - is that a good thing?

I have some real issues with being called an Athena if you're over 130 lbs. That means that I will always be an Athena...if I weighed 130, I'd be anorexic.

What races are you doing? All the races I've done have Athenas classified as 150+. One race I did had it at 145.

Ditto, and for phoenixazul, I will also always be a clyde.  I think I would look emaciated at sub 200.  My wife keeps telling me not to lose too much. I tell her "honey, we ain't even close to talking about THAT yet..."

Why is this always an issue with the girls?  Men seem much more accepting of themselves and their weight than women.

I'll probably always be over 150, and I plan on registering Athena forever.

I think it is just because I think of 130 or 150 as being a perfectly normal weight for a girl, and not Athena size" persay, just...well, normal size. That's not saying 150+ isn't athena for some (as I'm taller than most girls), but man, even 150 would be pushing it for me. My ideal is about 165, and for that, I don't think I'll race as an Athena.

Don't leave me out, I'm a Clyde!

6'5"
232 lbs and dropping (slowly)

There were not many clydes at my last tri. But then again, no clyde division either.

It's a lot more fun winning your age group, or even winning, or finishing top three for that matter then winning the Athena division. THAT is why I don't enter the Athena division, and I bet there is a bunch of people out there who feel the same.

I love that you little 230 pounders think you're big.  You are my goal weight.  Started in January at 265 lbs.  Currently at 257.5 lbs.  I don't think I even want to imagine myself at sub-200.  That's just not a mental picture that I would want.

Sure, it'd be more fun to win a whole gender, age group, or race than to win either a clyde or athena division.  It's always fun to win in a bigger group or a bigger race.  That's a given.  I don't see the athena or clyde divisions as diversions from that joy.  Your time is your time regardless of which group you enter!

I always register as Athena when given a choice.  I personally like to see women and men compete based on size as well as age, because at my ht/wt (6'0/165), it's hard to imagine a 5'0 pixie as my 'competitor'.   Just like I can't imagine the wiry guys or clydes as my competitors...I see no shame whatsoever in divisions based on size.

I'm sorry you feel that way.  Just because we are "larger than you average bear" and have our own division, we are supposed to be ashamed of this?  There are a lot of us out here doing this for fun and to us, just finishing is a victory.  If, someday, I can win the Clyde division, I'll be the proudest person this side of the Milky Way.

I'm confused. If I am a competitive age grouper, but well into the Athena realm (6'0 180 lbs), you think I should race Athena? You already agreed with me that winning a more competitive/challenging field is more fun, so why shouldn't I?

I agree as well that there is no shame in competing in Athena/Clyde - my first race ever was in the Athena division which I won (not to mention winning the appropriate age group, which did not count), but with virtually no competition it was kind of boring.

Not to mention USAT does not keep track of the Athena standings, which I think they should.

I guess I am someone who is really fueled by the competitiveness, maybe to a flaw.

After my first race 2 weeks ago I thought that this past Sunday I might have a chance to place in the Under 39 Clydesdale division and was jazzed at the thought. Ended up 6th and am still jazzed.

Well, I've never won my AG, overall, or the clydes division, so.......  I don't know which one is more fun.  But tell you what, when I do win clydes, I will be happy as hell!!

Funny how the Clyde/Athena discussion always goes in this direction.......  Always curious as to why some people (not you shadowfax) get quite emotional over which divisions other people choose to race in

Race in whatever division you like.  That's why they have them

Oh, and out here in Southern Calif., there are some VERY fast clydes, so the competition is definitely not boring!

Oh please, your barking up the wrong tree. January 2005 I was a 250 lb. WOMAN!! Did my first tri July 2005 (Athena) at 204 lbs, presently at 180. I am STILL "larger then the average bear", male or female typically, so don't get froggy with me just because I said that it's more fun for my Fat A$$ and flabby tummy to beat all the skinny buff people out there.

Don't you think it's great that one of us (yes, US) has crossed over and is doing good?

I owe a huge debt to the larger, heavier people out there doing triathlons. THEY were the ones who inspired this former athlete turned fat wallflower to go out there and DO IT regardless of size, AND most importantly feel good about it.
