Subject: Spin class--clips vs. cages?
I like to take spin classes in the winter, but my bike cleats don't work on the spin bikes at the gym. I've just been using the cages, & figure this should be ok. I've thought about getting different cleats to use, but I'm getting a trainer in the next couple of weeks & would either have to change them every time I switch from spin class to the trainer & vise versa, or get new shoes too. I really like the cleats on my bike so I don't want to get a new set up.

So I'm just wondering if there is any harm in just using the cages for an occasional spin class (1 or 2x) per week, for simplicity sake? (Other than looking like less of a bike rider, which I'm OK with)

I'd just use the cages, life is complicated enough...

Use the cages, unless you have an extra pair of shoes around.  I use some 13+ yo shoes that I had lying around.

I will say that I love spinning in cycling shoes, and I do think it makes a difference, but I would hardly call it worth the trouble.  I probably wouldn't bother with spin class if I had to use cages.

i have the same issue, my tri shoes/cleats don't fit the spin bike pedals at my gym... i've been using the cages for quite some time now and have had no issues... i feel it's an easy transition into a quick run on the treadmill after...

I had some old mtb shoes that got replace with some new ones.  Now they are my dedicated spin shoes since they already had the SPD cleats.

I would get an inexpensive pair with cleats that fit the spin bike.  You just can't get that upward pull as well when you're in the cages versus clips.  Over the course of several months, that little bit you're missing can start training your legs to focus too much on the push and not enough on the pull.  I've also seen many students suffer from biomechanical issues (i.e. foot and knee pain) over time from misalignment caused by the fact that that foot is not really connected enough to the pedal.

If you were spinning once a month, I'd say no worries.  But once or twice per week, I'd invest in an additional pair of shoes with the spin cleats.

I got some used shoes from the classifieds here on BT and put in cleats for the spin bikes.

I would grab a cheap pair of shoes to spin with, using the cleats.

This is exactly why I asked the question. You guys are much more knowledgable than I! Thanks for your help!

I use Crank Brothers on my bikes, but of course the spin class bikes are SPD.

I started out in gym shoes with the cages, but hated that.

Then I switched to my bike shoes jammed into the cages. Better with the stiffer soles, but still lousy.

Then I remembered I had a pair of old slightly-too-big bike shoes in the back of my closet. I bought SPD cleats for them. I'm happy with this even though my feet do move around a little inside the shoes.

I'd suggest getting cheap, or used, shoes that fit "okay," and putting SPD cleats on them. They don't have to be as nice as you would buy for regular riding, but I do recommend that you do one better than me and get shoes that fit. :-)

I have always used the cages with the old pedestal type pedals. My YMCA has the combo pedals on most bikes which had SPD clips on top and shimanos on the bottom and the cage clipped into the shimano side. I hate the feel of those pedals since the extra weight feels like it shifts the center of rotation and feels much less stable to me every with the bike shoes due to the weight and bulk of the SPD assembly. So I have adopted the one bike with the old fashion pedals and toes cages for my spin class. However, most people who use the SPD clips don't seem to have the same problem so they are probably designed for the SPDs.

Since I don't need to worry about falling over and not being able to get unclipped, I typically just use the cages, though sometimes the straps are a bit loose....

That being said, my mountain shoes are a touch looser than my road shoes, and while they're PERFECT for mtb, they feel a bit sloppy on the spin bike so i don't bother.

No harm at all in using the cages.

As to the above about focusing too much on the push and not enough on the pull?  That's exactly what you want to do.  Moving a bike forward is all about applying pressure down on the pedals.  Not about actively pulling up on them.  Beyond unweighting the pedal, any active pulling is largely a waste of energy.

I got a pair of barely-used shoes at a garage sale and put SPD cleats on them. I hate the feel of using my gym shoes with the straps, especially when I'm out of the saddle.
