My RoadID never comes off my wrist. I do lots of stuff outside by myself other than S/B/R... snowshoe, hunt, ski, hike.  Makes me feel better and more importantly my wife as well. You never know what could happen and when.

Just to be different.

If you're still carrying your iphone, there are iphone cases that hold a couple of credit cards in the back (or an ID and $20 bill).

Or, take a photo of your licence and keep it on your phone.

Just ideas, neither I do myself so cant comment on their practicality.

I doubt an EMT is going to scroll through the photos on your phone to ID you (never mind if you have it password locked that would be impossible)... I could be wrong though?

Road ID here, I'm on my 4th one

If all you have is your phone and you are injured and not conscious.....we'll get in, quickly, password or not.  Just saying.

Road ID here.

Maybe they'll try in the hospital so they can get organ donor permission, but I never once gave a rats what was in someone's phone in my 6 years in EMS during any sort of emergent situation.   I like that roadID will actually have useful information like allergies, meds, history, etc if the profile is set up right.  Even if we have a name and phone number, we have to hope someone answers, then remembers your list of allergies/meds/history, and doesn't just start panicking while on the phone with us.

In spite of my crack about my Mom's number in my underwear, I use a RoadID on my wrist.  If I had medical conditions or allergies to drugs/bees, etc, that'd also be PRINTED ON the RoadID (in addition to the online profile) or I'd have a separate medical alert bracelet that I always wore while training.  Remember - your mom knowing that you got hit by a gravel hauler can't save you - But emergency personnel having relevant information might.

You probably didn't....but we make notifications...and sometimes the only way we can ID someone is through their cell phone. I agree that EMS personnel don't care about who they are treating, and they do a great job....but we notify relatives.  That is one of the purposes of Road ID, eh?

My point still stands because I see it constantly......if you have a cell phone and are unconscious in a medical emergency....we'll find out who you are and who loves you pretty quick.

I just realized that this forum automatically removes certain colorful words from posts...hmm.

There is value to notification...won't argue there.  It's just way secondary to my mindset of the primary purpose.  There is a saying in aviation about emergency situations: "Aviate, THEN communicate."  Which basically means when things go wrong, we tend to want to get on the radio and ask beg for help...but they can't help - you have to fly the plane.  IF there's time left, then let them know where to send someone to pick you up.

I'm curious how you'll get in if my screen is password protected....Many companies who deal with HIPAA requirements cite the password protection on corporately issued cell phones as the preventative for inadvertent HIPAA breaches...And by that I mean their legal departments cite it...

I'm interested to know how long you'll try cracking the phone before trying other means of identification..

ETA:  I know there is software for cracking passwords, I just don't know how prevalent it's available..

In exigent circumstances, and a medical emergency certainly applies, we will call the phone company, or send a fax, with the SN of your phone.....in a matter of a very few minutes I will have the last 10 numbers you called, or called you, from your phone records.  We call a number, we get your name....simple stuff.  How do we know what phone company you use?  We turn your phone off and watch as it powers up....again, simple stuff.  Look, we're cops....if it was complicated we'd need help. Laughing

On another note.....bad guys having cell phones is the greatest thing ever!  It makes our job so much easier.

RoadID is good, but at $20 or so not what I consider "cheap."  The laminated ID is a decent alternative.

One of the Walmart's had an engraving kiosk that would engrave pet tags for $4-5, so I selected the standard dog-tag style form and engraved my name, address, and ICE contact with phone number.  It hangs around my neck (I've replaced the chain a couple of times) every ride or run and I've worn it camping and hiking as well.

my phone will still call my main ICE even when locked.  It's my wife, she will most likely admit to knowing me in an emergency... Unfortunately like many of the new 'smart' phones, it's too big to carry with me when running/biking.

I wear a road ID, cheap protection.  I don't really think it matters, to be honest.  First responders will do what they do regardless of what info you do or don't have available.  I don't have any particular medial issues, no allergies or anything, so it's basically a means to contact my important people after the fact.  At that point, with or without it, I'm quite sure they will eventually be found.

When I run I wear my race belt with a little slip on pouch thing.  I keep my car key, and $20 in it.  I could easily slip in a laminated piece of paper with my info, but what if the one day I have an emergency is the one day I forget my race belt (it happens)?  My Road ID is on 24/7 so I cannot forget it.

I'm a Road ID wearer as well but if you are looking for something cheaper, you might look at dog collar tags. I have brass tags on all of my dog's collars with my name and all my phone numbers in the event the dog gets lost. Its pretty cheap to get 20 of them stamped out and they have a rivet hole on each end to attach to the collar or put on a chain. I have quite a few extras and have put them in my camelback, gear bags, mountain bike seat pack, etc. Gun Dog Supply has them for $1.25 each and you can have 4 lines for name and numbers.

We also bought Road ID's for our kids.  Camping, big crowds, yada yada.  They are still a bit young to rattle off our contact info, especially if lost and upset, so we consider it money well spent.  And hopefully money totally wasted.

Well, I will say, thanks for this.  I keep putting off getting a Road ID, I guess it's because I'm always paralyzed by a number of equally good choices: the permanent one or the one where people can call a number to get your info?  What color of bracelet?  Was the coupon in my latest swag bag really the best coupon ever or will there be another one?

I have both, on one band.  I have the rubber band (like a livestrong bracelet), and I bought two tags for it.  One has phone numbers and basic info (like no allergies), the other is the interactive tag for the extended info.

It depends.  Some companies we have a code, some want a fax on dept. letterhead, some want to be able to call our central dispatch to verify.  All are different, but it's pretty routine to do what I am talking about. We call, ask what they want, give it to them, and get what we need.  A court can decide later if we were proper in our actions. (more if the phone company was proper in giving us the information than if we were proper in asking)  We do the same thing if we have a suspect who is on a crime spree where people are being hurt and we find out he has a phone that is gps enabled.....he's caught.

You don't have data security on a personal level and you never will......you just think you do.

So outside of law enforcement (and bad guys acting as law enforcement), is the risk very great for software being used to crack a password on mobile devices?  As I mentioned earlier I know it's out there but I don't know how prevalent it is nor how well it keeps up with advances in encryption..

My point was, and still is, if you have a cell phone with you, we will find out who you are if you are injured and unconscious.

So what verification do they do to make sure you're who you say you are and not a bad guy?

Admittedly I'm now fishing on data security here vs. notifying loved ones of an accident....

Well, even if it was easy and widely available....and it really isn't....a bad guy still has to get his hands on your phone.  That's where the real concern should be.  I'm always stunned that people don't lock their cars, or even the doors to their houses, or don't keep guns in a safe, etc.

Now, Law Enforcement?  The search engines available today are incredible.  As a private citizen they worry me.  I've seen alot of innovation and technology available to the govt. and law enforcement eventually make it's way into the hands of bad people....and if they get their hands on these programs.....don't even bother locking your doors. Laughing

ID while doing triathlons in Australia an emergency contact name and number you write on the back of race number. Also number marking now using temporary tattoos here so don't come off in swim. A quick call to the triathlon organisers they got my name emergency contact etc. I carry my phone in a number belt anyway but in case that gets smashed when I hit the floor....
