Age Group Rank = 26/46
Pre-race routine:

Race time was 5PM, so I just tried to keep busy all day. Difficult to prepare for such a late start time! Picked Tom up at 1:30, and we drove the bike course prior to entering the park. Walked some of the run course.

Ate WAY too much in the 5h prior to race- felt lousy throughout the race
Event warmup:

Stretching, ~1km jog. Short swim.
Swim
  • 19m 11s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

Terrible swim- went ~30m off course near the far buoy and had to swim into the waves to recover. This threw me off and I strugggled the rest of the way.
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention to navigation. Need more practice- had a hard time recovering once I was in trouble.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

Slow through transition because I was so flabbergasted after the difficult swim. Overall, OK- no major problems except.......

Chain fell off bike- this could have been off all along as I forgot to check. Only took a few seconds to fix.
What would you do differently?:

I could do this quicker. Set up was good.
Bike
  • 38m 23s

Comments:

My strongest segment. After such a poor swim, I felt like I needed a strong bike and got it. It was a very tough ride with high winds and hills- I worried I was going too hard. Passed a lot of people. I think the speed was pretty good for a MTB and the headwinds: that crappy bike seems to be performing very well for me.
What would you do differently?:

Aero bars would be helpful.

Check the bike better before the race!
Transition 2
  • 00m 34s
Comments:

Had trouble racking again. Must practice this before race.

I decided on the bike that I did not need anything else to drink- but I grabbed the gatorade and drank anyway. Dumb move- I felt it sloshing around the whole run.
What would you do differently?:

Don't drink just because it is there!
Run
  • 24m 3s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 49s  min/km
Comments:

Felt lousy most of the run- ate way too much before the race. Possibly too much Gatorade as well- should have drank more water.
Run itself was decent in spite of this. Struggled for the first 2km (mostly uphill), but kept chugging at a slow pace. Had enough left for a 400m sprint at the end.

What would you do differently?:

Drink less Gatorade, more water or dilute the Gatorade. Had a huge pasta and rice meal 3h before race, plus 2 powerbars- way too much. I thought it would be digested, but it felt like a load of bricks.

Run itself was good- could have sprinted a bit earlier.
Post race
Warm down:

A few stretches, but not much cool down. Wanted to see Lisa and the kids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Did not eat well prior to race. Too much food/sugar in my stomach. Tough to prepare for a 5PM race, but now I know what to expect.

Event comments:

Not enough marshalls- spectators were on the course in many places.
Overall OK- results were available right after the race.

Good work!!!  Too bad about the food and drink issue.  Oh well, live and learn, right?

I am doing the Subaru Peterborough race July 11.  Are you?

Thanks for the encouragement. You hit it right on the head- it was a good race with several lessons learned.

I considered the rest of the Subaru races but decided to race in Parry Sound at the end of August in the Honda triathlon series. We have a cottage in that area and a freind is running the 1/2 IM up there.

What race are you running in Peterborough? Sprint or 1/2 IM?

Cheers, Kevin
