indianhillsted - 2013-05-15 10:59 AM I like how these discussion have more honesty than in the past. Years ago it was always "in case I crash...road rash", "better aerodynamics", "faster in the water", "easier to take off wetsuit", "easier to apply sunscreen" (THAT was always WTF??). Now people just say "because I like it"! It just seems like such a hassle to me.

I do it because I like it. But the wetsuit argument is for reals. It's a nice add-on benefit.

Shaved legs make it easier to do flip turns!

You are a triathlete! Do both!Cool

The "gender box" people in this thread are cracking me up.  Grow a pair.

If you want to shave 'em, shave 'em.  If you don't, don't.  Personally, it's just too much real estate to keep up with, and razor blades are expensive enough.

I haven't, but compared to the rest of my pretty smooth body my legs and armpits look rather wooly mammothesque so I've thought about trying it just to see.

It's something I try every couple of years and it just doesn't work for me.  I get a rash then break out and get about 100 pimple looking things on each leg.  Um, not so good looking...

I tried cold shaving, creams, hot shaving, no creams, shave in bath, shave in shower, nair, exfoliate before, exfoliate after...

ALSO, it's never perfectly smooth.  And after a day?  the wife won't even get close to me since it's prickly.

Have you seen my legs?  I'm 6'7" - it takes an extra 15 minutes of shower time to get them done.  I would like to do it, but the results don't seem to be as nice as everyone describes with "nice smooth legs).  I wonder if there is 1/4" option that cleans it up but doesn't feel spikey.

I looked into waxking.  I may give that a try - but spending 50-100 bucks?   I could spend that on more (or less) important things.

As Drew Cary and others once remarked, if you trim the bushes around the deck, it'll look bigger.

I shave everything from the neck down with a small exception area, which gets trimming.

I like it better this way and I think it looks better this way.

Besides, shaving your b-crack hair avoids klingons that can cost a lot of time during a potty break.

Remember, waist down, not just the legs.

You know how swimmers will shave down before the big meet at the end of the season--cause it makes them "feel" fast?  They "feel" fast because their skin is more sensitive shaved.  More. Sensitive. Shaved. Are you pickin up what I'm layin down?

Oh boy.... another leg shaving thread.

Yes I do.  I like the look and feel.  When my "non" tri buddies give me about it I more or less tell them it's a personal choice.  Feels better in the water, with my wetsuit, on my bike, and when I get ultrasound physical therapy on my leg muscles.

Essentially, I like it and that's my reason.

These threads never get old!!

On top of all the aforementioned reasons, I go offroad running a lot or do a lot of outdoor chores, and where I live it's extremely dusty and dry. This week we've had the most rain we've had all year, like 6 inches. I sweat a lot, and that means I also attract dirt like a magnet to wooly willy. It's a lot easier to clean shaved legs in the shower than hairy ones.

15 minutes? Maybe you go too fast. It takes me like a whole hour if I'm not maintaining!!! or more.......

3)  You shave because after you crash it is a hell of a lot easier to clean the grime and dirt out of yourself when your legs aren't covered in hair.

This. I'd wish my legs had been shaven the last time I crashed. Hair is really annoying. That being said, I've never actually shaven my legs but I do plan on doing it for my 70.3 in June. I've been all-in with everything else so why not the shaving too?

Word of advice, do not do it for the first time the day before your race.  It take a bit of getting used to, especially if you have a decent amount of leg hair.  The first time, your pants will feel weird, the sheets on your bed will keep you awake, etc.  None of these things hurt, but your legs will feel every single thing that you never even noticed before.

Try sugaring instead of waxing.  Much faster, cleaner and less pain.

I break out the trimmers every couple of weeks...

1/8" guard for the arms and legs
3/8" guard for the "forest"

It's easy and quick!

I despise the "man card" crap. It only serves to place others in a box that is defined by generations of generalizations.

Agreed.

I don't shave my legs. Not because I am afraid people will think I am less manly, I am just lazy. I used to do it and it was just too much work.

I do it because I feel cleaner, it looks better, and I feel better about myself after doing it.

Also, Alice In Chains sang "Man In The Box" - great song.

Meh- do it or not, no big deal.

I had a problem with a very itchy rash where the leg gripper of bike/tri shorts would sit. I tried everything, multiple trips to the Dr. and Derma- even took biopsys- it would go away for a few weeks, but always come back.

If I itched anywhere else, it would spread. AAaargh, this went on for almost a year until one of my friends at the LBS told me to try shaving.

Bingo.

Worked fantastic. I don't know why, maybe something with the hair and salt crystals from sweat grinding together, but I am a much happier triathlete now.

1) I've been shaving my legs for about two years now.  Bugs and stuff get stuck in there when I'm riding my bike and then tend to feel nastier after I'm done because I don't always hop in to the shower afterwards.  No hair and my legs feel fresher.

2) I've also noticed that after getting out of the pool, the towel would grab hair and pull it and it hurt.  I was not a fan.

3) Legs feel really nice after you just shave and put jeans on.

4) My girlfriend likes it.

5) I feel like people might take me more serious as a competitor if they see that my legs are shaved.

I have shaved my arm pits for years. I would look like i have buck wheat in a head lock if I didn't. Cut down the pit sweating 10 fold. Can't bring myself to shave my legs though. I just hit them with a trimmer once a week along with my chest and "forest".

I started 2 years ago when I found myself on a group ride and looked around to find I was the only one with hairy legs. So- it was weird at first, but I shaved them.  (in matters of principle stand on your own, in matters of style- go with the flow)

Now- I just don't like being hairy.  will it help me with my next road rash?  maybe, but take my man card.  I like'm smooth.

Best benefit:  Much easier to apply sunscreen.

Biggest negative:  with hair on your legs, you feel the mosquito before it bites you.
